Dear Parishioners of St. John Parish, With Palm Sunday, we enter into the celebration of Holy Week. I encourage you to read this bulletin carefully as it contains many useful details about the upcoming celebrations. At the bottom of this page, you will find the schedule for Holy Week & Triduum. Other pages of this bulletin contain more detailed information on our Lenten Penance Service, Blessing of the Easter Baskets and our Cuban Lenten Project. Note that the collection of the Church banks has been extended through Easter Sunday. On Holy Thursday, we will again visit seven Churches as we have done in the past. The bus will be leaving from St. John s immediately following the celebration of the Last Supper. You may make a donation of $5 to offset the cost of the bus. This Monday during our soup suppers, for those of you who would like to stay, we will have a showing of The Passion of Christ. Parental discretion is advised. Once again you will have an opportunity to donate a spring flower/plant in memory of your loved one. You may drop them at the Parish Office or bring them to the Social Hall before Holy Saturday. Please fill out the provided form to include your name and the name of the person/persons the plant memorializes. The Church will be decorated on Holy Saturday. Please note that your flowers/plants will decorate some part of the Church/Vestibule. Let us continue to keep each other in prayer, Fr. 4 GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE March 25, 2018 Palm Sunday Our humanity bleeds through today's Gospel passages in more ways than one. We see both elation and fall, hope in the midst of the darker sides of our natures. If we allow it, these Gospels hold a mirror to our own fickle hearts. The crowds cry "Hosanna" and the Apostles profess allegiance unto death. In a manner of days -- even hours -- Jesus is betrayed, abandoned, denied, condemned, tortured, and executed. As God, he could have stopped this horrific narrative from unfolding, but he doesn't. He allows free will to play itself out. There are nearly two millennia between this spectacle and us. We can stand safely removed, if we choose. But Lent invites us to return to this story. Lent invites us to find ourselves in the people we encounter there. Are we the repentant woman at Bethany? Are we naysayers of such lavish piety? Have we acted in a way that betrays those we love or denies what we know to be good and true? Have we fallen asleep in our faith? Have we unfairly accused others of a crime or immorality we imagine, though perhaps they didn't commit? Do we help others carry their burdens? Do we stand in solidarity with those who suffer? Do we care for the dying? This week, take up today's Gospel again. Look carefully at the Passion narrative and sit with it in silence. Find yourself in the story and ponder its meaning for your own life. Journey with Jesus to the foot of the Cross so that you too may say, along with the faithful centurion, "truly this man was the Son of God!"

OUR NEW ST. JOHN LOGO We d like to introduce our new St. John Parish logo. The logo was developed by one of our own parishioners, and reviewed/approved by the Parish Council and Fr. Karol We re happy that we have a logo that helps us create an identity of who we are as a parish family. The logo will help us represent our parish in the many evangelization, social and community activities that we participate in. It will also be used by the Parish Office in correspondence. You ll have an opportunity to see how the logo will be used as we begin to release more materials (i.e., t-shirts) in the coming weeks. Stay tuned. So, a little bit about the design of the logo: Our beloved St. John is the patron saint of love, loyalty, friendships and authors. He is often depicted in art as the author of the Gospel with an eagle, symbolizing the height he rose to in his Gospel. In other art forms, he is shown looking up into heaven and dictating his Gospel to his disciples. Although St. John was not martyred, it was not from his enemies lack of trying. He was served poisoned wine but survived because he blessed the wine before putting it to his lips. Another explanation is to be found in the words of Jesus to John and James: My chalice indeed you shall drink (Matthew 20:23). Saint symbolism have been a part of our Christian faith from the very beginning. Each Saint has his/her own story, and symbols have been used to tell these stories throughout the history of the Church. Through art, symbols are used to identify each Saint, so that they would be recognizable to everyone. St. John s symbols are the eagle, chalice and book. Our new logo incorporates each symbol of the beloved disciple, St. John, into a circle symbolizing the love of Jesus for all of us transformed into the Holy Eucharist. The cross is forefront and center reminding us Because by His Holy Cross, He has redeemed the world. We are St. John Catholic Church, a parish of faith, family and love.

Lenten Penance Service There will be Lenten Penance Service this Tuesday, March 27 at 7:00 p.m. in the church. Several priests will be available to hear individual confessions. Below is A Brief Examination of Conscience from USCCB. Come and experience God s Love and Mercy!

Blessing of the Easter Food Baskets Blessing of the Easter Food Baskets will take place on Saturday March 31 at 12:00 p.m. in the church. Here is a short description of this tradition: Swieconka (sh-vee-en-soon-kah) is one of the most enduring and beloved Polish traditions. Baskets containing a sampling of Easter foods are brought to church to be blessed on Holy Saturday. The basket is traditionally lined with a white linen or lace napkin and decorated with sprigs of boxwood (bukszpan), the typical Easter evergreen. Poles take special pride in preparing a decorative and tasteful basket with crisp linens, occasionally embroidered for the occasion, and just enough boxwood and ribbon woven through the handle. Observing the beautiful foods and creations of other parishioners is one of the special joys of the event. A Traditional Polish Swieconka Basket: Basket Contents and Symbolism: Maslo / Butter : This dairy product is often shaped into a lamb (Baranek Wielkanocny), reminding us of the goodness of Christ that we should have toward all things. Chleb / Easter Bread: A round rye loaf topped with a cross, symbolic of Jesus, the Bread of Life. Chrzan /Horseradish : Symbolic of the Passion of Christ still in our minds, but sweetened with some sugar because of the Resurrection. (May be white or pink [w/grated red beets].) Jajka / Eggs and Pisanki: Indicate new life and Christ's Resurrection from the Tomb. Kielbasa / Sausage: A spicy sausage of pork products, indicative of God's favor and generosity. Szynka / Ham: Symbolic of great joy and abundance. (In addition to the large ham cooked for the Easter Meal, often a special small ham, called the Szynka Wielkanocny) is purchased specially for Swieconka basket.) Slonina / Smoked Bacon: A symbol of the over abundance of God's mercy and generosity. Sol / Salt: So necessary an element in our physical life, that Jesus used its symbolism: "You are the salt of the earth." Ser / Cheese: Shaped into a ball, it is the symbol of the moderation Christians should have. Holy Water: Holy water is used to bless the home, animals, fields and used in religious rituals throughout the year. A candle, often marked like the Paschal Candle lit during the Easter Vigil, is inserted into the basket to represent Christ, Light of the World. A colorful ribbon and sometimes sprigs of greenery are attached. The linen cover is drawn over the top and is ready for the trek to the blessing.

Church Banks for Cuba Initiative We have extended the date for collecting the Church banks for this year s Lenten Mission through Easter Sunday. Please continue to collect your loose change, and ask your friends and family to help support our Lenten/Cuba Initiative. As a reminder, the monies we collect will be used to continue to fund The Catholic Extension project requested by a local Cuban parish Our Lady of Pilar. If you haven t done so yet, pick up one (or more) of the Church Banks from the vestibule. Put it where it can be seen at home or work; start a conversation about what you re raising donations for and you re likely to get people to support the Cuba Initiative. Place your filled Church Banks in the Cuba Basket in the vestibule. We will collect the Church banks through Easter Sunday. Thank you as always for your generosity.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION For many centuries, Christian pilgrims have longed to walk in the footsteps of Jesus, and on Passion Sunday the eyes of the world are on the Via Dolorosa, the Road of Sorrows, in Jerusalem. As soon as it became safe for Christians to worship in public in the fourth century, a way was marked out. It was changed a few times over the years, and today s usual route was sketched by the Franciscans six hundred years ago, although Anglicans and Byzantines have their own unique detours. Friday is the most favored day, although it is crowded then. Almost everyone begins at the Lion s Gate in the Muslim Quarter, and ends at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. It s less than a quarter mile, but it threads its way through crowded markets with souvenir shops and fast-food snacks. There are, just as in your parish church, fourteen stations along the way. The exact spots are not known, but what matters is the pilgrim s unique ability to see even an ordinary road in a teeming city as something more than meets the eye. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S.
