With these images distributed in countries around the world, people will receive the same thanks and promises from the original ayate. In addition to the message of love and the power of intercession for his children taking us by the hand to a more intimate relationship with our lord Jesus Christ divine and infinite mercy. Please also bring a wrapped $5.00 gift for the grab bag. We look forward to sharing time together during this Christmas and Advent season. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Blest Art will be visiting your parish on behalf of the Christian families in Bethlehem, Palestine. Our mission is to support those families in the Holy Land. For centuries, the Christians in and around Bethlehem have earned a living by carving religious olive wood art to sell to visiting pilgrims. Fewer pilgrims are journeying to the Holy Land today, making it difficult for those Christians to support their families. As a result, there has been a dramatic rise in Christian emigration from the Holy Land. Now, less than 1% of the population in the Holy Land is Christians. Blest Art Inc helps the struggling Christian families of Bethlehem by marketing their artwork in the United States. Due to this work many Christian families maintain their livelihood and their ancestral homes in the land of our Lord. When Blest Art visits your parish, we will have hand-carved nativity sets, statues, crosses, rosaries, and many other pieces of beautiful olive wood art. We kindly invite you to visit our display and to consider purchasing a piece of art from the Holy Land. In doing so, you will help support the many families who depend on this form or art for their living. Your purchase will make a difference in the lives of many Christian families. We gladly accept cash, checks, and all major credit cards. Please note that we do not ask for, nor do we accept, any donations. Thank you in advance for your purchase when we come to visit. Jeryes Qumseya And the members of Blest Art Inc. Please visit our display At your parish Saturday & Sunday December 1 st and 2 nd, 2018 After each Mass

5 GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE December 02, st Sunday in Advent Tribulation. Wildfires. Tsunamis. Moral corruption. Disease. War. We tend to associate these things with the end times, and perhaps for good reason! In today's Gospel, Jesus says: "People will die of fright in anticipation of what is coming upon the world." Not exactly putting us in the Christmas spirit, is it? During Advent, we anticipate a celebration of Christ's first coming. There is a quiet stillness about our waiting, or at least we try to encourage that in ourselves. Perhaps we have an Advent devotional or we take time to pray together as a family around the Advent wreath. But Jesus did not come only once into history. During Advent, we remember that he will come again. You may remember the rapture craze in the early 2000s, when a series of books and movies envisioned a future where Jesus was coming soon and all the true believers had been whisked away. Everyone else had one more chance to repent before things really went to hell...literally, in this case! But is that what Jesus is talking about here? The truth is, we don't know what Jesus' Second Coming will be like. The actual return of Christ - though sudden and perhaps frightening to some - should not frighten us. Despite all the stories we may have heard about the apocalypse, the advice of Jesus is not to hang our heads or cower in fear. "Stand erect and raise your heads because your redemption is at hand." In a certain sense, we are already living in the end times. We already encounter great tribulation. We all find it easy to get distracted or discouraged in the grind of daily life. Today's Gospel reminds us that vigilance for God's presence is needed now.

8 Riddle: What do a goat and a classroom have in common? Answer: They are both tools to raise a child up and out of poverty. St. John s Outreach Ministry is considering continuing to help Fr. Etienne, Pastor of St. Cecile Parish, two hours north of Port au Prince, Haiti in an area of dirt roads, small huts and beautiful caring people. Families in the parish asked their pastor to begin a school so their children can receive a quality Catholic education. Fr. Etienne has hired a quality teacher, built a temporary classroom and, with St. John s school supplies, has started young first grade boys and girls on to a quality Catholic education. Practical questions arise: How can the poor pay for tuition? How can they build a safe place to function as a school? Answer: A creative plan like the Donate the Goat program. The idea is to free up $10 per month per family to help with tuition by saving money spent on buying milk when you have your own source of milk a goat, and in a year or two, a small herd of goats. Why goats? Goats give quality milk, the females have two kids per year, goats feed themselves and clean up the area in which they live. How can we help? As an individual, family or group, donate $70.00 and Fr. Etienne will buy a quality goat and give it to a family in his parish. The family will agree to give the first female kid to Fr. Etienne who will give it to another family. This will continue to eventually enable each family to have a small goat herd: *a source of sustainable revenue *a source of income *a source of good nutrition *a successful economic program Our Outreach plan is to collect funds and get the funds to Haiti to buy goats. You can put your donation in an envelope and put it in the collection basket at Mass, or give your donation to Fr. Karol or any member of the Outreach Ministry. You will receive a photo of the goat you are providing to a family in Haiti. If you would prefer to support quality education in St. Cecile Parish by assisting the Build a School of Blocks rather than Sticks you can place your donation marked Haiti School in the collection basket. Our goal is to help. Fr. Etienne believes it will cost about $5,000 to build a block classroom; big, strong, with a metal roof. Let s help! Donate what you are moved to give. Tuition: $10.00 a month School Construction: $5000 per classroom 1 Goat: $70.00 Forms are available in the vestibule if you re interested in purchasing a goat. All forms (and any donations) are due by December 25th. Please see a member of the Outreach Ministry if you have any questions.

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP - RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS Waiting is not always so easy. If you lack patience, like me, you probably want whatever is going to happen to just happen already. I remember waiting on the births of my children. There was the time I sat with my dying father in the hospital. One year, we waited to see if our oldest child got into the college of his choice, or any college at all, which was nerve -wracking. So, to make the time pass more easily, and because it is prudent and wise, we make preparations. We put together nurseries, go over last will and testaments, and look through endless college mailings. Then, when the event finally happens or our fate is unveiled, the preparation ends. Either you have prepared well or you didn't. Unlike events in our lives that only happen once, we have been through Advent many times before. Even though this is the case, when Christmas arrives many of us will think we missed it again, and next year will be the year we really get into Advent. Of course, there is no promise of next year. What if you knew this was your last Advent ever? I once read a book about how to live your life as if you only had one year to live. The author said that doing this provides incentive for a real commitment to living life to its fullest. You notice things for the first time. You make plans that you always put off. You tell people what you always wanted to say. I hope all who read this have many wonderful years ahead of them. However, let's approach this Advent like it is our last. I bet Christmas will seem that much sweeter. And who knows, we may find a new and improved way to live all year long. -- Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS
