NAME: ADDRESS: TELEPHONE: ADDRESS TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION This is the year of St. Paul, and so one of the most visited churches of Rome is also one of the most beautiful: the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls. Like so many other churches, it was founded by the master-builder (or inancier) Emperor Constantine about the year 315. Paul was martyred outside the walls of the City of Rome at a place called Tre Fontaine, probably on June 29, in the year 65, perhaps the irst anniversary of St. Peter s cruci ixion. Christians buried him in a quiet place about two miles away, and visited to pray. Constantine was running low on bricks, apparently, because the irst church was tiny. In 386 it was demolished and today s basilica begun. This vast and towering space looks much the same today as it did in the fourth century. The centuries have not been kind to ancient Rome, but until the early 1800s St. Paul Outside the Walls survived beautifully, perhaps because it has been assigned for nearly a thousand years to Benedictine monks. It was therefore a vibrant place of daily prayer even through the centuries when Rome was a poor and nearly abandoned city. In 1823 a great ire resulted from a botched repair job to lead on the roof, and St. Paul s was destroyed. It is said that the whole world contributed to its restoration. Even the Russian czar and the viceroy of Egypt gave alabaster, malachite, and lapis lazuli for the pillars and the tabernacle. Several of the precious mosaics were able to be restored, bringing the ancient basilica back to life. One of the great treasures of the basilica is a set of prison chains, said to have been worn by the Apostle in the last days before his martyrdom. Unlike other Roman churches, St. Paul s stands in a garden-like suburban neighborhood, surrounded by stately palm trees, gardens, and parks. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Gospel Jesus cured many who were sick with various diseases (Mark 1:29-39). TRUE PROPHETS In Deuteronomy today we hear that God s very words will ill the mouth of a true prophet, but a false prophet will, in a manner of speaking, put mere mortal words into God s mouth. In Mark s Gospel, we see Jesus teaching and healing as a true prophet, one illed with the authority of God s own voice. The whole history of our church is illed with both true and false prophets. Some false prophets were extremely popular and quite well-versed in scripture, and even held positions of authority. But in today s Gospel we learn that Jesus fame spread because he taught with authority; he wasn t an authority because he was popular or famous. Elsewhere, we also learn from him, in his desert temptation confrontations with Satan, that anyone can quote scripture, even against God s purposes. Today we hear that his authority was not like that of the scribes, who held the of icial positions of religious authority in his day. Our work is to do our best to discern the true prophets in our midst, and to be true prophets as well. The psalmist tells us how to do this: by not hardening our hearts when God speaks. 5 FAITH FORMATION NEWS Grades 1-5 Important Dates to Remember: January 28: Grade 4 Mass and Family Gathering the children in Grade 4 will be presenting their posters on the Ten Commandments at the 9:00 Family Mass. Following the Mass the students, and at least one parent, will attend Cafe Julia together, and then meet in the Parish Center Hall for a Family Gathering, See more details in the . February 11: Grade 3 Hosts Family Mass and Cafe Julia Did you know...that the synagogue mentioned in today s Gospel, located in the town of Capernaum in Israel, has been discovered? The original synagogue, which Jesus taught and healed in, no longer is standing, although its foundations still exist. Another, larger, synagogue had been built on top of that foundation, and it also has deteriorated. It is a very interesting place to visit, and knowing that as you touch the foundation walls, you can imagine that Jesus himself may have touched that wall, or even leaned against it at some time! Parents be sure that you have put all of your child s grade level events on your 2018 calendar! The children and at least on parent are expected to participate in the Cafe Julia and Family Gathering moments! Children preparing to receive the Sacraments MUST attend the workshops! Groups A & B will both meet on Wednesday, Feb 7 th Feb 11th: Grades 6-8: Meet 10:10 HS Winter Course: Group A meets 3:45, Group B meets 6:30 Every once in a while, a favorite saint s feast day happens to fall on a Sunday which means my favorite saint totally gets outranked and we, rightly, pray the Sunday Mass rather than the Mass for my saint s feast day. Today, January 28 th, is one of those days. If January 28 th were to fall on a weekday, we d be hearing the Mass for the memorial of St. Thomas Aquinas, a Doctor of the Church, and Dominican friar. St. Thomas Aquinas is one of the patrons of students (Catherine of Alexandria is the other). Born around the year 1225, Thomas Aquinas was a heavy-hitting intellectual, leaving us works in philosophy and scholastic theology, as well as some of the most gorgeous poetry and hymnody the Church has known. I leave you with the text of perhaps his most well-known hymn, Pange lingua- the last portion of which is usually sung during Eucharistic Adoration (Tantum ergo). St Thomas Aquinas, pray for us! SING, my tongue, the Savior's glory, of His lesh the mystery sing; of the Blood, all price exceeding, shed by our immortal King, destined, for the world's redemption, from a noble womb to spring. Down in adoration falling, Lo! the sacred Host we hail; Lo! o'er ancient forms departing, newer rites of grace prevail; faith for all defects supplying, where the feeble sense fail.

6 Disciples in Mission Workshop What is it? It is a one-day session that will support all those involved in a Collaborative to develop a common language and skill set for the work of the New Evangelization. We will be gearing our plans and programs toward the mission of New Evangelization. Where is it? The workshop is being offered at t St. Julia Parish Center Hall. It will be held on Saturday, February 10 th, from 9:00 am to 3:45 pm. Breakfast and Lunch are included! Why attend?
