3 Dear Parishioners of St. John, As you gather with your families and friends to celebrate Christmas, may all the blessings of the Christ child be yours. May his Divine Presence enrich your life during this Christmas season and in the New Year to come. I would like to share greetings from my family in Poland: Wesołych Świąt Bożego Narodzenia i Szczęśliwego Nowego Roku! On behave of my staff and myself, I wish you a Merry Christmas. Fr. Karol CAROLING FOR OUR NEIGHBORS Several choir members and parishioners spread some Christmas Spirit with our neighbors at the Glenwood Health Care & Rehab facility. After their Sunday Eucharistic Service, we sang several Christmas carols and passed out small gift bags to the residents. It was great to see the smiles on their faces, especially this time of year. God bless to all our neighbors during this Christmas Season.

4 GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDER- STANDING OF SCRIPTURE December 24, th Sunday of Advent "Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus." Today is the last Sunday of the Advent season, and we hear in the Gospel the anticipation of the feast we will celebrate in just one day. Christmas is coming! Jesus is on his way! We have had weeks to prepare for this momentous occasion, and now we are on the very verge of its arrival. The children in our midst can hardly contain their excitement as they wait to wake up on Christmas morning. The thrill of this coming moment is meant to remind us of the joy and anticipation we should all feel as we await the coming of Christ. Yes, Christmas is a great feast, but there is more here than a remembrance of the past or a fabulous party in the present. There is a looking-ahead as well. We celebrate as we anticipate. Much as Mary must have waited in wonder during the nine months of her pregnancy, we wait in hopeful expectation as Christians looking forward to being reunited with our Savior. Our future is full of hope. The deflating melancholy that afflicts many people after a holiday runs its course need not be the experience of the Christian waiting for Christ. We are always looking forward to something! There is never a moment when we have no cause for joy. Our lives are lived in a kind of unending advent as we stand in watchful waiting. Let us remember this as we enter into our Christmas Eve gatherings and festivities. As we join with family and friends to share in the good things of this life, may we carry with us the joy of knowing that even better things lie in store for us who welcome the infant Jesus into our hearts and homes.

5 GETTING TO KNOW. Karen Leluga Karen and her husband Bob can be seen almost every week ministering as either a Eucharist Minister or Lector at Mass. But did you know that Karen also heads a ministry dedicated to Domestic Violence Awareness? What would you like people to know about this ministry? I would like people to know that there is help and services for anyone in a domestic violence (DV) situation. Everyone deserves a violence free life. Did you know that the Archdiocese of Chicago has helped many Catholic churches in the region form or are forming domestic violence ministries within their churches? The goal of the Archdiocese Domestic Violence Outreach is to establish parish ministries for victims of domestic violence in every geographic area of the Archdiocese. We normally think of women and children as victims of domestic violence, but does it also concern men and the elderly as well? Yes it does. Statistics show that 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men report domestic abuse each year. Also, 1 in 14 elders (people over 65 years of age) report elder domestic abuse each year. Do you think teenagers should be educated regarding the signs of domestic violence? At what age? Yes, it is all about having healthy relationships. It can be taught at any age. Generally, educating teens about the signs of domestic violence could begin when they start high school. What can any of us do to help those in need? Listen and be compassionate to anyone that shares information with you. Sadly, domestic violence is about an abuser s power and control. You may be the only listening ear the DV victim has to speak with. Here are a few free referral numbers that may come in handy: State of Illinois DV Hotline: or TO END DV Crisis Center for South Suburbia: South Suburban Family Shelter: How have parishioners of St. John helped victims of Domestic Violence? I would like to personally thank the parishioners of St. John Church for their outstanding generosity to the Crisis Center for South Suburbia. From the Giving Tree to the Back to School Drive, from coats to socks and shoes, and everything in between, our Parish Family has helped clothe and supply numerous victims with basic necessities for a happy life. For that I am very grateful. You and your husband Bob were on the pilgrimage this past summer to Fatima and Lourdes. What did you and Bob enjoy the most about the trip, and what was your overall take-away from the experience? The whole trip was beautiful and a once in a lifetime experience. It is difficult to choose just one spot because it was all so spiritual and stunning. For me, it was tremendously overwhelming to feel that I was a part of a pilgrimage that millions of other Catholics have gone on eons before me and to be a part of this beautiful world experience. For Bob, the apparitions of Fatima and Lourdes made him feel like he was there in spirit with our blessed Mother, and standing on holy ground was breathtaking. We heard that you had a beautiful grandson born just recently! Tell us a little about your family. Bob and I met when we were in high school. We worked together at Carden s Pharmacy in Glenwood Plaza, and from there the story begins. Bob and I were married at St. John Church in 1978, 39 years ago. We were blessed with 3 children: Keith, Christine and Mark (all married now), and their wonderful spouses Sarah, Steve and Emily. Bob and I have 2 beautiful grandchildren. Our granddaughter, Audrey, is 2-1/2 and loves playdoh. Rowan, our grandson, is 3 months old and is adorable to hold. Bob and I truly love our family and every special moment and blessing that we are given. May every special blessing be yours, Bob s and your whole family always, as the fruit of your strong and sturdy vines grows sweeter with time. Merry Christmas and many thanks for all you do

Hidden in the mystery of the prophecy is the promise of the Savior, the Messiah, Son of God and Son of David. The prophet Nathan, speaking in God s name, poetically turns around David s plan to build a house for God, and announces God s plan to build a house, that is, a dynasty for David. From this house of David will come the Messiah, the Christ, not in kingly splendor as David ruled, but as a humble man, destined to rule forever and over all. When God gives a gift, it s amazing what we are given so different from what we ever could have imagined. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
