3 Dear Parishioners of St John, This weekend, we have a Second Collection for the Natural Disaster Emergency Appeal. So many people continue to recover and rebuild after the recent hurricanes, fires and earthquakes. Please read the letter, from our Cardinal, which can be found in this bulletin regarding the Second Collection. I want to personally thank you for your generosity. In September, we raised close to $3,000 for Harvey Relief. This week, in liturgy, we celebrate All Saints & All Souls. There will be two Masses, 8:00 am and 7:00 pm on both of those days. Please read below about All Souls Memorial Mass that will celebrate the lives of those who have died during the past year. As I mentioned last weekend, on November 12th, I will host Bears, Brats & Beer party at my rectory/garage. Please contact the parish office with your name and the number of guests that will be attending so I can plan accordingly. FYI, it is BYOB. If you care to bring a dish to share, please feel free to do so. I am excited an extra hour of sleep next weekend. Remember that next weekend, Daylight Savings Time ends. Please make sure to push your clocks back one hour. Let us continue to keep each other in prayer. Fr. Karol LIVE THE LITURGY: God insists that we treat each other with fairness and love. No compromise is offered here. The great commandment is specific: love God, neighbor, and self. Who is my neighbor? It is not just the person sitting next to me today or the people who live next door. Our neighbor is everyone, especially those most in need: those alien to you or to our country, those who are poor, alone, or abandoned, and even those who are the greatest of sinners. We really struggle with how to live these words. How do we open ourselves to the stranger, the immigrant, those who harm us, those in need, or those with whom we disagree? Pope Francis gives excellent guidance here. We are challenged to stretch our thinking and become more unconditional with others as God is unconditional with us. On Thursday, November 2nd, the church celebrates the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed. There will be 7:00 p.m. Mass in our church in memory of our faithful departed. The memorial service will take place immediately following the homily of the Mass. At that time, the names of parishioners and those buried from St. John Church since November 1, 2016 will be read. Upon your arrival for Mass on All Souls Day you will receive a candle having the name of your deceased loved one. As the name of your loved one is read during the memorial service, you and your family will bring the candle up to the front to be lit, and placed in front of the Altar, and write the name of your loved one in the special book. Members of A&E will be present to assist with this service. We invite you, your family, and anyone who wishes, to please join us in praying for and remembering our deceased loved ones. While we no longer experience their physical presence with us, our faith tells us we will one day be reunited. Life has changed for them, their earthly journey is completed, and they are at peace. In communion with them, we journey forward in faith. For any questions, clarifications, or concerns, please call Church Office:

4 GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE October 29, th Sunday in Ordinary Time "The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments." Jesus gives us a simple moral principle in today's Gospel. He speaks about two kinds of love: love of God and love of neighbor. He tells us that all the other laws and teachings of our faith fall under these two headings. So if we can master these, we will be in good spiritual shape! First of all, regarding the love of God, Jesus tells us in essence that we must love God completely and entirely, with our whole being--heart, soul, and mind. If we are holding back from a full commitment to God, then we are falling short of this vision. So we would do well to examine ourselves and find those trouble spots where we are hesitant to give God everything. Is there a relationship we hold in our heart that is somehow separating us from God, either by negative association, lingering bitterness, or a kind of idol-worship of the relationship itself? What about our souls? Are we deeply attached to any pastimes, pleasures, or pursuits that cloud our soul from clearly welcoming the presence of God? An examination of our minds is in order as well. How do we direct our thoughts? Do we strive to form our conscience and understanding in the truth, or do we passively allow public opinion or popular consensus to direct our conclusions about the Church, the world, and our own identity? It follows that the closer we come to loving God with our whole being, the better we will be at loving our neighbors. The more we are filled with God's love, the more that love radiates out to those around us, and the less we concern ourselves about what we can get out of the deal. So let us truly love God, and all the rest will follow.

5 GETTING TO KNOW.ANNA DAVIS Although many of us here at St. John Church know Anna as the President of the Women s Club, there is so much more to know about our dedicated, caring friend and fellow parishioner. How Do You Feel That You Have Grown as a Catholic Woman in Today s World? My mother had a saying that I live by: In your darkest time, look for the light; where there is light, there is hope; where there is hope, there is love; and where there is love, there is God. I have always counted on my faith; in essence it has always been here for me. How Long Have You Been a Parishioner at St. John Church? Since 1991, when Tom and I moved to Glenwood from the North side of Chicago. We went to many other churches, but when I walked into the doors of St. John, I knew that I was home, as did Tom. What is your Favorite Song? Thy Will Be Done by Hillary Scott Why Did You Choose to get Involved with the Women s Club? I always did things with them, but then at one of the meetings at the house, Evonne Blakey nominated me in 2013 and I ve stayed with it since. What is One of Your Favorite Moments as President? While working and organizing a rummage sale, seeing Peggy Nessel in a child s high chair! It just went along with the fun and camaraderie we women were sharing while working and getting things done. What Are Some of the Things That You Would Like All Women of the Parish to Know About Being a Member? There is nothing we can t fulfill as members of the women s club! No one is overlooked and everyone is wanted, loved and cherished. We are a supportive group where everyone has a voice and belongs. We feel it is important to touch the lives of others. This is a place to come and have camaraderie and peacefulness with everyone. We as a Parish Family Feel the Loss of Tom, and Yet You Continue to Serve and Help Others; How Are You Doing? I m doing good (tearfully). My church family has helped a lot, and I have never felt alone. Tom felt at peace with his faith and his church friends. Tom will forever be in our hearts and prayers! Anna, you are a beautiful example with your shining smile of how to live our lives richly as faithful, Catholic women of St. John s Church. Thank you for everything you do!

RECYCLE BINS St. John 's is collecting plastic bags for a new bench for the front of the church entry. If you can bring them in, and place your share in the collection boxes which are located in the vestibule and social hall. We will collect them, and once a week we will turn them in.
