3 Dear Parishioners of St John, I hope all of you are able to enjoy these beautiful fall days. I myself have time to enjoy the beautiful colors of our trees as I walk or bike the neighborhood. Once again I would like to thank the Knights of Columbus and the Women s Club for putting together our first Craft Show and bake sale. I hope that the weather will be more cooperative next year. Save the date for Bears, Brats & Beer on Sunday, November 12th at Noon. It is always more fun to watch the game together. I hope you will be able to join me in the fun at my rectory/garage party. BYOB. Next weekend, Trudy & Bill Miller will receive their Christifideles award for their lifetime of dedication to Saint John Parish. Chat - Pray - Give this World Mission Sunday On Wednesday, November 2nd, the church celebrates the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed. There will be 7:00 p.m. Mass in our church in memory of our faithful departed. The memorial service will take place immediately following the homily of the Mass. At that time, the names of parishioners and those buried from St. John Church since November 1, 2016 will be read. Upon your arrival for Mass on All Souls Day you will receive a candle having the name of your deceased loved one. As the name of your loved one is read during the memorial service, you and your family will bring the candle up to the front to be lit, and placed in front of the Altar, and write the name of your loved one in the special book. Members of A&E will be present to assist with this service. We invite you, your family, and anyone who wishes, to please join us in praying for and remembering our deceased loved ones. While we no longer experience their physical presence with us, our faith tells us we will one day be reunited. Life has changed for them, their earthly journey is completed, and they are at peace. 4 GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE October 22, th Sunday in Ordinary Time "Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God." The Pharisees, full of malice, were trying to "entrap Jesus in speech." They concocted a question that flattered him, saying, "You teach the way of God in accordance with the truth," but which also put him in a position to be in big trouble if he challenged the Roman laws. Jesus, of course, escaped the trap with his brilliant reply. We can appreciate the wisdom of his response, but more importantly, we can appreciate what it means for us. To repay to Caesar, in this case, meant to give appropriate allegiance to the secular authorities. We too are under such authority, and although Uncle Sam is different than Caesar in countless ways, the fact remains that as constituents of this country who enjoy its many benefits, we are also called to extend a certain kind of tribute to our government. Taxes, yes, but more than that too. The loyalty and patriotism that offers our gifts in service to the good of our nation is also a tribute we Christians should make in good faith. Only when a law of our land contradicts the moral principles of God do we have to follow our primary allegiance instead, namely, our allegiance to Christ. Unfortunately, in our day we live under certain national laws that do conflict with the truth about human dignity, and thus a tension exists for us. But the course is clear. We must repay "to God what belongs to God" by defending the truth even when it may be unpopular. This kind of courage is what built the Church in those early centuries of persecution when practicing our faith was against the law. Heaven forbid this should ever happen to us. But if it does, we know what must be done. ******************************************************************************** MEDITACIÓN EVANGÉLICO - ALENTAR ENTENDIMIENTO MÁS PROFUNDO DE LA ESCRITURA 22 de Octubre de º Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario Por propia experiencia sabemos que lo que le debemos a Dios con frecuencia nos pone en conflicto con las autoridades civiles, por ejemplo, conciencia de rechazar la guerra, decisiones morales con referencia a la pobreza, inmigración y el medio ambiente. Cuando surgen los conflictos es cuando la decisión moral llega. El César o el Dios al cual servimos? El Evangelio de hoy nos muestra tres imágenes: la cara del César en la moneda romana, en el rostro de Jesús la verdad absoluta y en las caras de los fariseos y los herodianos la imagen de la malicia y la hipocresía. Con bondad y verdad, Jesús muestra a sus oponentes la forma de actuar con integridad tanto para las cosas de la tierra y de las cosas divinas. Qué imagen ven las personas cuando ven mi rostro? Ojalá que no sean caras agrias como dice el Papa Francisco. La seguridad de guiamos por los valores de Jesucristo hace visible las cosas del Reino en la tierra. La bondad, la alegría y el amor es el único impuesto que debemos pagar en la tierra y en el cielo. La liturgia de este domingo invita a reflexionar en el campo de las responsabilidades que todo ciudadano debe cumplir sin olvidar discernir las situaciones morales de cada circunstancia. Jesús reta este dualismo y la respuesta es que cada bautizado lleve la imagen de él en su propio rostro a todo lugar así que estemos atentos siempre a la respuesta de Jesús: Den, pues, al César lo que es del César, y a Dios lo que es de Dios.

5 GETTING TO KNOW RICK MICHALAK Where did you grow up? - Lansing, IL My parents were - Adeline and Leonard Michalak Number of brothers and sisters 1 brother and 1 sister What Parish did you grow up in? St. Anne for 8 years and Thornton Fractional South in Lansing for 4 years. How long have you been a member of St. John Church? - I ve been going to St. John church longer than I ve been a member. I live in Park Forest. I changed from St. Irenaeus, in Park Forest 5 years ago but I ve been around at St. John longer than that. I understand that you were elected as Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus (KofC). Congratulations. When was the election held and how long is the term? The election was held on July 1, Grand Knights hold office for one year. How long have you been a member of the KofC? I have been a member of the KofC for a little over two years. What influenced you to join KofC? My dad was a member of the Lansing KofC. My first job was in the Lansing KofC. I was 14 years old and got paid $1.15 an hour washing dishes. When I got that first check man I was rich. I regret not joining KofC earlier. What is the mission of KofC? The primary mission of the KofC is charity. We give to various charitable organizations during the year. You might think the Knights of Columbus are just pancake breakfasts and picnic beer but our main mission is charity. The KofC will be starting a newsletter column in the bulletin that will list what we do and the monies that we donate to the various charities. Look for a new column called Knightly News coming soon to a bulletin near you. As Grand Knight what is your goal for the KofC this year? The big push I want to make is recruitment. Our active members number around 40. We d like to get more members involved. Being a Knight will not take a lot of your time. What do the Knights do? Knights are involved in various Fundraisers to donate to organizations. One of the big ones we donate to is the New Star organization. New Star helps people with intellectual disabilities. These individuals are capable of living a normal life but need some help. What is best part of being a Knight? The KofC is a very prestigious organization. I am thrilled and honored to be a part of it. How can people join the Knights/find out more information? There are brochures in the back of church titled 24 Hours. People can call me and approach any knight and we will be happy to sit down with them and answer any questions they may have. The thing I want to stress is that being a member of the KofC does not demand a lot of your time. You can give whatever you want to give and we will be glad to have you. What are your hobbies? I have a home away from home which is a lake house in Indiana. I am a huge collector of everything. I am actually an antiques and collections dealer. I like to travel. I have been in all 50 states, have been to the highest point in 35 out of those 50 states and last but not least, I have ridden a bicycle in 45 out of those 50 states. What is the most memorable item that you have found? A tool called an Adz which I found and negotiated for in Spanish in Santiago Spain. What is your favorite food? Mexican food What is your favorite song? I like all music, country, 70s rock and roll. What is your favorite Season? Fall What do you love? I love being part of the community of St John s What are you good at? I hope that I am good at being a Grand Knight. I m new to it but I will try my best. What s one thing you want people to know about you? That they can approach me and contact me and whatever I can do for them I will try to help.

6 Founder- MCA Foundress- SPOF In 1843 French Bishop Charles de Forbin-Janson shared his longtime dream, to help the children of the Catholic missions, with his friend Pauline Jaricot. She had already founded the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, which helped to support the Church s missionary efforts. Bishop Charles was convinced that children rich in faith and love could play their own part in the Church s mission and even stir adults to the same generous missionary spirit. Thus the Missionary Childhood Association (MCA) was born! Originally Bishop Forbin-Janson appealed to the children of France to reach out and help the children of the missions in the North America and China. Back then the United States was mission territory! He asked them to say a Hail Mary every day and give a small coin every month to help feed the children in the missions. The motto was children helping children. The French children took up this great work and from then on the work of missionary kids has spread across the world. Today it is in 140 countries and helps make Jesus known to children all over the world. Look down below for logos and images from MCA in many different countries today. 7 KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS MEMORIAL BRICKS The Knights of Columbus Memorials Bricks have been set. Just as an FYI, there are still 110 empty spaces. If you would like to purchase a brick in honor of your loved ones, the Knights will be doing another selling of the bricks come Spring of The price of purchasing a memorial brick will remain the same at $65.00 per brick. RECYCLE BINS St. John 's is collecting plastic bags for a new bench for the front of the church entry. For the next six months please collect your grocery, cleaner, ice,newspaper, bread, sandwich bags. Please no plastic bottle or caps. If you can bring them in, and place your share in the collection boxes which are located in the vestibule and social hall. We will collect them, and once a week we will turn them in. For every 500 hundred pounds we gather and turn in to jewel grocery store, we will receive a five foot resin bench. We are off to a great start, we have turn in 100 pounds so far, and getting ready to turn in another 100 pounds this week. So lets try to work together and St. John's can receive benches. First, there is the intended assembly, which is described as comprised of mostly children of school age. There are three Eucharistic Prayers for Masses with Children available to us now in the missal. The first one has a very simple form, easily grasped by even a young child. The second has a great deal of participation by the assembly repeated sung acclamations. The third has a number of variations that can be tricky for a priest to handle if he hasn t prepared carefully. All of this work does point to a true treasure of our tradition: children are part of the Sunday assembly, precisely because they are baptized members of Christ s body. By contrast, the churches of the Reformation tend to look upon children as members in training, and see worship as an adult activity. Sunday school happens downstairs while the adults celebrate Holy Communion upstairs. In a phrase, that s not Catholic. Children belong to Christ and to the assembly. So, the desire to care for the children in the assembly, to draw them into the prayer, and to adapt our rituals and texts to their needs is deeply Catholic, a true pastoral effort to help draw everyone into the praise of God. 10 October 17, 2017 St. John 50/50 Raffle Envelope number 323 was drawn for last week s 50/50 raffle drawing. The parishioner assigned that number did not participate in the drawing. Last week s prize of $385 will be added to this week s amount. Enhanced 50/50 Raffle Beginning October 1, 2017 Under the enhanced raffle, the plays and the draws are done weekly. Parishioners put $5 in a 50/50 envelope by each Sunday of the week they wish to play. Once a week, one winning number is pulled from the total number of registered parishioners, after the 8:00 a.m. Mass on Tuesday, with two volunteer witnesses present. In order to win, the winning parishioner must have 1) put $5 in the 50/50 envelope in the collection basket for the week they wish to play, and 2) put in your regular Sunday/Memorial offering. If there is a winner, the amount won is split 50/50 between the one winner and the parish. If there is no winner, the amount collected rolls over and is added to the next weekly draw. 50/50 RULES: All proceeds from the drawing will benefit St. John Church All registered members of St. John Church are eligible for the 50/50 raffle (please call our Parish Office if you would like to register at our Parish) Attend any weekend mass and be sure to drop your weekly envelope and your 50/50 envelope into the collection basket If you are on vacation or away for the weekend you may drop off your 2 envelopes in advance at the parish office To be eligible for the 50/50 raffle a minimum of $5.00 must be included in BOTH the 50/50 envelope AND your Sunday envelope If you are a participant in the Give Central Program, you must give a minimum of $5.00 a week for each Sunday of the month, and you will still need to give a 50/50 envelope with a minimum of $5.00 for each weekly drawing you wish to participate in The winner will be randomly drawn each Tuesday from the registered parishioners database 50/50 envelopes are available at all the entrances of the church
