The speaker for the evening is a representative from Catholic Charities who will enlighten us on the services they offer to the needy. All women of the Parish are invited to join us for the evening. 3 PARISH MISSION NOVEMBER 27, 28 AND 29TH AT 7 PM REV. THOMAS R. McCARTHY, O.S.A. Father Tom McCarthy is an experienced teacher, administrator, retreat director and parish mission preacher. He is a native of the South Side of Chicago. He grew up in St. Adrian Parish in Marquette Park. He received his elementary school education at St. Adrian School and high school education at St. Rita of Cascia High School He graduated from Villanova University with a B.A. in Communication Arts. He also has a Master of Arts in Educational Administration from Lewis University. Fr. Tom entered the Midwest Province of the Augustinian Order in After completing his novitiate he attended Catholic Theological Union in Chicago and graduated with a Masters of Divinity degree. In 1993 he made his solemn vows as an Augustinian Friar and in 1994 he was ordained to the priesthood. He did pastoral internship at St. Clare of Montefalco Parish in Grosse Pointe Park, MI, and also taught theology at Providence Catholic High School in New Lenox. Fr. Tom ministered for 21 years at St. Rita of Cascia High School in Chicago as a teacher, campus minister, Principal, President and Chairman of the Board of Directors. He is currently the Vocation Director for the Our Mother of Good Counsel (Midwest) and St. Thomas of Villanova (Eastern) Provinces and resides at Villanova University. 4 LIFE EVERLASTING The second book of Maccabees tells a powerful story, and a rather gruesome one at that. But central to it, beyond the horrible deaths inflicted upon the brothers and their mother, is their belief in the promise of resurrection and life everlasting in God. Paul asks the Thessalonians to pray for him as he spreads Christ s message of love, so that he might be delivered from other nonbelievers anxious to do him harm. The apostle is confident in such prayer, just as he is confident in the everlasting support of Jesus and God the Father. And there s that everlasting word again. The Sadducees, not buying the idea, ask Jesus an interesting albeit meaningless question about the status of married life at the Resurrection. He tells the non-believers that marriage isn t an issue for the risen children of God. All young people of the parish in high school or age are welcome to Phone attend and bring a friend. Contact the parish office for more information. TURKEY SHOOT Our turkey is very short on feathers. He usually has a total of fourteen by the date of the Turkey Shoot drawing. The weather is getting colder and he needs to be feathered completely by November 13th if he is to survive. Please do whatever you can for our only Parish-wide fundraiser. The drawing will be held in the Social Hall, November 20th after the 10:00 Mass. Refreshments will be served. If you need extra tickets or did not receive yours in the mail, please contact Eileen or Karen, Tuesday through Friday, 9:00 am to 2:30 pm at. This is a good time to get even with friends and family who are consistently approaching you for donations or to purchase items to help their individual charities. This is the only Parish-wide fundraiser we have and our goal is $15, which will give BUBBA his full array of feathers. Please do whatever you can to help dress up this desperate turkey. In Ireland, the so-called penal laws were even harsher than in England, as a minority Parliament tried to force the conversion of the population by denying the majority political and economic power. Beginning in 1691, laws were passed that punished dissenters, principally Catholics, but also causing hardship for Jews, Quakers, and others. There were acts forbidding mixed marriage or sending children beyond the seas for schooling. Catholics were taxed at double the common rate, barred from the legal professions and from university, and not allowed to build churches or own a decent horse. In 1793 the situation began to change, as it became clear that the economic persecution would not drive the majority away from Catholicism. Gradually, laws were repealed until by 1829 freedom was won, although Catholics at university were ineligible for honors, and until the 1920s and the Republic, the Church of Ireland was the state church, funded by the taxes of all citizens.
