This award is bestowed upon individual Catholic who has demonstrated, by participation in parish life, the personal and ministerial renewal called by Papal exhortation, Christifideles Laici, calling the laity to vocation of responsibility for the Church s life springing from the gift and mission of their baptism. Bears, Brats and Beers Party!!! On Sunday, November 12th, Fr. Karol will host a Bears, Brats and Beers party at his rectory/ garage. We ll gather at 11:30, prior to kickoff. Come on out for this NFL football rivalry game between the Chicago Bears and the Green Bay Packers, and wear your Bears (or even your Packers) gear. We might even have flag football on the south lawn of the church. Please call the parish office by Thursday, November 9th with your name and number in your party so we can plan accordingly. FYI - it s BYOB (B for beverage). Bring a dish to share if you d like to do so, and a lawn chair in case we are able to watch the game from outside. Let s go Bears!!!

4 GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE November 5, st Sunday in Ordinary Time "For they preach but they do not practice." The scribes and Pharisees may be the ones Jesus was speaking about in today's Gospel, but we must be careful not to dismiss his words when it comes to our own actions. Jesus offered a difficult challenge to those honorseekers that we must also heed when he said, "The greatest among you must be your servant." This is not the way the world usually works. Generally speaking, the idea of being a servant is considered inferior to being someone who has risen to high levels of leadership or status. But Jesus wants people in positions of authority to selflessly serve those over whom they have influence. And he insists that the leaders who establish laws, rules, and guidelines do not excuse themselves from following their own directives! "Practice what you preach," as the saying goes. Whether or not we have extensive public influence, almost all of us at certain points are in a position to exercise leadership--with our children and families, with classmates, coworkers, neighbors, friends, and sometimes strangers. When these moments arise, we are called to step into this role without being hypocrites. It's important to be sure we don't issue unrealistic demands on others that we ourselves would find it burdensome or even impossible to fulfill. This requires the virtue of humility. Instead of reveling in the authority we may have at any given moment, instead of creating "heavy burdens hard to carry and lay[ing] them on people's shoulders," we need to be ready and willing to walk a mile in their shoes, and lead accordingly. And Jesus tells us clearly that this servant leadership will be rewarded, for "whoever humbles himself will be exalted." ******************************************************************************** MEDITACIÓN EVANGÉLICO - ALENTAR ENTENDIMIENTO MÁS PROFUNDO DE LA ESCRITURA 5 de noviembre de er Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario Muchas veces se ve en los medios de comunicación especialmente la televisión y la radio programas de imitación y algunas personas se dan a la tarea de imitar a artistas famosos. Los imitadores procuran hacer el mejor papel del personaje. Pero hay que notar que se imita lo de fuera, no lo que es su vida o su forma de ser. Hoy en el Evangelio, el Señor Jesús nos da una cátedra de a quien debemos de imitar; fue directo, al grano y habló sin reservas tanto para el pueblo como para sus discípulos y para nosotros en este tiempo. Su palabra debe ser aliento para la sociedad actual que trata de imitar lo que ve y lo que escucha. En la cátedra de Moisés se han sentado los escribas y fariseos. Hagan, pues, todo lo que les digan, pero no imiten sus obras, porque dicen una cosa y hacen otra (Mt 23, 2-3). A quién imitan los niños y jóvenes de hoy? Quiénes son sus guías a seguir? Jesús habla de las cargas pesadas que los maestros de la ley imponían especialmente a los pobres. Si damos carga a los demás, el deber principal es ayudar a llevarla. No se puede dejar toda la responsabilidad de los hijos a la esposa o al esposo. Se trabaja en familia. También las cosas no se hacen para quedar bien o para lucirse. Hay tener cuidado en esto! En su discurso, Jesús recalca que tenemos un solo Padre y un solo guía que es Cristo. Entonces, dice él: Que el mayor de entre ustedes sea su servidor, porque el que se enaltece será humillado y el que se humilla será enaltecido (Mt 23, 11-12).

5 GETTING TO KNOW.FATHER BILL STENZEL Fr. Bill, please tell us more about you! I was born and raised on the South Side of Chicago. South Side Catholics would say, I was baptized at St. Sabina, grew up in St. Leo both near 79th Street. I am an alum of Leo High School 62 and The Illinois Institute of Technology 66. During college I worked at the Lytton Clothing Co., at State and Jackson where I learned the basics of the retail credit business. I remained there for one year after graduating college as the assistant credit manager. In 1967 I joined the General Electric Credit Corp. GECC moved me through the Management Development Program which was a great opportunity. The GE years were a wonderful part of my life. Fr. Bill at St John s rectory while still being administrator of St John s. How long have you been a priest? In September, 1971 I began the experience of preparing for ordained ministry in the Archdiocese of Chicago, an unexpected change of course for me, a surprising one. At Mundelein Seminary a group of men who had been together since their Quigley days welcomed me and John Hoffman-now my closest friend in my class. Three and one half years later we were ordained, the class of For me, the man from Nazareth led me to IIT, to General Electric, to Mundelein, and to every community that has been home for short or long stays during my life. What do you like to read? For fun, I read detective "who done it. I like the Lincoln Rhyme novels by Jeffrey Deaver and the Patterson and Connelly novels. The best book I have read in the last two years is an old book recommended by a young college student when he was still in high school. It s THE MAN NOBODY KNOWS, by Bruce Barton. It is out of print but available on line, on kindle. Everybody who goes to church and everybody who quit going to church should make this a must read. What do you enjoy doing in your free time and what kind of music do you listen to? Free time activities have changed over the years. Since retiring I am trying to see friends more often. I like to entertain at home and also discover new restaurants. I mostly listen to jazz, and I am spending more time at the piano. I have relearned some music from my childhood and adult piano lessons and now play what I want to play, when I want to play. What have been some of your most touching, memorable moments as a priest? I ve been touched deeply each day almost by the gift of the people with whom I ve had the privilege of doing church. Nothing is more sacred to me than the times when I have been trusted by people during fragile, painful, and wounded times in their lives and the times when people taught me lessons that do not happen in classrooms.

6 Who are some of the people that have greatly influenced you? A wonderful scripture teacher, Fr. Dan Harrington, taught us to notice how Jesus always met people where they were. My mentor, Fr. George Kane, taught us that church was the place for us all to be together with the questions, not the place with all the answers. And my first pastor, Fr. Leo Mahon, modeled ministry as following Jesus example. He talked to people for awhile, as Jesus did. Then he d say we ll talk some more next time. Is there any particular passage in the Bible that speaks to you? The scripture passages describing Jesus doing ministry and his words Follow Me means a lot to me. How do you like to pray on a normal day? My prayer routines are adjusting to retirement. For many years a quiet hour before the start of a busy day was necessary. Now a quiet hour may be necessary after a day that has been busier than usual. I now enjoy a deeper awareness of my companion from Nazareth and we take several breaks throughout the day and I leave more space for him to do some talking. Have you ever been on a pilgrimage? I have made two pilgrimages to the Holy Land. The first was in 1978, an unexpected gift from a priest who had a ticket booked and was not able to travel. We left two days after he called me. The second was in I travelled with parishioners from St Francis Xavier on a choir pilgrimage. On the first trip my ideas about Mary, the Mother of Jesus changed radically. I was eating a sandwich on the steps of a corner grocery in Nazareth. I watched women from the neighborhood walking by with their school age children. Back on the bus it hit me that not one of those women looked anything like any statue or painting of the Blessed Mother that I had ever seen. I believe that there are many beautiful statues and paintings created over the centuries. But that day in Nazareth I know what she really looked like! Have you noticed a Francis Effect in people s feelings or viewpoints? Do you think Pope Francis can help us reach more unchurched people? For me the Francis Effect has been an affirmation of the women and men who were a part of my formation to priesthood and ministry. He will sometimes call the church and its people to points of view and ministerial strategies that we heard about and learned way back then. Over the years, some of the most effective ministerial strategies I know of were looked down upon. We were discouraged from doing what we knew to be effective. Those were challenging times for many in the church. Francis has called the church to follow Jesus example. I m good with that. I believe and trust that the church will follow and will discover what it means in our time to do church well. His sense of welcoming everybody and Jesus example of meeting each person where they are at is the best hope and best strategy for keeping church alive and well. Thank you, Fr. 7 Since Vatican 2, several changed have been made in the Eucharistic Liturgy. Most of the changes are aimed at the presiding Priest and the congregation doesn t need to worry about them. However, when we pray the Lord s Prayer (Our Father) AT Mass we no longer end with Amen. ended with an Amen. When we are praying our morning or night prayers, a rosary, or any other prayers, the Lord s Prayer should be The Women s Club will attend the 8:00 Mass on Sunday, November 5th. Please meet in the Social Hall before 7:45 a.m. The meeting will be held on Monday, November 6th at 7:00 p.m. The guest speaker is Dr. Josh Zumstein, Chiropractor practicing in Homewood. Dr. Zumstein has presented at our meeting in the past and his information is extremely helpful. All women of the Parish are invited. Thanks to all who baked or brought items for the Women s Club Sale, we made $842.00!! Youth get involved during mass At the 10:00am mass on Sunday, October 29th, several of our CCD students from the 7th and 8th grade classes took part in the mass. They served as altar servers, lectors, gift bearer and ushers. Fr. Karol invited all the children to join him during his homily as he talked to them about the week s Gospel. What a beautiful site to see all the youth of our parish getting involved. Thank you to Andy Perz and our CCD teachers for getting our students prepared for the mass. They all did a fantastic job. We look forward to having the children serve at masses in the future.

If you said the Vatican, or St. Peter s, you were off by a few miles, since the answer is the Basilica of St. John, the Lateran, the Mother Church of all the churches of the world and the cathedral of the Diocese of Rome. It takes its name from the Lateran family, the Trumps of their day, who somehow ran afoul of the Emperor Nero. He seized all their property, including their vast Roman palace and estate. We don t know how Plautius displeased Nero so badly, but eventually all the Lateran property came to Constantine, the first Christian emperor, through his wife, Fausta. Early in the fourth century, when Christianity was at last legalized, Constantine gave the property to the church. Soon the great meeting halls were expanded and adapted. Over the centuries, the church building has been sacked by armies, ruined by fire, torn down, and rebuilt. The oldest and most unchanged part of the Lateran is a vast, separate baptistery with steps leading down to a huge green basalt pool. Imagine what a triumphal moment the dedication of this public church building was for a community that had worshiped in secret for so long! This Thursday s feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica is really about the tradition of consecrating space for worship, and so by extension, a feast for your parish church building and, given the beautiful second reading, for its baptistery as well. 10 October 24, 2017 St. John 50/50 Raffle Envelope number 326 was drawn for last week s 50/50 raffle drawing. The parishioner assigned that number did not participate in the drawing. Last week s prize of $ will be added to this week s amount. Enhanced 50/50 Raffle Beginning October 1, 2017 Under the enhanced raffle, the plays and the draws are done weekly. Parishioners put $5 in a 50/50 envelope by each Sunday of the week they wish to play. Once a week, one winning number is pulled from the total number of registered parishioners, after the 8:00 a.m. Mass on Tuesday, with two volunteer witnesses present. In order to win, the winning parishioner must have 1) put $5 in the 50/50 envelope in the collection basket for the week they wish to play, and 2) put in your regular Sunday/Memorial offering. If there is a winner, the amount won is split 50/50 between the one winner and the parish. If there is no winner, the amount collected rolls over and is added to the next weekly draw. 50/50 RULES: All proceeds from the drawing will benefit St. John Church All registered members of St. John Church are eligible for the 50/50 raffle (please call our Parish Office if you would like to register at our Parish) Attend any weekend mass and be sure to drop your weekly envelope and your 50/50 envelope into the collection basket If you are on vacation or away for the weekend you may drop off your 2 envelopes in advance at the parish office To be eligible for the 50/50 raffle a minimum of $5.00 must be included in BOTH the 50/50 envelope AND your Sunday envelope If you are a participant in the Give Central Program, you must give a minimum of $5.00 a week for each Sunday of the month, and you will still need to give a 50/50 envelope with a minimum of $5.00 for each weekly drawing you wish to participate in The winner will be randomly drawn each Tuesday from the registered parishioners database 50/50 envelopes are available at all the entrances of the church
