Most of us have more than one job to do, and we never seem to have enough time. We are workers, volunteers, parents, friends, and most of us are more than one thing at a time. But which of these is the work of God? We seldom view our ordinary work as being the work of God. We may think that we have to be ministers or priests, missionaries or charity workers, engaged fulltime in works formally identified as being "God's work." But everything we do with a faithful heart and with love for others is God's work. We each have our own role to fill in the world, and many gifts are necessary. We cannot always see the direct connection of our daily work to the plan of God. But we trust and we believe that God leads us to do what is needed, where it is needed. What is "God's work?" 3 Dear Parishioners of St. John, Next weekend is Mission Appeal Sunday and we will have the Sisters from The Servants of the Lord and the Virgin of Matará visit with us. Please give them a warm St. John s welcome. Below you will find a short introduction and some information about their Institute and mission in Argentina. Let s keep each other in prayer, Fr. Karol ************************ The servants of the Lord and the Virgin of Matará, a missionary Institute of religious sisters, are happy to be given the opportunity to speak at Saint John for the mission appeal on August 11/12. From our beginnings in San Rafael, Argentina in 1988 we have grown to over 1200 sisters missioning in almost 40 different countries throughout the world. We strive to go where the presence of religious sisters is most needed. Although we are an international community, we have been blessed with many vocations from the United States a bit over 100 at present. This appeal allows us to inform the members of your parish about our mission work in Argentina. As you may imagine, our missions in places like Argentina are in great need of support. The sisters work in several schools, providing education for children and teenagers. They also have two homes for persons with special needs. Since most of the school students and residents in the houses of mercy come from poor families, the sisters also take care of the families by giving them some assistance. As you may know, Argentina is not economically stable at present. Thank you, Father Tybor, for giving us this opportunity to speak at Saint John and share with you about our mission in Argentina. As we daily strive to help those in need, we are most grateful to all of you for your prayers, contributions and generosity, truly a grace from God and a consolation for our missionary sisters. 4 GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEP- ER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE August 5, th Sunday in Ordinary Time In an on-demand society, it's not always easy to imagine life with less. The crowds of Jesus' day depended on the weather and successful growing seasons for their livelihood. For many of Jesus' listeners, even "food that perishes" would have been a welcome relief. Jesus acknowledges this but tries to draw them deeper. "You are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the loaves and were filled." For people who have just witnessed a miracle, the response is strangely marked by ingratitude. "What can you do? Our ancestors ate manna in the desert." Jesus fed them for one day, but Moses interceded with God for 40 years of bread. "Jesus," they seem to say, "can't you just give us more?" How often do we behave similarly in the spiritual life? "If I only I had more patience, then I could be kind to her." "I could be welcoming if I was more outgoing, but that's just not me." "I know I'd be a better parent if I just had more time." Like the crowds, we want Jesus to give us more. We always don't want him to completely shift our paradigm. Perhaps it's not "more patience" we need, but a deeper sense of our own imperfections for a greater sense of empathy. Maybe God is inviting you not to entertain an entire group, but to seek out the quiet person on the fringe. And time may limit you from family engagement, but could God be asking you to reorder your priorities entirely? After all, it wasn't more loaves that the people needed. Jesus is "the bread of life," who sustains our most essential needs. This week, are you looking for more or are you looking for God Himself? MEDITACIÓN EVANGÉLICO - ALENTAR EN- TENDIMIENTO MÁS PROFUNDO DE LA ESCRI- TURA (Gospel Meditation) 5 de agosto de º Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario Después, de la multiplicación de los panes, lejos de comprender la maravilla de los milagros, las personas comenzaron a seguir a Jesús, pero lo asediaban con preguntas. Al grado de crear una tensión entre ellos y un mal entendimiento entre lo que la gente buscaba y lo que ofrecía Jesús. Este domingo, cabe la pregunta para reflejar interiormente. Qué estoy buscando? Qué le pregunto a Jesús? Las personas de su tiempo, buscaban señales milagrosas para creer en él. Le cuestionaban su obra. Qué le pregunto yo? Recordemos las palabras de Jesús, su promesa del pan que nunca se acaba. "Yo soy el pan de vida. El que viene a mí nunca tendrá hambre y el que cree en mí nunca tendrá sed". Juan 6:35). El pan, es la base de nuestro alimento en la mesa, casi nunca falta el pan, lo saboreamos. Pero, las lecturas nos dicen que hay un pan diferente: el de la relación íntima con Jesús, el Pan de la Eucaristía, como base de alimento para la jornada. Si decimos que creemos en el Cuerpo y la Sangre del Señor, afirmamos nuestro compromiso como bautizado. Pero, como las personas de este Evangelio, el entendimiento humano no siempre alcanza a comprender este misterio. Hoy, se nos pide humildad para reconocer a Jesús en la Eucaristía, conversión para seguir haciendo el bien y autenticidad para vivir los valores cristianos. Somos buscadores, como la muchedumbre de la multiplicación de los panes, Jesús, es el gran profeta, y van tras él a donde vaya. Qué busco al asistir a misa cada domingo?

5 THE EUCHARIST AND MANNA PART TWO This week s reading from the Gospel of John (6:24-35) refers back to the feeding of the 5000 proclaimed in the Gospel reading of last week. The crowd had followed Jesus after he had fed them. He implied that they had followed him because they were fed an ordinary food bread. Jesus then ties the bread back to an historical event which the Jews understood the feeding of the Israelites in the desert by God with manna. The first reading, from the Book of Exodus (16:2-4, 12-15) relates the story of how the people were grumbling because they were starving in the desert and were inclined to return to slavery in Egypt where they would at least have some food. The reward for their grumbling against God was the miracle of the manna. Since this food did not exist in Egypt, they did not understand what it was so they asked, What is this? which is currently pronounced manna. In actuality, manna is the honey-like dropping from the tamarisk tree. It contains glucose and sucrose but no protein. It can be harvested in quantity. Manna was provided to the Israelites until they reached the borders of Canaan - a period of 40 years (Exodus 16:35). Since this food was provided by God, it was called the bread from heaven (Psalm 105:40) and the bread of angels (Psalm 78:25). The entire 16 th chapter of the Book of Wisdom is devoted to the story of the manna and refers to it by both of these names. Jewish apocalyptic literature contained beliefs that the treasury of manna would descend again upon the people in the Messianic Age. There is one story in that literature which claims that the bread provided immortality. Jesus used the information which the Jews already knew to extend it to a concept that was new for them. He started to refer to the bread from heaven but, then, called it the bread from God and, later, the bread of life. He had changed the subject from the physical bread which was provided in the desert to a spiritual bread to be provided in the future. Little did they know that they were the first ones to be taught of the mystery of the Eucharist. We will find out what the people did with this revelation in the next two readings from John. Deacon Jim Food supplies in our parish food pantry are a little low at this time. Therefore, we would like to request the following items to replenish the pantry: Evaporated milk, powdered milk, cereal, peanut butter & jelly, canned tuna, chicken or assorted meats, brown and white rice, jiffy box mixes or bread mixes, canned fruit/fruit cups and snacks. At this time, we have an ample supply of can vegetables so we really would appreciate the above listed items. Thank you so much for your continued generosity, it is greatly Appreciated!!!!

6 We have down sized our waste dumpster, since we have not been filling it up due to having additional recycling dumpster. This change also saves us more than $70.00 monthly. These dumpsters are for parish use only. If you take the garbage out after a church activity, please place it in the proper dumpster. The dead plants and flowers and soil should go to the blue dumpster -Yard Waste. The recyclable materials should to the dumpster labeled we sort and all others to the waste dumpster. See for details. Recyclable Materials Yard Waste Other Waste SCHOOL SUPPLIES FOR MANY MORE IN NEED There has been an overwhelming response to the request for school supplies to help our friends in Haiti. Thank you for your generosity. Our hope is to deliver these personally to Fr. Etienne and his students. While we have reached our goal for the Haiti school children, we have the opportunity to broaden our outreach to include needs locally as well as Puerto Rico, if possible. With the continued school supplies collection, we are now able to help local disadvantaged communities and families in our area. To address these local needs, we have expanded the list of needed items which are listed here: backpacks, #2 pencils, pencil sharpeners, pencil erasers, pencil box, blue and/or black ballpoint pens, red pens/pencils, colored pencils, colored markers, yellow or pink highlighter markers, 24 pk. crayons, 3-subject notebooks, spiral notebooks white, lined notebook paper, pocket folders, Post-It Notes, glue sticks, rulers, blunt-nose scissors, index cards Please place your items in the box marked 'School Supplies' located in the vestibule. The church office is open for drop off Tuesday through Friday from 8:30am - 2:00pm as well. We'll be collecting the school supplies through the end of August. Thank you for continued generosity as we help those in need. St. John Outreach in conjunction with the OFS (Order of Franciscans Secular) and the Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart Convent in Frankfort are sponsoring a drive to help the Catholic Charities Refugee Resettlement Program. Catholic Charities helps refugees who are located in the Uptown neighborhood of Chicago. This is the area just to the south of the Loyola University campus. One of the ways they help those seeking asylum in the US is to provide them with gift cards to buy groceries, clothing, and other necessities. St. John will be collecting these gift cards from now until the end of September. If you would like to contribute towards this effort, please purchase gift cards of any denomination from major retail stores and place your gift cards in the collection basket during Mass. 7 SAVE THE DATE-All Ministry Leads Meeting This year s calendar meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, September 5th at 7pm in the Social Hall. During the meeting we ll review dates on the calendar and review other administrative items as we begin a new fiscal year. Ministry leads: please come to this meeting with a list of your meeting dates for your ministry gatherings/events, so that we can begin to fill in the Google calendar. Women s Club New Member Registration The St. John Women s Club is looking for ladies of the parish (18 years and older) to join our ministry. Members of the Women s Club will be available after each of the Masses the weekend of August to provide you information about the Women s Club, the activities and charity work we re involved in and register you as a new member. Please consider joining we look forward to involving you in the fun, spirituality and community bonding that we all share in. WOMEN S CLUB RUMMAGE SALE The St. John Women's Club will hold its annual Rummage Sale, September 20th and 21st from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm and on September 22nd from 9:00 am -12:00 noon in the Church Social Hall. There will be a parishioners-only sale September 19 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Household items, tools, electronics, jewelry, toys, holiday decorations (no Christmas trees, clothes, or televisions) and other miscellaneous treasures will be needed. Please take the time to gather your items and bring them to the Social Hall from September 2nd to the 16th, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.

8 WORK IN PROCESS FOR THE RENOVATION OF OUR ST. FRANCIS GARDEN! We are in the process of renovating the 'triangle garden' at the office & rectory entrance where our old St. Francis statue has stood for many years. With the addition of the new concrete ramp leading to the office last year, the old sidewalk was no longer functional and recently removed, expanding the potential of the original 'triangle' garden. Because the old St. Francis statue has been badly weathered after many repairs, it will be replaced along with new garden enhancements. Our plan is to create a meditative garden complete with benches, statuary and flowers flowing from our Mary Grotto garden, giving honor to St. Francis, for all to enjoy. Would anyone like to help in the construction of this new garden renovation with ideas, materials or work? We are looking for any help that can be offered, including any donation, flowers or statuary that would be appropriate for our St. Francis meditative garden. So far we have a few plants, stone animals and a donated concrete St. Francis statue. Work will be starting this weekend and progress until completed. CALLING ALL CREATIVE CARPENTERS! After the completion of the new deck in Father's garden area, we have some left over wood materials. Rather than taking the wood back to the store, why not utilize it by creating a few simple wooden benches? They will be much appreciated and utilized on a regular basis with all of the many gatherings in the garden areas. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In 1794, a young Irishwoman befriended two widows aboard ship while emigrating to America. They bought a house in Philadelphia and began to live a community life under the direction of a priest. Soon they relocated to Washington. There, the "pious ladies," as the neighbors called them, were asked by their priest friend, by then the president of Georgetown University, to begin a religious community. In 1799 they established a branch of the Visitation Order founded by Saint Jane de Chantal and Saint Francis de Sales in the 1620s. The unique vision of this order followed a sensible routine, less arduous and more flexible than most traditions, and also accepted widows and older women. Amazingly, this American outpost of the Visitation began without reference to the "rule" of the Order. Most of the European convents had been lost under the "reign of terror," and the rules and customs of the community could not be obtained. A copy of the rule was discovered in 1812, and in 1816 the pope officially established the monastery. By then, some French nuns had regrouped, and they sent a habit and cross to be copied. (No religious wore the habit in public in the United States until after the Civil War.) From the beginning, the Georgetown nuns had an educational mission, even though they discovered in the "rule" that such work was officially off-limits for the contemplative life. In America, the nuns depended on a school for their livelihood, so the rule was adapted. Today, the Academy of the Visitation is a thriving example of excellence in Catholic education, and the adjacent monastery is the oldest monastic foundation in the original thirteen United States. --Rev.
