3 Welcome Fr. Łukasz! Fr. Łukasz Rygiel will be with our St. John parish family through Labor Day weekend. He will celebrate Mass here, visit with parishioners, participate in ministry meetings, and of course, share in fellowship here at St. John. Fr. Lukasz was born on January 15th, 1979 in Sanok, Poland. He completed grammar school and high school in Sanok and in 1998 went to the Seminary in Przemysl and was ordained a priest in Fr. Łukasz worked as associate pastor in Sieniawa while teaching religion in the local schools. From September 1st, 2008 to June 30th, 2009, Fr. Łukasz studied spirituality in Loppiano, Italy at the Focolari School. From 2009 to 2012, Fr. Łukasz worked as associate pastor at the Cathedral in Przemysl. From 2012 to 2017, Fr. Łukasz worked as an associate at the Sacred Heart Parish in Sanok. For the past year, he has been preparing himself for his missionary work in Cuba at the Center of Missionary Formation in Warsaw, Poland. Fr. Łukasz will start his work in Cuba this October 1st. We are blessed to have him at Saint John s for the next several weeks. Thank you for making Fr. Lukasz feel at home here at St. John. I look forward to introducing Fr. Lukasz to all of you. 4 GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEP- ER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE July 29, th Sunday in Ordinary Time Have you ever wanted to be part of something bigger? Even the most independent among us likes to make changes and have an impact on others. In this Sunday's Gospel reading, Jesus demonstrates one of his most iconic miracles - the multiplication of the loaves. It is a sign of the institution of the Eucharist, when we are fed not by bread but by the Body of Christ. In the stories of ancient pagan gods, mighty deeds were done entirely under the gods' own power. Mortals may have offered sacrifices to start the chain of events, but they played little role in the miraculous works themselves. Jesus is entirely different. The multiplication of the loaves is a prime example not only of Jesus' power over nature, but of the way he equips his disciples. First, Jesus asks Philip a question "to test him." Jesus has seen the crowds and "he himself knew what he was going to do," but he wants his disciples to start thinking about the problem and its solution. Andrew offers a suggestion, though he isn't confident in it. "There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what good are these for so many?" Jesus honors Andrew's suggestion, takes the offered loaves, and delegates the Apostles to bring order to the crowd. When the crowd has been fed, the Apostles "gather the fragments left over." In the process, they discover with wonder that bread has been produced in super abundance. In the sacraments, God works through simple matter to make grace real in our lives. He works in and through us as well. Are you facing problems that could have spiritual solutions? Is there a need in your parish or community that you could meet? Whatever our hesitancies, Jesus honors our simple loaves and fishes. He invites us to participate in his generous work of redemption, just as we are. MEDITACIÓN EVANGÉLICO - ALENTAR EN- TENDIMIENTO MÁS PROFUNDO DE LA ESCRI- TURA (Gospel Meditation) 29 de julio de º Domingo del tiempo ordinario La lectura de Reyes y el Evangelio están entrelazadas por el misterioso milagro de multiplicación del pan, de lo poco a lo mucho. Humanamente, en el episodio de la multiplicación, el sirviente de Eliseo y Felipe no calcularon lo que necesitarían para saciar el hambre de la multitud. Sin embargo, la misericordia de Dios, como siempre, se excede en abundancia al dar crédito a la falta de cálculo de los encargados de repartir el pan. En el libro de Reyes, Eliseo, con veinte panes, logra saciar el hambre de cien personas. Eliseo le dice a su sirviente: "Dáselos y que coman, porque esto dice Yavé: comerán y sobrará. Les sirvieron, comieron y les sobró, tal como lo había dicho Yavé" (2 Re. 4:43-44). En el Evangelio, Jesús, con cinco panes y dos pescados solamente, da de comer a unas cinco mil personas, y recogieron doce canastos llenos con los pedazos que no se habían comido (Jn. 6:12-13). Nadie puede estar preparado para la superabundancia de los regalos de Dios por medio de Jesús. En nuestra experiencia, tener abundancia de bienes y riqueza usualmente es un signo de trabajar mucho o heredar bienes. En las lecturas de este domingo, la abundancia es señal segura de los dones que recibimos de Dios. Para los discípulos de Jesús, que somos todos los bautizados, la grandeza de parte de Dios por medio de su Hijo Jesús es la Eucaristía que vivimos cada domingo. En la vida, existen otras abundancias de las que se debe agradecer. La familia y los amigos que disfrutamos alrededor de nosotros. Hemos calculado estas maravillas?

5 THE EUCHARIST (PART ONE) On this Sunday and for the three Sundays following, the Gospel readings are taken from the sixth chapter of the Gospel according to John. The subject of all four of these passages is the Eucharist. In today s reading (6:1-15), John tells the story of the feeding of 5000 men with only 5 barley loaves and two fish. We are probably so familiar with this story that we can easily overlook the enormity of the miracle. By the way, this is the only miracle that is present in all four of the Gospels, because it foretells of the Eucharist. Let s look at this feat of feeding the crowd in more detail. If there were 5000 men in the crowd, there must have been an even greater number of women and children. Some scholars estimate that the total crowd size exceeded 20,000. If each person there were to receive only 2 ounces of the bread, the total amount of bread consumed would equal 2,500 pounds, or one and one-quarter tons. That is a lot of bread to get from only 5 loaves. But this miracle pales when compared to the miracle of the Eucharist itself. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, there are over 350 parishes. If each parish has 3 weekend Masses and 200 people attend each Mass, the total number of people receiving the Bread of Life at those Masses would be 210,000 more than 10 times the number who received the ordinary bread. If all the dioceses in the world would be taken into account and the time frame expanded from one weekend to 20 centuries, the number would be so large that it would make the federal deficit appear to be petty cash. The sheer size of the miracle, however, is not the most important part of the miracle. The most important part of the miracle is that this tiny wafer, which looks, feels and tastes like ordinary bread, is really the body and blood, soul and divinity of Jesus, the Christ, the Son of God. We will hear more about this in the next three Gospel readings. In the meantime, we can remember that we attest to the presence of Jesus in this miracle of the Eucharist when we respond to the minister s statement, The Body of Christ. with a heartfelt and hearty Amen! Deacon Jim Detloff Food supplies in our parish food pantry are a little low at this time. Therefore, we would like to request the following items to replenish the pantry: Evaporated milk, powdered milk, cereal, peanut butter & jelly, canned tuna, chicken or assorted meats, brown and white rice, jiffy box mixes or bread mixes, canned fruit or fruit cups and snacks.. 6 Celebrating Sacraments The Lamacki family recently celebrated the sacraments of Baptism and First Communion for Abiliene Rose Favorite and Karydan Lucille Favorite. Both girls celebrated their sacraments during the 10am Mass with their St. John family. Let us continue to welcome and support these young ladies as they journey on their faith formation. Blessings to Abiliene, Karydan and their families. SCHOOL SUPPLIES FOR MANY MORE IN NEED There has been an overwhelming response to the request for school supplies to help our friends in Haiti. Thank you for your generosity. Our hope is to deliver these personally to Fr. Etienne and his students. While we have reached our goal for the Haiti school children, we have the opportunity to broaden our outreach to include needs locally as well as Puerto Rico, if possible. With the continued school supplies collection, we are now able to help local disadvantaged communities and families in our area. To address these local needs, we have expanded the list of needed items which are listed here: backpacks, #2 pencils, pencil sharpeners, pencil erasers, pencil box, blue and/or black ballpoint pens, red pens/pencils, colored pencils, colored markers, yellow or pink highlighter markers, 24 pk. crayons, 3-subject notebooks, spiral notebooks white, lined notebook paper, pocket folders, Post-It Notes, glue sticks, rulers, blunt-nose scissors, index cards Please place your items in the box marked 'School Supplies' located in the vestibule. The church office is open for drop off Tuesday through Friday from 8:30am - 2:00pm as well. We'll be collecting the school supplies through the end of August. Thank you for continued generosity as we help those in need. St. John Outreach in conjunction with the OFS (Order of Franciscans Secular) and the Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart Convent in Frankfort are sponsoring a drive to help the Catholic Charities Refugee Resettlement Program. Catholic Charities helps refugees who are located in the Uptown neighborhood of Chicago. This is the area just to the south of the Loyola University campus. One of the ways they help those seeking asylum in the US is to provide them with gift cards to buy groceries, clothing, and other necessities. St. John will be collecting these gift cards from now until the end of September. If you would like to contribute towards this effort, please purchase gift cards of any denomination from major retail stores and place your gift cards in the collection basket during Mass. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Last Wednesday, the greatest pilgrimage in our tradition ended with the feast of Saint James at his shrine in Compostela, Spain. Every year, as many as a hundred thousand persons walk a portion of the medieval way of the pilgrim, earning the right to wear the scallop shell symbol of this journey of faith. In legend, this city on the northern coast of Spain is the final resting place of the apostle, and the full name of the cathedral is Saint James of the Field of Stars. There is a tradition that Saint James the Great preached there. In the Roman Catholic tradition, the pilgrimage, like any procession, is a symbol, life s journey distilled, a powerful sign of our journey toward a certain goal. The perils of the road, the support of companions, the contemplative slower pace of life, have the potential to transform and renew the pilgrims in ways that last a lifetime. Along the way, the distinctions between rich and poor fall away, and everyone shares humble rustic food and stops for the night in hostels or under the stars. After a long walk, the experience of entering through the great doors into the vast cathedral filled with incense, light, and song is a foretaste of heaven. The pilgrims often say that their whole lives are redirected toward that moment of entry into the heavenly Jerusalem. The most memorable feature of the cathedral is called the botofumeiro, an incense burner on pulleys and chains that sweeps through the cathedral in immense circles, swirling clouds of sweet-smelling incense around the vast nave.
