Dear Parishioners of St. John, This past Monday and Tuesday, October 1-2, I attended the Renew My Church Summit. Priests, Deacons, Parish Staffs and Lay Ministers gathered to learn more about Divine Renovation and give input on who we are as a church and in which direction we should be heading. We came together in response to Jesus Christ s call for the renewal of His Church in our archdiocese. I encourage all of you to pray for the Renew My Church Initiative. Remember that this Sunday, October 7 at 1PM we will have the blessing of our animals by St. Francis Garden. Let s continue to keep each other in prayer, Fr. Karol Anointing of the Sick Next weekend, October 13/14 we will offer the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick after all Masses. In the Church's Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, through the ministry of the priest, it is Jesus who touches the sick to heal them from sin and sometimes even from physical ailment. Please contact our parish office to schedule Fr. Karol s visit to those who are homebound, and unable to attend our church next weekend. Let s Remember to Pray Rosary The Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, which every year is celebrated on October 7th, this year it falls on a Sunday. The month of October is the month of Our Lady. Our Lady of Fatima encourages us to pray for peace in the world by reciting the holy rosary. Let s find time this month to pray the rosary asking for Mary s interception for our church and our world. Fr. Lukasz Rygiel already in Cuba Fr. Lukasz was with us at St. John s this past summer. On October 1st he started his missionary work in Cuba. In the pictures below you can see Fr. Lukasz at his send off Mass in Poland. Let s continue to keep him in our prayers.

GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEP- ER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE October 07, th Sunday in Ordinary Time "Whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it." This verse is part of a beautiful reflection on childlike faith. We're reminded of the innocence of children, how eager they are to experience life and how quick they are to trust. Rarely do we hear it with the story that immediately proceeds it. The Pharisees question Jesus on the lawfulness of divorce! Hardly the sort of thorny moral conversation one typically has in front of children. Yet here we are. Jesus' response goes further back then the Mosaic law. "From the beginning, God made them male and female? the two shall become one flesh? what God has joined together, no human being must separate." Jesus cites a particular set of passages from Genesis 1 and 2, before the Fall in Genesis 3. Adam and Eve possessed original innocence. How eager they were to encounter one another and to explore the garden! How immediate their initial trust in God. We no longer live in Eden. As we age in our fallen world, our childlike trust is wounded and betrayed. We become hardened to the beauties of life. We're quick to find a way around difficult moments. In brief, things become complicated as we lose our innocence. The teachings of Christ and the Church on sexuality become more challenging or more objectionable. Jesus recognizes this in today's Gospel. His invitation is not to compromise with our broken reality. It is a return to beauty, to the fullness of life as it was meant to be. We can affirm our trust in God. We can view life with gratitude. We can experience healing of our lost innocence. This is possible today -- now! -- by grace. Indeed, "the kingdom of God belongs to such as these."

Fellowship MOVIE NIGHT The movie, The Lion in Winter, will be shown on Wednesday, October 17 th at 7:00 p.m. in the Social Hall. If you're able, members of the Women s Club and all parishioners are invited to donate packages of these underwear requests and drop them off in the Social Hall. Please bring items to, our next Women s Club meeting on October 8th. We will pray the Rosary at this month s meeting, and have a guest speaker also. Hope you can join us. Thank you in advance for your generosity. How to Pray the Rosary? Using beads to count prayers is an ancient tradition, and not unique to the Catholic faith. The rosary as we know it today has evolved over time from its original loop of fifty beads marked out three times (to account for 150 prayers representing all the psalms) to its present configuration of five decades with some additional prayers. The rosary is begun by reciting the Apostles' Creed while holding the cross that hangs from the loop. The Lord's Prayer is prayed on the first bead on the way up from the cross to the loop joiner. Then three Hail Mary's are prayed on the next three beads (often interpreted as prayers for an increase of faith, hope, and charity), followed by a Glory Be. Another Lord's Prayer opens the first decade, which continues with ten Hail Marys, and concludes with a Glory Be, prayed while holding the chain between the final Hail Mary of the decade and the next bead for the Lord's Prayer. The prayer and meditation of the five decades is directed to one of the mysteries of which there are four sets (Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious, and Luminous). There are booklets that offer scriptural meditations for each of the beads as well, providing an opportunity to enrich this traditional prayer with excerpts from the word of God.

BUILDING THE DOMESTIC CHURCH by Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson EVERY CHRISTIAN FAMILY IS CALLED TO BE A PRIVILEGED PLACE OF EVANGELIZATION, WHERE LOVE IS REVEALED AND COMMUNICATED In my column last month, I discussed Pope Paul VI s great encyclical on evangelization, Evangelii Nuntiandi, in which he cites the Second Vatican Council s description of the Christian family as the domestic church. For Paul VI, the title domestic church means that there should be found in every Christian family the various aspects of the entire Church. A central teaching of the Second Vatican Council is that every Christian is called to holiness. And since the family is the primary community in which a person matures, it is clear that the Christian family should be a place in which we are helped to grow in holiness. As the saints have shown throughout history, holiness leads inevitably to witness in our daily lives. In our time especially, the work of evangelization is not reserved only for an elite few, but is the responsibility of all baptized Christians. In a very real sense, we are all called to be missionaries. We are all called to proclaim the Gospel to those around us through our lives each day, and the privileged place for most of us to do this is within our own families. Because of this reality, the Christian family is essentially missionary in character. In the words of St. John Paul II, The family has the mission to guard, reveal and communicate love (Familiaris Consortio, 17). In living out this mission, the Christian family is itself called to be an image of the loving communion that exists among the three persons of the Trinity. Indeed, the Christian family is able to reveal and communicate this love in a special way because it is founded upon sacramental marriage. Christian spouses first receive this love as a divine gift but they also receive this love as a task. The task of Christian spouses to live and communicate this love, first to each other and to their children and then to others around them, is at the center of the family s mission in the world. For this reason, when the Christian family takes up the task to become what it is a living icon in our world of God s own communion the family stands at the heart of the Church s mission of evangelization (cf. FC, 17). And when the family responds in this way to the design of the Creator, it truly becomes a domestic church. Recently, Pope Francis reminded us that Christian families are the domestic church where Jesus grows in the love of a married couple, in the lives of their children. In the months ahead, the Knights of Columbus will launch a new initiative in which I invite every Knights of Columbus family and council to participate. Titled Building the Domestic Church: The Family Fully Alive, this initiative will help our families better become what they are called to be. Through this program, our families can embrace more fully their mission to be authentic domestic churches through daily prayer, catechesis and Scripture reading, as well as through monthly charitable and volunteer projects that they can do as a family. More information will soon be forthcoming in Columbia, on kofc.org and in materials sent directly to local councils. With this initiative, the Knights of Columbus turns in a special way to the Holy Family. We make our own the prayer of St. John Paul II that every family may generously make its own contribution to the coming of his kingdom in the world and through the intercession of the Holy Family of Nazareth, the Church may fruitfully carry out her worldwide mission in the family and through the family. Vivat Jesus! Check out the Domestic Church Kiosk & Booklet Set located in the vestibule.

Like the apartheid laws in South Africa in the last century, the penal laws of Ireland were aimed at depriving the majority population of basic human rights. The Protestant parliament of Ireland enacted laws limiting the practice of Catholicism. The goal was to force conversion from "popery" to the Church of Ireland, and additional laws took aim at Jews, non-anglicans, and Quakers. There were laws against intermarriage, laws against Catholics being lawyers (there was a one-hundred-pound fine), a law granting lifelong income to priests who became Protestant, and a ban on weapons. In fact, until 1793, a Catholic man had to recruit and pay a Protestant man to serve in the local militia in his place! As if family life is not complicated enough in any age, the sons of a deceased father could divide his land equally, unless one became Protestant. In that case all would go to him! When allowed, new Catholic churches had to be built of wood, not stone, be off a main road or city square, have no steeple or bell, and be called a "chapel." Catholic "Emancipation" was largely secured by 1829, but even up to the founding of the Irish State in the 1920s, some effects of the laws endured. No wonder that poor Irish immigrants to the United States frequently built gloriously beautiful churches as their first act on free soil!
