3 How to Recite the Chaplet of Divine Mercy The Chaplet of Mercy is recited using ordinary rosary beads of five decades. The Chaplet is sometimes preceded by two opening prayers from the Diary of Saint Faustina and followed by a closing prayer. Make the Sign of the Cross: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen. Optional Opening Prayers: You expired, Jesus, but the source of life gushed forth for souls, and the ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world. O Fount of Life, unfathomable Divine Mercy, envelop the whole world and empty Yourself out upon us. O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fountain of Mercy for us, I trust in You! Our Father: Our father, Who art in heaven, hallowed by Thy name; Thy Kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, Amen. Hail Mary: Hail Mary, full of grace, The Lord is with thee. Blessed art though amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death, Amen. The Apostle s Creed: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, Our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended to the dead. One the third day, He rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. The Eternal Father: Eternal Father, I offer you the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of your Dearly Beloved Son, Our Lord, Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world. On the Ten Small Beads of Each Decade: For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and the whole world. Repeat the remaining decades: Saying the Eternal Father (6) on the Our Father bead and then 10 For the sake of His sorrowful Passion (7) on the following Hail Mary beads. Conclude with Holy God (Repeat three times): Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

4 GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE April 8, nd Sunday of Easter, Divine Mercy Sunday Should we be a little easier on Thomas? The last few days have been a whirlwind. On Thursday, a Passover celebration went horribly awry as Jesus was betrayed and taken into custody for unstated crimes. Less than 24 hours later, the simple arrest has turned into a death sentence to be carried out that very afternoon. Most of the disciples fled, including Thomas. He would have heard of the events of Good Friday secondhand, in shock over the death of his Lord and Master. Then Sunday morning arrives with joy from a few disciples-jesus is risen! But there is no persistent sight of him, only Mary Magdalene's quick moment in the garden and an empty tomb. Another day passes. The Apostles are gathered that Monday night, but Thomas is absent. He returns to a jubilant report of the risen Lord. Again, Thomas has seen nothing. The experience must have been surreal. Did Jesus really appear raised from the dead? Did he really suffer and die? Has all of this been some strange hoax? Desperate for an answer, Thomas insists, "Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nail marks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe." After his resurrection, Jesus' body--mangled and bloody from the crucifixion--is restored. Did it need the scars? A perfected body would have taught us one lesson: everything is renewed as it once was, the past erased. Jesus chooses another lesson, however. He retains his scars that we might know him. In the whirlwind of our lives, we make our own mistakes, our own betrayals and compromises. In the resurrected Jesus, we see a God who does not forget his own sorrow. We are invited to meet him--wound for wound--and place our hand on his own nail-scarred palm, the eternal sign of his everlasting mercy. MEDITACIÓN EVANGÉLICO - ALENTAR ENTENDIMIENTO MÁS PROFUNDO DE LA ESCRITURA (Gospel Meditation) 8 de Abril de º Domingo de Pascua, Divina Misericordia Estamos viviendo el Misterio Pascual en plenitud. Hoy celebramos el Domingo de la Misericordia instituido por San Juan Pablo II. En el año 2000 el Papa San Juan Pablo II canonizó a Santa Faustina y durante la ceremonia declaró que cada segundo domingo de Pascua se celebraría en toda la Iglesia el Domingo de la Divina Misericordia. El dijo lo siguiente en su homilía. "Y tú, Faustina, don de Dios a nuestro tiempo, don de la tierra de Polonia a toda la Iglesia, concédenos percibir la profundidad de la misericordia divina, ayúdanos a experimentarla en nuestra vida y a testimoniarla a nuestros hermanos". Santa Faustina, en nuestro tiempo con su ejemplo nos muestra la gran misericordia de Dios por medio de su Hijo Jesús. Santo Tomás de personalidad obstinada e incrédula se encuentra con la Divina Misericordia al ver a Jesús Resucitado sereno y entendiendo su incredulidad le dice. "Pon aquí tu dedo y mira mis manos; extiende tu mano y métela en mi costado. Deja de negar y cree". (Juan 20:27). Todos tenemos algo de Santo Tomás. Algunas veces nuestra incredulidad es razonable y prudente. Otras veces es sin sentido y nos pierde de oportunidades de cambio de vida. Lo importante es saber que cuando estamos en circunstancias parecidas a Santo Tomás, y dejándose guiar el Señor Jesús toma la iniciativa y suavemente nos mueve a continuar. Es sólo estando con el Señor que seremos portadores de la paz en nuestros corazones. Pidamos esta semana por la paz en las familias, comunidad y en el mundo. Sabiendo, que la Divina Misericordia nunca nos abandona.

7 A SPECIAL IDEA In 1976, Father Frank Menarik proposed to the parish a special idea that he had for a St. John Parish Family chalice. This chalice would be made of silver and gold. Its design would include etchings of Christ as the Vine, and people, representing the parishioners, as the branches. Many of the figures would be carrying gems above their heads as offerings to Christ. Father Frank asked the parishioners to donate silver, gold, and gems to be used in the making of this sacred vessel. He was hopeful that no materials would be used other than those donated by the parish. The response was tremendous. Parishioners began donating all sorts of silver and gold items to be used in the making of the chalice. Mrs. Edwin Skonicki donated all of the soup spoons from the silver service she inherited from her mother. Rings, earrings, coins, watches, service pins, candlesticks, silver pieces, even gold teeth, were donated by the parishioners. An elderly lady who had been married for 55 years donated her deceased husband's wedding ring. Taking off her own wedding ring, she handed it to Father Frank saying, Where my husband s ring goes, so goes mine. Marian Schmidt donated a beautiful diamond she had inherited from a friend. Not be be outdone, two little girls gave Father Menark, a plastic bag of crushed rock they had picked up from their driveway. They told Father they heard him say e need precious stones. There seemed to be no end to the people s generosity. Even the visiting clergy caught the spirit. Father Paul White and Father John O'Callahan donated their personal chalices to the parish collection. Everyone liked the proposed chalice and they love the idea of making so personal an offering to God. Father Frank s expectations were fulfilled. The chalice was completed according to its original design. Its craftsmanship is so excellent that it was selected by the Chicago Archdiocese as a parish art treasure, and was put on display during the Archdiocesan Sesquicentennial Exhibit. St. John Church, PARISH TREASURE CHALICE The Parish Treasure Chalice was designed by Father Frank Menarik and his brother Father Aloysius Menark. Fr. Frank invited parishioners to donate semi-precious and precious stones so that they could be incorporated into its design. The chalice was crafted by Joseph Bemi. Three green spirals arise from the base to honor the Blessed Trinity. Centered on the cup is Christ encircled with figures representing the St. John parish community. The stones are symbolic offerings of themselves, their time and their talents to the Lord Reprinted from Page 103 Celebrating a Century of Worship. 8 . Women of St. John s Parish are still welcome to sign up for CRHP Renewal Weekend. Renewal weekend will be April 21-22, CRHP Renewal week end is an excellent way to fulfill your spiritual journey. Sign-ups will be after all Masses April 7 th & 8 th or you may call the parish office and leave your name and number. WOMEN S CLUB The Women's Club will meet on Monday, April 9 at 7:00 PM. Following a brief meeting, and nomination of officers, Vince DeLaurentis will present a program on defensive driving. All women of the Parish are invited. Hope to see you there!! SAVE THE DATE! On Saturday, May 5th, the Outreach Ministry will sponsor the 2nd Annual Cinco de Mayo event, a fundraiser for our ministry work. It will take place from 6:00-10:00 pm in the Social Hall. We'll have a taco station, drinks, music, dancing, and plenty of fun. Tickets are $15 for adults and kids 12+; $10 for kids ages 5-12; no charge for kids 4 and under. Ticket sales will begin in mid-april. This year, you'll have the opportunity to be a 'sponsor' of the event. There are three sponsorship levels available, which provide you 1 or 2 free tickets to the event, and your name listed in the parish bulletin, event program and on our Facebook page. The sponsorship is an effort to help us reach a financial goal for the Outreach Ministry so that we can help our Catholic brothers and sisters in other locations.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Sometimes children acquire nicknames in childhood that stalk them through adulthood: Pinky, Boo-boo, and the like. This Sunday was once called Low Sunday, a step down from Easter glory, and an unfortunate nickname since Easter rejoicing goes on for fifty days. Traditionally this is the day when the newly baptized put away their white baptismal robes and returned to their everyday life after a week of intense celebration. Of course, the goal was to take up everyday duties with a very new point of view. A long title for the day was Dominica in albis deposito, or The Lord s Day for Putting Away the Albs, so no wonder the nickname Low Sunday arose. In the old calendar it was also called Quasimodo Sunday, after the first word of the opening chant, Quasimodo geniti infantes, or As newborn infants, a reference to the newly baptized taken from the Epistle of Peter. Victor Hugo s bell-ringing hero in The Hunchback of Notre Dame was abandoned as an infant on the threshold of the cathedral of Paris on Low Sunday, 1467, and named Quasimodo for the feast. Rev.
