3 Dear Parishioners of St. John Parish, This weekend we gather in our church to celebrate Pentecost. We hear from the Acts of the Apostles how the Holy Spirit filled all who were gathered and gave them the ability to speak in different tongues. We who gather at St. John come from various cultures, we are able to speak various languages and the Holy Spirit brings us together to form one family of St. John Parish. This weekend we celebrate the Taste of St. John and we are able to share our ethnic foods and backgrounds. I am grateful to all who have helped organize this event and to all of you who brought food to share. Pope Francis is calling the Youth of the world to join him in Panama City, Panama this coming January. There is an opportunity for the youth of our parish to join him during World Youth Day January 22 27, If you or someone you know is between the ages and is available during this time and would like to join us, please contact me as soon as possible. There is a program that covers 2/3 of the cost for this pilgrimage and I hope that some of our youth will take advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I would like to share with you a picture of my mom with her flowers. This picture was recently taken during my recent trip home. I am grateful to Arts & Environment and Garden ministry for beautifying our church and grounds for making me feel at home. Let us continue to keep each other in our prayers Fr. Karol.

4 GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE May 20, 2018 Pentecost Sunday Today we celebrate the "birthday of the Church!" Pentecost is described in the first reading from the Acts of the Apostles. But before the great driving wind and tongues of fire empowering the Disciples, the Holy Spirit had already arrived. The Gospel for today's Mass during the day is from John 20. Jesus appears to the fearful disciples after his resurrection. He first speaks a message of calm. "Peace be with you." The apostles "rejoiced when they saw the Lord." When the enthusiastic response settles down, Jesus "breathed on them and said to them 'Receive the Holy Spirit.'" This action is Trinitarian, and it has happened before. If you turn your Bible back to the beginning, you'll read: "The Lord God formed man out of the clay of the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life, and so many became a living being" (Genesis 2:7). In the Garden of Eden, we see God's first, original covenant with man. The breath of life signifies that original indwelling of grace, the special state of likeness and friendship with God before the Fall. Here now, in this locked room, the Apostles receive the long-awaited promise: the very breath of God, new life, a new covenant. In the pairing of these two readings--the Pentecost experience in Acts and the breath of Jesus in John's Gospel --we see that the coming of the Holy Spirit is not only an empowering, it is an indwelling. We have each received the breath of grace in our baptism. It is confirmed, strengthened, and deepened in each reception of the sacraments. If we persevere in virtue, the Spirit of God is alive in us, inspiring our actions of love. This Pentecost Sunday, how is the breath of God alive in you? MEDITACIÓN EVANGÉLICO - ALENTAR EN- TENDIMIENTO MÁS PROFUNDO DE LA ESCRITURA 20 de Mayo de 2018 Domingo de Pentecostés La Fiesta de Pentecostés es el culmen de la Pascua, su temática es rico sobre el Espíritu Santo. La antífona de entrada nos recuerda la grandeza de la Liturgia de hoy. "El Espíritu del Señor ha llenado toda la tierra; él da unidad a todas las cosas y se hace comprender en todas las lenguas. Aleluya". (Misal Romano página 225). Todas las lenguas, si las que están basadas en el amor, la compasión y la esperanza. "Ven Espíritu de Dios. Para vivir, te necesitamos como el agua: desciende una vez más sobre nosotros y enséñanos la unidad, renueva nuestros corazones y enséñanos a amar como tú nos amas, a perdonar como tú nos perdonas". Lo dijo el Papa Francisco. (Radio Vaticana 04/06/17). Este Domingo de Pentecostés, celebramos que el Señor resucitado da el Espíritu Santo a sus discípulos. Para que sean testigos y den testimonio de su resurrección y sus enseñanzas, llegando posiblemente hasta el martirio. Este Espíritu glorifica a Jesús. Cómo lo glorifico yo? Cómo es mi testimonio sobre Jesús resucitado? Cómo es mi servicio en el ministerio que represento en la parroquia? Ven, Espíritu Santo! Para que nos comuniques el gusto por las cosas de Dios, si, porque el mundo ha perdido sus valores, las familias ya no se comunican entre ellos. A veces, tenemos que sufrir grandes desastres naturales para saber entendernos. Hemos perdido el valor de cuidar la creación, de respetar la vida humana, y de los animales. Ven te necesitamos y llénanos de tus dones! Sopla sobre nosotros y danos tu paz.

For them, Pentecost was the fiftieth day after Passover, a feast of the first fruits of the harvest. It was the second most important feast of the year. Today, Jews gather on the eve of the feast to study scripture and the law, and after the feast begins at sundown, spend the day in joyful social gatherings. The meaning of the celebration is the giving of the law on Mount Sinai, so for Christians the connection to the gifts of the Holy Spirit is obvious. In Sicily and in the Pantheon in Rome, today the descent of the Holy Spirit is enacted with a stunning ritual. Some churches there have an eye in the roof open to the sky, called an oculus. After the Gospel today, thousands of rose petals fall from the oculus onto the assembly.
