3 Thank you to all who participated in our Parish Mission and to Fr. Tom McCarthy O.S.A. for leading us in this retreat. There s more to come during this Advent Season. This Sunday, December 4th we will have a Christmas Concert. Fr. Benedykt who is the pastor of St. Bernadette Parish in Evergreen Park will be joined by Fr. Brian Barker to lift our spirits up through music. So I hope you will find the time this Sunday at 3 PM to join us in church. Next weekend the Knights of Columbus will host a breakfast with Santa in the Social Hall from 8:00 AM to 12 noon. Remember to bring your children and grandchildren to enjoy eggs, pancakes and sausage. Also next weekend we will have representatives from Little Bethlehem Arts who will display olive wood handcrafted articles in our vestibule. You will be able to purchase some gifts and in the process support the Christian Community in the Holy Land. Once again thank you for you generous support of our Turkey Shoot Raffle. This year we have raised $10, Thank you to our Stewardship committee for their help with the raffle. There are still a few openings available for next year s pilgrimage to Europe. If you are interested in joining me please let me know as soon as you can. Mark your calendars for December 14th at 6:30 PM. We will have our movie night featuring Going My Way along with hot chocolate and cookies. In the Gospel reading for this Second Sunday of Advent we encounter John the Baptist pointing people to Christ. May his call be a reminder for us that this time of Advent is our time of preparation for the coming of Christ into our lives as well. Happy Advent, Fr. Karol ********************************************************************************* Next weekend in our church we will have representatives from The Christian Community in the holy land of Jerusalem and Bethlehem who will be displaying olive wood hand crafted religious figurines and articles. The Christian community in the holy land depends mainly on olive carving and tourism. Due to the political conflict and lack of tourism there, many Christians were forced to leave the holy land. Displaying these works of art religious articles abroad for sale helps these Christians survive and preserve their community. So please take a look after the Mass and get a gift that will be remembered and cherished for yourself or someone else. It is a good time to focus on our faith. Fr. Karol has graciously donated his collection of religious books to be used by all members of our Parish. The collection of books is on a shelf in the vestibule outside the Social Hall. There is a notebook on the top shelf and you are asked to enter your name, date and title of the book. There is no due date, use the item as long as you wish. When you return the book. Please put a line through your name. WOMEN S CLUB NEWS The Women s Club will be selling Christmas Raffle tickets after all Masses on December 3/4 and 10/11 for $1.00. The drawing will take place after the 10:00 Mass on December 11th. The Women s Club Christmas Party will be Monday, December 5th at 6 PM. Please bring a dish to share and an expensive gift for a bingo prize. All women of the parish are welcome to attend.

Not exactly, but his devotion to the Incarnation and his love for the poverty of the Christ Child certainly popularized this beloved custom. Long before Francis, it was a custom at the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome to enshrine a rich image of Mary, gilded and bejewelled, embracing the child Jesus. This church was founded as a kind of home for the feast of Christmas in the fourth century. In 1223, Francis was ready to celebrate this feast in a new way. In the tiny city of Greccio, he asked friends to prepare a place where they could experience the poverty and suffering embraced by Christ in his birth. It was a living scene: an ox from the barn, an ass from the stable, and peasants standing in for shepherds and kings. The night of the celebration was beautiful, the weather was warm, and people came in crowds, bearing candles and singing hymns that echoed through the forest. Francis himself chanted the Gospel and preached. The custom spread quickly, and by the sixteenth century cribs were seasonal features not only in church, but in the home. On December 17, the liturgy begins to unfold the Lord s birth before us, and it s the right time to follow this beautiful tradition. In Germany, each night throughout Advent children prepare a bedding for the manger. At bedtime prayer, a child places a single straw in the manger for each act of devotion or virtue performed during the day.
