3 Congratulations to our Archbishop Blase who this Sunday, August 23 receives his Pallium during 2:15 p.m. Mass at the Holy Name Cathedral. I will be attending this mass, which is opened to the public. If you would like to join me in the celebration, please see the article in this bulletin which is dedicated to this event for details. "Love is Our Mission" this is the title for this year's World Meeting of Families Congress which will take place in Philadelphia. Our Archbishop Blase will be the Pope's delegate to this congress. Please pray for the World Meeting of Families Congress as well as for Pope Francis who will visit our country next month. This past Sunday I participated in the Golf outing for the Knights of Columbus, and I had a lot of fun. I realize I need to work on my golf game. I would like to thank our Grand Night Joel Krezman for organizing this event. On September 1, 2015 I would like to meet with all Alter Servers, Eucharistic Ministers, and Sacristans. KEEPING OUR COMMITMENTS In the musical Fiddler on the Roof, the husband, Tevye, whose marriage was arranged years and years before, wants to know if his wife really loves him. Was their marriage just an arrangement, a deal? Did his wife, after all these years, ever love him? Does she still? We need to know if our loving commitments stick. We need to be reminded and reaffirmed. In the first reading, Joshua, Moses successor, needed to know if the people would remain faithful to their covenant with the Lord. Joshua was going to lead them to a new life a settled life. Would they be faithful? Jesus, who identified himself as the very life of his disciples life, needed to know: Will you also go away or will you stay? We do not often see Jesus this vulnerable. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION REGISTRATION Registration for this year s CCD Program will be held on Saturday, September 12th and Sunday, September 13th and again on Saturday, September 19th and Sunday, September 20th in the Resource Room after all Masses. Students who were here last year are pre-registered. You need only pick up their books and pay tuition. The process will only take a few minutes. New registrants are asked to bring a copy of the child s Baptism certificate. CCD will begin on Sunday, October 4th at 9:00 A.M.

5 Conferral of the Pallium on Archbishop Blase J. Cupich at Holy Name Cathedral on Sunday, August 23 All are Invited - No Tickets Required Chicago, IL (July 23, 2015) Archbishop Blase J. Cupich, who was installed as Archbishop of Chicago on November 18, 2014, will receive the Pallium from the Papal Nuncio at a 2:15 p.m. Mass at Holy Name Cathedral, State and Superior Streets in Chicago, on Sunday, August 23, The Archbishop has requested that there be no ticketed seating in the Cathedral and that anyone who wishes to attend this Mass can do so on a first-come, first-served basis. Lines will begin forming at noon outside the Cathedral. This Mass will be an Archdiocesan celebration, as well as a Provincial celebration, with the bishops of the other five dioceses of Illinois, which are Belleville, Joliet, Peoria, Rockford and Springfield in Illinois, present and concelebrating with Archbishop Cupich. During the opening rites, Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, the Papal Nuncio, will invest Archbishop Cupich with the Pallium, a sign of his unity with Pope Francis, and a symbol of his office as Metropolitan Archbishop. When an Archbishop is appointed to a new archdiocese, he requests the Pallium from the Holy See. The Pallium is a scarf, or stole-like vestment that is worn over the chasuble when the Archbishop celebrates Mass. It is about two-inches wide and it rests on the shoulders, with a pendant or decorative flap in the front and the back. When viewed from the front or the back, the Pallium resembles the letter Y. The Pallium is white, with six black crosses. Three of those crosses, the ones on the front, back and left shoulder, are ornamented with a gold pin, symbolizing the three nails of Christ s crucifixion. Some of the white wool of the Pallium comes from two lambs that are blessed each year by the Pope on January 21, the feast of St. Agnes. In addition, each of the pendants which hang in front and back are tipped with black satin, resembling the hoof of a lamb. The imagery represents the Archbishop, the chief shepherd of the diocese, carrying a lamb on his shoulders, in imitation of Christ the Good Shepherd. Originally, the Pallium was worn only by the Pope but now it is given, by him, to Metropolitan Archbishops as a sign of their unity with the Pope. The conferral of the Pallium on a new Archbishop was originally part of the Rite of Installation of a Bishop when the Nuncio, who is the Pope s delegate in the United States, would confer the Pallium as part of the Rite. Thirty-two years ago, Saint John Paul II took the investiture of the Pallium out of the Rite of Installation, and instead called new Archbishops to Rome where he invested them himself on June 29, the Solemnity of Ss. Peter and Paul. In January of this year, Pope Francis, decided that new Archbishops will once again receive the Pallium in their own Cathedrals, in the midst of their own people. About the Archdiocese of Chicago The Archdiocese of Chicago, the third largest in the United States, serves more than 2.2 million Catholics in Cook and Lake Counties in northeastern Illinois, a geographic area of 1,411 square miles. The Archdiocese is divided into six vicariates and 31 deaneries. This local Church is pastored by Archbishop Blase J. Cupich, assisted by six Episcopal Vicars, each responsible for a vicariate (region).

Every priest had first to be ordained a deacon, but the notion that one could actually embrace a permanent vocation to the diaconate was lost. The primary ministry of the deacon is to the welfare of the community, especially its poor, and his role in sacraments and preaching flows from that. His principal role is to animate and promote the ministry of all the faithful. Ninety percent of permanent deacons are married, although the discipline of celibacy for clerics means that if a deacon is widowed, normally he cannot remarry, nor can an unmarried deacon marry once ordained. The deacon does not preside at Mass nor may he absolve sins. Nor, since anointing of the sick is linked theologically to penance, may he anoint. Sometimes we are slow to engage with a tradition: Trent approved permanent deacons in the 1560s, but nothing was done until the 1960s. The vitality of the long delayed restoration has greatly enriched the Church, particularly in the United States, where the majority of the deacons in the world serve. Rev. James Field, Copyright J.
