3 The readings for the Baptism of the Lord have an Epiphany feel to them. God is revealing something about Jesus, about how to follow Jesus, and ultimately about God s self. The Messiah you have been expecting, God says, has arrived. All will see him. His appearance will be proclaimed from mountaintops. He is the anointed one, the favored one, the beloved Son. Like the Israelite exiles leaving enslavement in Egypt or returning to a restored Jerusalem, his disciples are to imitate him in doing good, living righteously, showing kindness, and bringing about justice without violence - the human power of violence that God s power and word outlast and that has no place with God who cares for people like a shepherd. The place where John the Baptist lived, conducted his ministry, and baptized Jesus is no idyllic respite. Called, then and now, Bethany Beyond the Jordan, on the Jordan side of the Jordan River, it s a hot, dusty plain under unrelenting sun, a shelterless wilderness of tangled reeds and rock, swarming with biting flies. It was here, at nearly 1,400 feet below sea level, the lowest place on earth, that the heavens opened for the prophet Elijah, as he ascended on a fiery chariot a stone s throw from where Christ would one day be baptized. Once again, on the occasion of that baptism, the Holy Spirit descended like a dove and God spoke to his beloved. And centuries earlier it was also in this same spot that Joshua had led the Israelites, who had wandered for so long in the desert, across the river and finally into the Promised Land. Bethany Beyond the Jordan is also called Bethabara, which means place of crossings. It s fitting that it s physically unpleasant, because transitions, especially ones of such magnitude as these, are never easy. But if you are willing to bear the demanding, uncomfortable process of change, imagine what awaits you on the other side! In the picture beneath Fr. 5 lenten celebration. Mardi Gras: February 6th Piles of packages, boxes of beads and oodles and oodles of throws have been delivered. Cartons of festive green, gold and purple decorations are being readied and committee members are busy planning the 18th annual Mardi Gras - a fun-filled celebration for St. John Parish. Gather a group together and fill a table or come and make new friends - either way - you ll have the time of your life. It s a perfect reprieve from the winter woes and joyful pre- For those of you new to St. John and those who never quite made it to Mardi Gras - you re in for a real treat. From the 6pm Social Hour with its cash bar to the 11pm Good-Night ballad, you ll have a great time. You ll be greeted with a Mardi Gras mask and walk through the metallic fringe entry into the festive French Quarter -where you can immerse yourself in the spirit of the traditional Mardi Gras. It s a night of Joie de Vivre and it s all geared to help you celebrate the Mardi Gras slogan of Laissez Le Bon Temps Roulez! or Let the Good Times Roll! What s included? You ll enjoy a full evening of music and dancing to some fun & funky tunes by DJ Romo. Chicken and trimmings with King Cake, a raffle or two, door prizes and of course, the everpopular Mardi Gras parade with throws for everyone. So what are throws? Well, they re exactly what they sound like - items that marchers throw! They include doubloons, beads, trinkets, toys, gimmicks and gags. The throwing of trinkets was started in the early 1870s, and is a time-honored expectation for young and old alike. However, you need to remember to shout the famous phrase, "Throw me something, mister!". Information: Tickets will be available before and after all Masses the weekends of January 16/17, 23/24 and 30/31 for $15 per person. Tickets purchased at the door will be $20 each. (In answer to questions; due to Insurance Liability issues, no outside liquor can be brought to Mardi Gras and no one under 21 years of age will be admitted.) Volunteers will be needed to help with a variety of duties; including decorate, serve, bar tend, sell raffle tickets and be a parader - You can sign up during ticket sale sessions

Share that cheerful greeting with some folks today. They may wonder if you have had any Elvis sightings lately, attended Star Trek conventions, or were Cleopatra in a previous lifetime. Despite the skeptics, today is solidly within the Christmas season. In fact, in some strands of the Christian tradition it represents the clearest manifestation of the mystery of the Incarnation. On Christmas Day, for example, the Gospel reading is the Prologue of John s Gospel, which reveals the glory of Christ shining through our humanity precisely in his baptism. At any rate, this is an ancient feast, celebrated first in Egypt sixteen centuries ago. More than most other ancient people, the Egyptians understood the life giving properties of water. On this day, they drew water from the Nile, so central in the history of their people, and reserved it in honor. Many other places copied the custom, so that St. John Chrysostom wrote of people in Antioch gathering at midnight to collect flowing water into vessels they brought from home since today there is a blessing on the water. At home for dinner tonight, decorate the table with beautiful bowls of water and white candles, toast one another with goblets of sparkling water, and light a Christmas candle in the window one last time.
