3 Dear Parishioners of St. John, This Sunday is the start of our Religious Education Program. I hope it will be a successful year for all of our students filled with wonderful opportunities to learn about God and to grow in faith. Thanks to Andy Perz, teachers and parents who help with our CCD program. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is available after all Masses this weekend. For those who are homebound, please call me at the parish office to arrange for the visit. I am grateful to our KofC for their pancake breakfast this Sunday which gives us an opportunity to spend some time together. I am also thankful to our Fellowship Committee for providing us with delicious taffy apples and chocolate covered parcels. Let s continue to keep each other in prayer, Fr. Karol Congratulations to the newly Baptized Maverick William Robbins (left) and Tanner Jeffrey Webb (right). May God Bless them and their families. St. Francis of Assisi of Pet Blessing On Sunday, October 7th, in honor of the recent feast of St. Francis of Assisi, we had the blessing of the pets. Thanks to all who participated by bringing their companions to the St. Francis garden. St. Francis, pray for us! Let s Remember to Pray Rosary The Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, which every year is celebrated on October 7th, this year it falls on a Sunday. The month of October is the month of Our Lady. Our Lady of Fatima encourages us to pray for peace in the world by reciting the holy rosary. Let s find time this month to pray the rosary asking for Mary s interception for our church and our world.

4 GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEP- ER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE October 14, th Sunday in Ordinary Time Christian author C.S. Lewis once wrote that Christianity is not so much about being nice people but in being "new men." We see this contrast in today's Gospel. "Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus first answers in the predictable way. Follow the commandments! "Teacher, all of these I have observed from my youth." Perhaps for some of us it's easy to answer this way. "I'm a good person!" he seems to reply. Does he truly follow all the commandments he professes to follow? Does he -- in word and deed -- check off all the boxes of the moral law? Perhaps. Whether he's being honest or fudging the truth, Jesus accepts his answer at face value with compassion. "Jesus, looking at him, loved him." But he's not done yet! Jesus wants to remind us that this attitude alone is not enough. "Go, sell what you have? then come, follow me." Jesus' invitation to the young man is radical. Abandon everything that gives you any sense of security. Give it all up for an unknown future with a wandering preacher. The Christian life is not easy. "How hard it is to enter the kingdom of God!" It's easier, Jesus says, for a gigantic camel to squeeze itself through a tiny needle's eye. But the God of the universe creates out of nothing, breaks the bars of hell, and raises the dead to life. Is a needle's eye really such an obstacle? Jesus' invitation is always bigger than our own limitations. This week, what do we need to offer up? How is Jesus inviting us to follow him?

The rosary as we know it today has evolved over time from its original loop of fifty beads marked out three times (to account for 150 prayers representing all the psalms) to its present configuration of five decades with some additional prayers. The rosary is begun by reciting the Apostles' Creed while holding the cross that hangs from the loop. The Lord's Prayer is prayed on the first bead on the way up from the cross to the loop joiner. Then three Hail Mary's are prayed on the next three beads (often interpreted as prayers for an increase of faith, hope, and charity), followed by a Glory Be. Another Lord's Prayer opens the first decade, which continues with ten Hail Marys, and concludes with a Glory Be, prayed while holding the chain between the final Hail Mary of the decade and the next bead for the Lord's Prayer. The prayer and meditation of the five decades is directed to one of the mysteries of which there are four sets (Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious, and Luminous). There are booklets that offer scriptural meditations for each of the beads as well, providing an opportunity to enrich this traditional prayer with excerpts from the word of God.

8 GET INVOLVED! Faith In Action Program Model The new program model takes its inspiration from the Building the Domestic Church initiative, and it greatly emphasizes the faith and spirituality of all Knights of Columbus. In other words, the foundation for this program model is the Building the Domestic Church initiative. Those councils that thoroughly implement the Faith in Action Program will be living and exemplifying the Domestic Church. Be a Leader Take a leadership role in your council, your family and your parish in becoming the Domestic Church. It's what we signed up for as Knights of Columbus. By choosing to be Knights, we have chosen to be different from secular society and to live our faith boldly. Living as the Domestic Church is extremely effective. Throughout all of Judeo-Christian history, there has been nothing more effective at evangelizing the culture than regular, everyday people choosing to live their faith at home and in the public square. Salvation history was changed forever by a family. Encourage your brother Knights to live the Supreme Chaplain's Monthly Challenge. It allows all Knights of Columbus to be united in a simple challenge each month to live their faith. Make intentional choices based in prayer. Each time you choose to live your faith and refrain from activities that pull you away from God, you are living the Domestic Church. Teach others and exemplify that it is the family and council who prays together, goes to Mass weekly, frequents the Sacrament of Confession and (because they realize they are powerless without God), deliberately avoids that which pollutes their minds and hearts. Please stop by the Knights of Columbus kiosk In the vestibule and pick up materials on Building the Domestic Church.

The sponsorship of Ferdinand and Isabella assured that the news would flash around Europe with an air of authority that other "discoverers" lacked. One of the oft-mentioned early visitors is Saint Brendan the Navigator, a sixth-century Irish monk who had trouble staying at home. He is said to have sailed to "the Isle of the Blessed" in a leather-bound boat, and to have been away from his monastery for seven years. Upon his return, the stories of adventures to a new land attracted pilgrims to his monastery in the Blasket Islands, off the west coast of Ireland. Columbus is said to have referred to The Voyage of Saint Brendan, a very popular adventure in those days. Only after his American journey is Brendan said to have gone to tamer lands to the east, England and Scotland. In 1976, Tim Severin set out on a two-year voyage to America from Ireland in a leather-bound boat, traveling in summer and hopscotching from the Faroes to Iceland to Newfoundland, and encountering along the way exactly what Saint Brendan describes: icebergs, whales, and porpoises. Scholars warn not to dismiss this too quickly: just as the ancient Egyptian monks sought to live in the desert, for the Celtic monks exile in a boat was the Irish equivalent. Five centuries after Brendan, other Irish monks may have visited here as a refuge from Viking terror. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.--Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S.
