2 MUNDELEIN SEMINARY DAY TOUR SEPTEMBER 24, 2016 We will be leaving St. John s by bus at 9 AM and plan to be return back to church at approximately 4 PM. The tour will include the bus, a visit to Mundelein Seminary, Mass, lunch in the the cafeteria, and a visit to the Shrine of Maximallian Kolbe in Marytown and the gift shop. The cost is $25.00 per person. 3 Thoughts and questions on Fr. Karol s mind: 1. Why have the gospel readings been so difficult? Perhaps to challenge us in our way of thinking and to emphasize what our priorities in life should be. We are called to be Christ s disciples and this requires us to place Him in the center of our lives. 2. What items should I donate to St. John s rummage sale? Hopefully nothing that any of you have given to me as a gift! I invite you to join me in supporting this year s rummage sale. 2. Why are we having so much rain this year? When I was leaving for Poland the grass around the church was dry and brown, now it feels like a rain forest. Unfortunately, some of our newly planted cherry trees by Mary s Grotto couldn t handle that much moisture, and they turned brown. I hope they will come back in the spring. 3. How many children will we have in our Religious Education Program this year? This question has been on Andy Perz s mind as well. The outcome also depends on you. If you know of someone in your family or neighborhood who would like to join our program, please encourage them to do so. Same goes for our newly formed Youth Ministry Program. Our next Youth Mass in next weekend at 6 PM. 4. When is the choir coming back? Rehearsals will resume on Wednesday, September 21 at 7 PM. Our choir continues to grow and we invite any parishioner who loves to sing to join. 5. What are some new events at St. John s this year? The Daughters of St. Paul will present their books and media resources next weekend in the vestibule of our Church. We will begin our church history classes on September 20th, Mundelein trip will take place on September 24, Advent Parish Mission is scheduled for November 26-29, and our Christmas Concert will take place on Sunday, December 4th at 3 PM. Please mark your calendars. 2. Why did school start already? My nieces and nephews in Poland start grammar school and high school always in the beginning of September. I have been told that many years ago classes did not resume until after Labor Day. At least now students can look forward to this long weekend. So I would like to wish all of you a Happy Labor Day. 11 DAY PILGRIMAGE TO FATIMA, LOURDES AND SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA JULY 11 21, 2017 I invite you to join me on a pilgrimage to Europe, my old continent. Growing up in Poland I was able to visit many countries in Europe but some of the places we will visit on the pilgrimage, I will visit with you for the very first time. We will journey to some of the most sacred shrines and places of prayer and devotion. This pilgrimage will take us to Portugal, Spain and France. My home church in Poland was dedicated to St. Andrew the Apostle but after the fire a new Church of Our Lady of Fatima was built. Our Lady of Fatima was important to me growing up. As we travel to Portugal, we will visit Fatima, where we will celebrate the 100 th anniversary of the apparitions of the Blessed Mother. It was here that she appeared to three children to spread her message of peace. In Spain, our group will visit Santiago de Compostela, famed pilgrimage center and holy city as well as the city of Avila, made famous by St. Theresa. Our tour will also take us to the beautiful cities of Salamanca and Madrid. In France, our travels will take us to Lourdes, where the Virgin Mary appeared to St. Bernadette and where healing occurs even today. There is a wealth of history to be seen and felt in the places we will be visiting and I really look forward to the experience. In addition, a pilgrimage can also be wonderful opportunity for spiritual renewal and prayer. As such, we will celebrate mass daily as a group and try to get to know one another and have a great trip. Whether it be your first time travelling out of the country or even if you have visited some of these places before, I hope you will consider joining me on this pilgrimage. Several people have already signed up and many more have expressed their interest in going on this pilgrimage, so if you are contemplating traveling with us contact me to add your name to the list. Indeed, you may never know when knowledge of our particular vocabulary may come in handy. Such is the case with papal bulls, which conjure up all sorts of images, but are actually not what you might expect. A bull is a papal letter on a matter of great consequence, such as a decision about a crisis in the Church, the declaration of a doctrine, the summoning of a council, or the canonization of a saint. It has a more solemn intention than a mere letter or even an encyclical, a teaching letter circulated through the whole Church. Its odd name comes from the Latin bulla, which is the stamp used to apply a signatorial design to the hot lead, or even molten silver or gold, that seals the decree. The format for the bull is the name of the pope in Latin, followed by the title servant of the servants of God, also in Latin, and then the text. The title of the bull is always the first two words of the text. Some famous papal bulls are Exsurge Domine (Arise, O Lord), written against Martin Luther s Ninetyfive Theses in 1520; Munificentissimus Deus (The Most Bountiful God), the promulgation of the dogma of the Assumption in 1950 by Pope Pius XII; or Humanae Salutis (Human Salvation), by which Pope John XXIII convened the Second Vatican Council in Rev.
