4 GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE June 17, th Sunday in Ordinary Time "This is how it is with the kingdom of God." What is a kingdom? Is it the brick and mortar that build up the castle? Is it the expanse of land a king can reasonably defend? Our notions of kingdoms may be romanticized in the modern era, but for the Israelites, a kingdom held deep historical meaning. Thousands of years before the birth of Christ, the Israelites had asked God for a king. After the reigns of David and Solomon, the united kingdom dissolved into factions, and the land was conquered by the Assyrians, Babylonians, and, finally, Romans. For the Israelites, a kingdom was something to build, both structurally and civilly. While this had ended in ruin for their ancestors, many of Jesus' contemporaries longed for the restoration of an earthly kingdom. Jesus' words in today's Gospel are a radical departure from this perspective. He compares the Kingdom of God to a field, but it appears that the farmer has little to do with its progress. "The seed would sprout and grow, he knows not how. Of its own accord, the land yields fruit." Jesus introduces his followers to a new sort of kingdom, a kingdom where God provides the growth. There is work to be done, of course. "When the grain is ripe, he wields the sickle at once, for the harvest has come." But for the Kingdom of God to flourish, there are certain things that are outside of our control. We sow seeds of kindness, justice, and integrity? and then we must be patient. As shoots of faith appear, we nurture the growth with encouragement. As Christians, our task is not to build the Kingdom of God under our power alone, but to trust in the life-giving movement of God. MEDITACIÓN EVANGÉLICO - ALENTAR ENTENDI- MIENTO MÁS PROFUNDO DE LA ESCRITURA 17 de junio de º Domingo del tiempo ordinario Muchas veces los maestros de las escuelas y los catequistas de las parroquias llevan a cabo la dinámica de invitar a sus alumnos a plantar una semillita de frijol en un pequeño vaso lleno de tierra. Todos los días los niños cuidan y observan cuidadosamente la semilla hasta que brota la planta. Y al verla crecer se llenan de contento. En las lecturas de hoy encontramos algo similar a esta dinámica. Jesús nos asegura que la semilla crece por sí misma con impresionante vitalidad. "Escuchen esta comparación del Reino de Dios. Un hombre esparce la semilla en la tierra, y ya duerma o esté despierto, sea de noche, o de día, la semilla brota y crece, sin que él sepa cómo" (Mc. 4:26). En el Evangelio, Jesús dice palabras que ayudan al corazón de cada persona a crecer sembrando el bien en dondequiera que se encuentre. Las parábolas son una directa invitación a la esperanza, a no perder el ánimo de sembrar a pesar del desaliento que muchas veces afecta a los sembradores. Papás, mamás, maestros, catequistas y, en fin, todos los trabajadores que día a día luchan por una sociedad más justa. Jesús hoy nos reta a todos a dejar el desánimo y seguir evangelizando, dialogando y guiando a nuestros hijos, alumnos, amigos y familia. Aunque parezca que la semilla no da fruto, Dios se encarga de que germine en cada corazón. Cómo sientes que germina la Palabra de Dios en tu vida? Cómo respondes ante el desánimo de seguir esparciendo el bien? La Palabra de Dios nos alienta a ser fieles y tener plena confianza en él. No lo defraudemos, sigamos luchando por la justicia!

5 New St. John T-shirts Available We re excited to announce that our new St. John T-shirts are here. We will be selling the T-shirts after all Masses this weekend. The T-shirts feature our new St. John logo which we announced a few weeks ago, and will be available in 4 different colors. A limited quantity of child and adult sizes will be available in each of the 4 colors. Cost for each T-shirt will be $ We hope you ll pick up one or more for you and your family. Wear them when you re out and start a conversation about who we are and invite those you talk with to come visit us. Faith-Family-Love Parish Fun & Games Night June 19 th Come join us for our Parish Fun & Games Night on Tuesday, June 19th, from 6:30 to 8:00 pm. A variety of games will be held inside the Social Hall and outside on the parish grounds (weather permitting). We ll have bean bag/boards, badminton, ping pong, board games, card games, etc. Feel free to bring your favorite games to share and snacks. This will be a fun event for everyone in the parish; please invite your family and friends to join us as well. Parish Fun & Games Nights will be held every Tuesday through the end of July. We will look to extend these nights as we move further into the year.

6 TREE REMOVAL If you never knew we had a willow tree before, it s too late to catch some shade there this summer. Due to tree being old and rotting, we had the tree removed recently. The cost to remove the tree was $1,400 which was covered by our maintenance fund. Thank you for continuing to support projects such as this. As part of our Outreach Ministry, we have built a relationship with the Sangre De Cristo parish in Guatemala. You may recall that we ve supported their parish s sewing empowerment project by sending buttons and sewing materials over the last several years. We recently heard from Fr. Bill Beuth of Sangre De Cristo on the status of their parish and the people of Guatemala following the recent devastating volcano eruption. As you read Fr. Bill s letter and view the pictures, let us keep the people of Guatemala in our prayers. We will continue to share with you news about the area as we hear more, and for any opportunities where we might be able to help our brothers and sisters in Christ there. Thank you for your loving support. The Fury of Mother Nature in Guatemala El Volcano De Fuego Erupts For the past three days the small Country of Guatemala, C.A. has been living a horrible nightmare. One of thirty two volcanoes, de Fuego, 3,763 meters high erupted on Sunday afternoon, June 3, This was the worst ever seen. Now after 72 hours and tons of volcanic ash plus heavy rain it has been decided to end the search for possible survivors. Entire families were buried by molten lava ash (700 degree F) and 80 bodies have been recovered. There are over two hundred declared missing and many others injured. Every thing has been destroyed in two Departments where 3,271 persons are now living in shelters. Deep suffering and grief are now a national sentiment which has united the Guatemalans in a true spirit of solidarity where everyone is reaching out to help, because it is never too late. Psalm 92:14 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The reign of God comes about because people commit to reversing their lives completely, to embracing new vision, new values. Many popular television shows exploit an unattractive side of human nature by pitting contestants against one another, even to the point of performing dangerous stunts or devious schemes, to gain money or favor. At the liturgy, we counter that impulse by committing ourselves to live generously. In response to Christ s total gift, we offer bread and wine as the emblems of our lives, our hopes, our joys and sorrows. The bread and wine carried to the altar contain our lives, and by offering our lives to God, we prepare to receive the gift of God s own life. We are to become what we receive: the body of Christ. On Sundays, this self giving is often accompanied by a collection and procession of gifts for the poor and money for the upkeep of the parish. There are certainly other methods of collecting money, some perhaps more efficient.
