3 Celebrating the Super Bowl Fr. Karol was joined by several parishioners this past Sunday to watch Super Bowl LII. Congratulations to the Philadelphia Eagles; here s hoping for a better year next year for our Chicago Bears. Thanks to all who came to the rectory for a fun event. GO BEARS!!!! 2018 Statue of Our Lady Visits with St. John Family The Branch Family recently hosted at the their home several friends, family and parishioners from St. John a visitation of Our Lady of Fatima s Pilgrim Virgin Statue. Cathie Branch received a certificate from the America Needs Fatima custodians, who also join the group in praying the Rosary. Thanks to all who attended, and remember to keep Our Lady in your daily prayers.

4 GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE February 11, th Sunday in Ordinary Time We may not like it, but generosity and risk often go hand-in-hand. At least, that's what Jesus shows us in today's Gospel as a leper approaches him for healing. Until the nineteenth century, lepers were shunned to the margins of society for fear of spreading the disease. To touch a leper was to risk becoming unclean yourself. In today's Gospel, Jesus defies convention. "Moved with pity, he reached out his hand, [and] touched him." The leper is healed! But this is not the only risk Jesus takes. Before Jesus heals the man, he knows full well the desperate nature of his situation. Jesus knows that this man will be overjoyed upon being healed and that he just might tell everyone he knows. For a Messiah looking to temporarily fly under the radar, healing this particular leper might not be the best idea. Jesus heals anyway. It can be easy to become calculated in our giving. If I go out of my way to help this person, how will it affect my reputation? How will this charitable donation affect my budget? How could I possibly make time to volunteer regularly? In today's Gospel, Jesus casts these concerns aside. He touches the untouchable. He reaches the unreachable. For his efforts, he receives a betrayal of his request for silence. "The man went away and began to publicize the whole matter." Before long "it was impossible for Jesus to enter a town openly." Jesus is forced to remain "outside in the deserted places." It would appear, perhaps, that he is unable to accomplish his mission. When we take a risk to be generous, things might not follow the prescribed path. We might be disappointed. We also might be surprised! Our witness to radical generosity is attractive to a world in desperate need. Indeed, when Jesus took risks for love, "People kept coming to him from everywhere." MEDITACIÓN EVANGÉLICO - ALENTAR EN- TENDIMIENTO MÁS PROFUNDO DE LA ES- CRITURA (Gospel Meditation) 11 de febrero de º Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario La Palabra de Dios en este Domingo nos enseña el estilo de Jesús para hacer sus milagros prodigiosos. Pero, quizá te preguntas. Cuál era su estilo? Identificarse con los demás. Dice el dicho popular meterse en el zapato del otro", para entender la situación al cien por ciento. Identificarse con los necesitados, con los marginados de su tiempo. En el caso de hoy, el leproso, que si observamos bien, sucede algo curioso se intercambian los papeles. El leproso, por su condición de impuro no podía entrar en la ciudad y al ser curado, Jesús, le ordena no decir nada a nadie hasta ir a presentarse al sacerdote para su purificación. Pero, el papel se invirtió el leproso no obedeció dijo a la gente del pueblo que fue sanado. Por lo tanto ahora Jesús, ya no podía entrar públicamente al pueblo. Se quedo fuera! Lo importante, es, que, en ese tiempo y ahora Jesús sigue expulsado, encontrando, fuera en las periferias a muchos enfermos. La situación llega al punto de ser crucificado fuera de Jerusalén en medio de dos ladrones. Has entendido el estilo de Jesús? Te gustaría intentar a partir de hoy su estilo? Ciertamente, que no podremos curar del todo las diferentes enfermedades de nuestro tiempo. Sin embargo, si podemos tener el poder de acompañar, de orar, de visitar, de tocar con amor a los que sufren, en casa y hospitales. Aún, yendo más lejos, pidamos a Jesús que nos cure a nosotros mismos, para, luego aliviar a los demás. Dios nos conoce hasta el fondo del corazón, dejémonos tocar por él?

5 GETTING TO KNOW..Jim Adduci We recently sat down to talk with Jim Adduci to learn more about him and his involvement here at St. John. You ll be able to read how committed he is to our parish and all that we do and believe in here at St. John. Can you share a bit about your family, where you grew up,? I grew up in Chicago, in the Roseland neighborhood, and attended St. Catherine of Genoa Grammar School, Mendel High School, St. Joseph s College, and DePaul University. I served in the United States Army and have lived in Lansing since I have had a girlfriend since Kathie and I have been married for 48 years. We have two grown children. Our son, James lives in Florida, and our daughter, Leanne and her husband live in Chicago. My wife and I have had good Catholic educations all of our lives and continue to learn. I ve been associated with outreach projects for over fifty years. Projects have ranged from soup kitchen work, sewing centers in the jungle, to church renovations in third world countries. The Outreach Ministry is a new ministry here at St. John. Tell us what the mission of the ministry is and who we will be serving? The Outreach Ministry is a Catholic action ministry. We will provide assistance within Catholic traditions. An important Catholic tradition is supporting the poor and the marginalized. We believe in walking the talk and getting things done. I know service is something you are passionate about. Where did that come from? Who were your mentors as you started on your Outreach journey? Mentors include: the nuns at St. Catherine s; Bishop McNabb (an Augustinian priest); M. Cherif Bassionuni (law professor); Deacon Ed Crowley (St. Vincent DePaul Society); and Fr. Bill Beuth (missionary in Guatemala). I learned from these good people that everyone is created equally but some need help. Our mission is to be of help using our talents. The Holy Spirit speaks to all of us; we need to learn how to listen and act. The Finance ministry is important to St. John. Can you tell us what some of your responsibilities are as the co-chairperson and those of the ministry itself? I am the co-chairman of the Finance Committee, along with Dan Genisio. Working with the committee has been a wonderful experience. We work with Fr. Karol focusing on the budget and using our financial resources for the good of the parish. This parish is a well-run and efficient organization. How are we doing financially? We re doing well. Our parish is a generous community. A good example of this is the To Teach Who Christ Is campaign. People give generously. The Cuba Initiative is another example of our great generosity. People respond when the mission is righteous. What makes you proud of our parish here at St. John? If we were going to give a State of the Union address for our parish, I would begin by stating our parish is strong. It is strong because of our diversity, our activities, our sense of community and our generosity. Our church is viewed as a big tent. As the song goes, all are welcome in this place. You and Kathie love to travel. Where are some of your favorite travel destinations, and where have you yet to travel to - what s on your bucket list? Some favorites are European capitals and cities, the American South, Alaska and the Colorado Rockies. On our bucket list is the Canadian Yukon, the Arctic Circle and participating in Masses with Fr. Karol in Europe. Share with us something that our parishioners might find surprising about you. I am and have been a beach bum since 1965, and a life-long fan of Jimmy Buffett and David Pengelly. So, next time you talk with Jim, maybe ask him about some of those outreach missions he s been blessed to be part of. He just might find a way to get you involved and you ll be grateful for it. 6 St. John Lenten Food Drive Food donations will be accepted beginning Ash Wednesday, February 14th and throughout the season of Lent. Monetary donations are appreciated as well. The Monies are used to purchase fresh produce, meats and dairy products. A basket with eggs will be in the vestibule throughout Lent. Inside the egg you will find the name of a food item for the family baskets. Take an egg, buy the item, return the food and the egg to the Social Hall. We will gladly print a copy out for you and you may either pick it up during office hours or we will mail it out to you. THE HARBOUR EMPOWERING YOUTH, DEVELOPING FUTURE ( St. John s Youth Squad is helping THE HARBOUR, a home for homeless girls, women in our area who are 15 years old and up. Through out the month of February, we are looking to collect the following items: HAIR BRUSHES, COMBS, HAIR TIES, TOOTH PASTE, TOOTH BRUSHES, BARS OF SOAP, WASH CLOTHS, TOWELS, PILLOWCASES, SHEETS SETS (TWIN), GLOVES, HATS, SCARVES, SOCKS (ANY KIND), LARGE OR PLUS-SIZE COATS Look for the collection box in the vestibule of Church. THE YOUTH SQUAD THANKS YOU The packet of envelopes we receive each month has a yellow envelope labeled Building Maintenance. Monetary donations placed in this envelope are used only for maintaining our Church building. It is not ever used for salaries. We will have a second collection for the Building Maintenance fund the first Sunday of each month. Thank you for your continued support of our parish. As usual, most of us have made resolutions for the New Year. Perhaps you have decided to be more careful in taking care of your health: dieting, exercising, walking instead of driving, etc. Perhaps you have decided to be more charitable towards others, not just in your family but others you come in contact with. Perhaps you might be thinking about being more active in our Parish. We are currently in need of Altar Servers, both adults and teenagers, and Eucharistic ministers. WHY DO WE DO THAT? - CATHOLIC LIFE EXPLAINED Question: Why do we place ashes on our forehead each Ash Wednesday? Answer: Ashes are rich in spiritual symbolism. We recall in the second chapter of Genesis, when the human person is fashioned "out of the dust of the ground" and receives the breath of life (Genesis 2:7). In death, a person returns to the ground from which we came. The ancient Hebrews used ashes as a sign of repentance, reminding themselves that God is God and we are not. As the priest or minister places ashes on our forhead, we hear either remember that you are dust and unto dust you shall return" or "turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel." When we receive ashes, we remember our own mortality. We're reminded that we have limited time on this earth and we ought to make the best use of it that we can! People are in need of love, care, and compassion. We all need to continually rediscover the love of God. The Gospel invites every person in every stage of life to encounter and imitate Jesus here and now. The forty days of Lent are the perfect time to assess our own awareness of these realities.
