Dear Parishioners of St John, As we celebrate Labor Day Weekend, I would like to take the time to thank all who work hard for the betterment of our society, our families and our church. Whatever task we perform let s do so for the glory of God. Let the work we do become a prayer and a means to grow in holiness. Have a blessed Labor Day Weekend! I would like to thank all of our volunteers who share their talents and time here at St. John s. Know that I truly appreciate your dedicated work. So many of you are part of various ministries and organizations at our parish. Thanks to all who help with our liturgies and events, those who help with church decorating, gardening, and maintenance, those who visit the sick and teach others about our faith. I am also grateful for those who help around the church office and rectory. For all the tasks you perform I am grateful! It is our church and if anyone would like to help in any shape or form please share your desires with me or those in leadership of our parish and we will steer you in the right direction. This weekend we say farewell to Fr. Lukasz. It was wonderful to have him around, and see his energy and enthusiasm at work. Let s continue to keep him in our thoughts and prayers as we look foreword to hearing of his achievements in his missionary work in Cuba. Below are a few moments we were able to capture during his stay at St. John s. God bless, Fr. Karol

GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEP- ER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE September 2, nd Sunday in Ordinary Time Judgment tends to have a bad reputation. We often associate it with condemnation, and in the Gospels, we associate it with the Pharisees. Today's Gospel features the Pharisees doing exactly what we expect. "They observed that some of his disciples ate their meals with unclean, that is, unwashed, hands." The Jewish people had strict purification laws that applied to all areas of life. The Pharisees attempt to accuse Jesus of not following the ancestral traditions. Jesus doesn't take offense at their judgments per se. He instead points out the hypocrisy of their words. "You hypocrites? this people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me." From there, Jesus turns his attention to the concerns of the heart. "The things that come from within are what defile." He lists off a number of sins, including some the Pharisees were likely struggling with, including evil thoughts, envy, and arrogance. When we examine the list, perhaps we're reminded of our own trips to the confessional! As we strive to follow Jesus and live with integrity, we must be aware of our hearts. We must judge our own actions. Are they leading us closer to God or away from Him? Are we growing in love of our neighbor, or are we becoming more closed in on ourselves? As we move into this week, consider the state of our own heart. Perhaps you are overly scrupulous in less important areas. Perhaps there are large areas of overlooked sin that you've excused for too long. Whatever it is, the judgment of God need not cripple us. He offers us a share in His mercy as soon as we turn to Him. This week, allow your heart to be transformed!

On Monday, August 20th, the Symbols of World Youth Days arrived at Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago. From 6 am to 7 pm, many of the faithful participated in celebrations organized during the visit. Also, a delegation from our parish participated in the prayer vigil, adoration, rosary prayer and the noontime Holy Mass. The World Youth Day Cross and the icon of Our Lady Salus Populi Romani were entrusted to the youth by St. John Paul II in Since then, periphery around the world watch over the Symbols. The Cross and the icon of the Mother of God have been presented on all continents, also in countries experienced by wars and conflicts. Young people carry the Symbols both to sanctuaries and places of religious events, as well as to places where the testimony of faith is needed on a daily basis. They prayed for them at the site of the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and in Rwanda struggling with the consequences of the bloody civil war. The Cross and the Icon visited the UN headquarters, but also small schools, hospitals and prisons. The Peregrination of the Holy Symbols of World Youth Days is the announcement of the next World Youth Days, which will be held in Panama on January 22-27, From Fr. Lukasz: I have met with the World Youth Day symbols from the first in 2000 in Rome to the recent one here in Chicago. Each meeting is an exceptional event. For me, this last meeting in the Cathedral is, above all, a prayer for the parishes of St. John in Glenwood, especially for the youth. It was also a memory of the periphery of the world days in my parish in Sanok and the memory of the Papal Mass in Krakow, during which I made the personal decision to leave for the

Fr. Karol and Jim Adduci s mission to Haiti AMAZING EXPERIENCE IN HAITI On their recent trip to Haiti, Fr. Karol and Jim Adduci met with Fr. Etienne and experienced first-hand the great work that he is doing in the parish of St. Cecile. And, thanks to your generous spirit, they were able to deliver over 200 pounds of school supplies to Fr. Etienne. The first group of students at St. Cecile, all first graders, will begin classes next month. Fr. Karol was able to celebrate Mass with Fr. Etienne while on this visit. Daily Mass is at 6am, with parishioners walking to the church - some for miles and some shoeless, but all dressed in their finest church attire. Their celebration is very spirited, led by a 12-year young lady. The people of Haiti may be poor economically, but they are exceptionally rich in spirit. After such a long journey to get to Mass, it was no surprise that the parishioners stayed after Mass for fellowship. In this way, we are not so different from our brethren in Haiti. While in Haiti, Fr. Karol and Jim drove with Fr Etienne to several different villages and churches, and talked about how he can plan to build out St. Cecile to accommodate more school children in the future. They see the value in what Fr. Etienne is doing in Haiti, especially since they have been without a pastor/minister there for some time. Fr. Karol and Jim will be sharing more about their experiences of this recent trip to Haiti at a presentation to be scheduled in the near future. We hope that you'll join them to hear more about the amazing people of Haiti and the great work that Fr. Etienne is doing there.

THE YOUTH SQUAD IS LOOKING TO PLANT SOME TREES The Youth Group is looking for anyone who would be interested in donating a tree in memory of a loved one. The Book of Genesis prompts more questions than it answers. Join us starting Tuesday, September 4 th, to ask questions and to seek answers as we study Genesis. Sign-up continues through September 2nd. Deacon Jim THE YOUTH GROUP WILL GATHER SHIRTS Looking for men and women s shirts; new or slightly used. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION When an altar is dedicated, the Rite of Dedicaton directs that, if possible, the relics of a martyr be mortared into the church floor under the mensa, or altar table. Up until this revised rite, the general practice was to include small relics of saints in an altar stone, a slab of marble that was normally set in the altar itself. Today s rite states a clear preference for martyr, and for a substantial part of the body, in accord with our tradition s desire for substantial symbols. Martyr, of course, means witness in Greek, and was the title given early on to the people who by their death imaged the death of Christ. From the beginning, there has never been a shortage of such people, although it took a while for the Church to develop a process to declare someone a martyr. Saint Augustine tells how it was done in the fifth century. By then, popular opinion didn t count as much as an official tribunal set up by the bishop of the place where the martyr suffered. After the inquiry established that the person did indeed die for the faith, a metropolitan bishop had to ratify the decision before a shrine could be built or an altar set up over the martyr s tomb. For the most part, the honor paid to a martyr (called a cult ) was restricted to that diocese, although the fame of some heroes spread so much that they were celebrated elsewhere. The age of the martyrs is now, and more people died for the faith in the twentieth century than ever before, witnessing to Christ to the end. Their sacrifice remains the seed of the Church. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
