3 Dear St. John Parishioners, Last weekend you learned that our parish is in a grouping with St. Ann s in Lansing and St. James in Sauk Village. Renew My Church is an important process for our archdiocese and all parishes are asked to participate. The schedule of when each grouping will start the planning process will be determined in the future. Our grouping covers the very southeast corner of our archdiocese. In the weeks and months to come feel free to offer me your ideas on this matter. I would like to open the doors of my rectory for The Super Bowl Game on Sunday, February 5 starting at 4:30PM. If you don t have any plans and would like to join me to watch the game please let me know by Thursday, February 2nd so I can make proper arrangements. Thank you to The Women s Club for raffling the Super Bowl party trays. I hope I win one so I ll be able to share it with you!! If you are not doing so, consider becoming one of our Altar Servers, Eucharistic Ministers or Lector. Please call the parish office so we can arrange for the proper training for you. As we listen to the gospel this weekend we see Jesus with His Disciples at the Mountain of Beatitudes reminding them and us that we are blessed. May we continue to be a blessing to all people God places in our lives. By doing so we will be able to rejoice and be glad, for our reward will be great in heaven. I hope you had the time to read some chapters of this inspirational book, and be able to share your reflections with the group. From Dynamic Catholic: In 2008 we had a crazy idea: pass out books at Christmas Masses as a way to re-engage disengaged Catholics. We have offered some great books over the last nine years through the Dynamic Catholic Book Program, and thousands of people have come back to church as a result. But it s not just about passing out any book or CD. Giving people the right book at the right time can be life changing. Resisting Happiness is that book. It was written to specifically re-engage disengaged Catholics and to increase engagement among those who are at church each week but don t really get it. It is light and inviting there is nothing deeply religious about the cover or the table of contents. The short chapters were designed for busy people. And resistance plays a powerful role in each of our lives every day. In a deeply personal way, Matthew Kelly s new book helps readers discover that only by unmasking resistance and defeating it in their own lives can they really experience the happiness God created them to experience.

5 LATE NITE CATECHISM Mardi Gras Party Luncheon Presented by H-F Park District 55+ Purple, Green, and Gold it s Mardi Gras Party! Join us on Monday, February 27, from Noon 2 pm at the Irwin Community Center, Ridge Road and Highland Ave. Homewood. Lunch of chicken and kielbasa jambalaya, Creole cabbage, fresh baked corn bread, with bread pudding and caramel sauce for dessert is catered by Wiley s Grill. We will have entertainment by the Don and Sandy Duo, raffle, and door prizes. Come celebrate this age old tradition. Register by Noon of Thursday, February 23, either at the Community Center or by calling Fee $11 for both R/NR On Saturday, February 18, 2017 our Young Adult Ministry Group will help Habitat for The Women s Club will attend 8:00 Mass in a group Humanity on a home building project. In urban America, at least in cities with a significant Catholic population, Holy Thursday was about veneration of the Blessed Sacrament. People were encouraged to walk to seven churches for a visit to each parish s repository, a kind of temporary tabernacle on a side altar, closer in proximity to the faithful than the usual tabernacle on the distant high altar. On Good Friday, the most popular form of devotion was the Stations of the Cross, or a three-hour program of word and preaching beginning at noon. The Holy Thursday seven-church hike was a way of participating in a custom of the city of Rome. Traditionally, each day in Lent was assigned to a particular parish church or basilica in the city. Each week of Lent thus had seven churches, and pious people tried to get to each one of them. The pilgrimage was a symbol of unity and also the journey of faith. Originally, the pope would go to each place for a liturgy, but political strife removed the pope from Rome in With the papacy relocated in France, the custom ceased until Pope Leo XIII expressed interest in restoring it in 1900, and Blessed John XXIII fully restored the custom in By the time Pope Leo began to revive the custom, many American cities had enough parishes and monasteries that the faithful could vicariously participate in the revived tradition of stational liturgies by a very long walk!
