3 Dear Parishioners of St. John Parish, As you were able to notice these past weeks we have been busy with various construction projects. Starting with the rectory garden and also the garden area by the statue of St. Francis. As I am writing this article I am still in the process of scheduling the installation of the new entrance doors of our church and the dates for seal coating and striping of our parking lots. Also the work will start on our roof shortly. I might need a beer after all these projects are completed. Speaking of beer, I would like to invite young adults to join me for the Theology on Tap ages 21 to 35. Please read below for the details. I am looking forward to a game of ping pong as part of our Fellowship Game Nights. The first night is scheduled for June 12. This coming Saturday we will enjoy our First Car Show and Yard Sale. Karol Breakthrough: The Inspiring Story of Australia s X Factor Priest Father Rob Galea Join us for the Theology on Tap June 25, 2018 kickoff event with Father Tom Rosica, Chief Executive Officer of Salt and Light Catholic Media Foundation in Canada. Father Rosica will interview Father Rob Galea, musician, author, and founder of FRG Ministry. Father Rob will speak about his inspiring journey from troubled teen to Catholic priest and Australian idol. He will also be performing some of his music that made him an internet sensation in 2015 thanks to his audition for Australia s X Factor. The event is free and every attendee will receive two drink tickets, appetizers, and excellent company! To register, please visit To Rise With Christ Instruction on Burial Rites Involving Ashes / Cremated Remains of the Deceased Recently, the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith has issued an Instruction, To Rise With Christ, on the burial rites involving ashes / cremated remains of the deceased. Specifically, To Rise With Christ is addressing practices in society which have grown in popularity in recent years in regard to the care of cremated remains after death: the separation or scattering of ashes, the retaining or display of ashes in one s home, or the use of ashes in the creation of jewelry. In all of these cases the Instruction reiterates the Church s firm belief in the respectful care of ashes / cremated remains of the departed, such that the ashes of the faithful must be laid to rest in a sacred place, that is, in a cemetery or, in certain cases, in a church or an area, which has been set aside for this purpose.

4 GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UN- DERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE June 10, th Sunday in Ordinary Time Have you ever felt judged by your family? St. John Paul II noted that the family "is the cradle of life and love" (On the Lay Members of Christ's Faithful, 40). Yet unmet expectations and divergent priorities can cause tension in even the most loving family situations. This is true for us, and it was true for Jesus! In today's Gospel, Jesus has returned home to Nazareth. A large crowd gathered, and Jesus finds himself facing stiff opposition from his family. This was likely Jesus' large, extended family. The Semitic language has no specific words for extended relatives, so everyone is "brother" or "sister." The entire clan has gotten wind of Jesus' preaching, and they are not amused. "They set out to seize him, for they said, 'He is out of his mind.'" To make matters worse, the religious authorities even accuse Jesus of being possessed by a demon. It's a mess by any standards. The family's perspective is perhaps understandable. In Jewish culture, teachers and scribes underwent intensive schooling and apprenticeships, none of which Jesus had done. The family knew Jesus the carpenter, not Jesus the rabbi. For them, Jesus' bold preaching threatened the reputation of their family! Jesus' words to his family can seem controversial. "Who are my mother and my brothers?" Yet Jesus knows what he is about. He has always known he would be about the business of his Heavenly Father. And what is that business? It is the business of the new covenant and the Kingdom of God. In this Kingdom, we are all adopted sons and daughters of the King. Jesus begins, even now, to expand the perspective of his listeners. Being welcomed into this family does not depend on our families of birth or ethnic origin, but a wholehearted commitment to "do the will of God." MEDITACIÓN EVANGÉLICO - ALENTAR ENTENDI- MIENTO MÁS PROFUNDO DE LA ESCRITURA 10 de junio de º Domingo del tiempo ordinario En los tiempos de Jesús, y en el nuestro, existe la tendencia a la oposición de la misericordia de Dios por medio de su Hijo, a causa de la existencia del pecado. Nuestra actitud debe tener un carácter de lucha urgente contra el mal que nos abruma y, aunque parece que estamos rodeados de maldad, la confianza y la esperanza en Cristo que ha vencido el mal debe ser más fuerte para el que tiene fe. En las lecturas vemos cómo algunas personas critican a Jesús. Sus parientes lo llamaban loco, los maestros de la ley decían que estaba poseído por Belcebú. La paciencia de Jesús ante estos comentarios es admirable. Pide a sus seguidores que se acerquen y comienza a cuestionarlos con la siguiente pregunta: " Cómo puede Satanás echar a Satanás? Si una nación está dividida en bandos, no puede durar. Tampoco una familia dividida puede mantenerse (Mc. 3:24-26). Qué mensaje nos quiere dar Dios en las lecturas de este domingo? Cómo confrontamos el mal que nos rodea? Seguramente, no se trata solo de escuchar y salir de la Eucaristía diciendo: "qué bonito habló el padre". Se trata de comprender y actuar conforme al mensaje. Sabemos que la sociedad muchas veces es ciega para distinguir el bien del mal. Ya no existe la conciencia del pecado; todo lo vemos normal. Especialmente, quitar la vida al ser humano, como lo vemos en las noticias de todos los días. Jesús ofrece librarnos del mal, y debemos aprovechar sus enseñanzas para vivir de acuerdo con la verdadera familia de Jesús, es decir, los que acogen su palabra y la ponen en práctica.

We will be selling the T- shirts after all Masses the weekend of June The T-shirts feature our new St. John logo which we announced a few weeks ago, and will be available in 4 different colors. A limited quantity of child and adult sizes will be available in each of the 4 colors. Cost for each T-shirt will be $10. We hope you ll pick up one or more for you and your family. Wear them when you re out and start a conversation about who we are and invite those you talk with to come visit us. Faith-Family-Love Parish Fun & Games Night June 12 th Come join us for our first Parish Fun & Games Night on Tuesday, June 12th, from 6:30 to 8:00 pm. A variety of games will be held inside the Social Hall and outside on the parish grounds (weather permitting). We ll have bean bag/boards, badminton, ping pong, board games, card games, etc. Feel free to bring your favorite games to share and snacks. This will be a fun event for everyone in the parish; please invite your family and friends to join us as well. Parish Fun & Games Nights will be held every Tuesday through the end of August. We will look to extend these nights as we move further into the year.

Psalm 130:1 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The cathedral is a treasure in a diocese and in our tradition. It is not simply a big church, as some say; some parish churches are larger. What makes a cathedral is the presence of the chair, called a cathedra (Latin for seat) reserved for the bishop. There are many instances in our country of a local church (diocese) outgrowing a cathedral. In Baltimore and St. Louis, the former cathedrals are historic treasures in the heart of the old city, but new and larger structures now function as the seat of the bishop. When a bishop dies or retires, it is said that the seat is vacant, and when the new bishop is installed, the central ritual is the moment when the decree of the Holy Father is read and the new bishop is escorted to the cathedra. No one but the bishop sits in the cathedra during a ritual, but in Los Angeles the cathedra in the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels is accessible, and no one seems to mind when a visitor tries the cathedra out for the bishop s point of view.
