Dear Parishioners of St. John, I would like to thank all of you for your financial support of this Annual Catholic Appeal. Our goal for this year is $12, If our contributions exceed the parish goal, St. John will receive a rebate of 100% of the funds donated over the goal. The following students received the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time on Saturday, January 27th at 10:00 AM Mass. Damian Cerda Jencarlos Cruz Ryker Kotecki Alexis Pizana Jesus Salazar Albert Cruz Jairo Duenas Isabella Mendez Diego Ramirez Please keep them and their families in your prayers, as they continue to prepare to receive Our Lord for the first time in Holy Communion on April 29th at the 10:00 AM Mass. Father Karol This weekend, our parish will be conducting the Annual Catholic Appeal in-pew Commitment Weekend. Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in installments. The ACA theme, Come, Follow Me was selected to remind us to continue to answer Jesus call and services to share God s love with many others in our Parish and our Archdiocese. Each pledge makes a difference because all Parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response.

GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE February 4, th Sunday in Ordinary Time For most of us, the dynamic between prayer and action is imperfect. Breakfast needs to be made and the kids dressed. Work demands our energy and additional responsibilities fill our evenings and weekends. Then there's the football game or a new TV series to stream. After all, don't we need to relax? We're all busy. But just imagine Jesus' situation in today's Gospel. He heals Peter's mother-in-law, drives out demons, and cures diseases late into the night. With very little sleep, he arises before dawn to capture some peace and quiet, only to find "those who were with him pursued him." How often do we feel pursued by the harried commitments, even when we try to seek rest? Perhaps we can learn something from the response of Jesus. Jesus models two key things: the essential nature of prayer and the essential call of vocation. "He went off to a deserted place, where he prayed." Despite inevitable exhaustion, Jesus prioritizes time with the Father. We might not have easy access to deserts and mountaintops, but today's Gospel challenges us to take intentional time set apart for God. We can designate a "prayer chair" in a corner of our home or leave a little earlier to pick our children up from school so we can snatch time in a nearby chapel. We can pray the rosary on our commute or take the dog for a long walk in silence. However, when the Apostles arrive, Jesus doesn't linger overlong in the deserted place or make an excuse for why he can't return with his friends. Jesus is true to his calling. He continues on in his state of life, serving the people nearest to him. Like Jesus, we are invited to set intentional time for communion with God so that we can be refreshed and empowered for our communion with others.

GETTING TO KNOW..ORA ADAMS You may run into Ora at any Mass, 5, 8 or 10:00, but when it s 10 you will find her getting on her robe and joining the choir group to sing for us that morning! What inspired you to become a parishioner here at St. John Church? I attended Mass at several churches over the years, you can say that I church hopped. Fr. Peter was an inspiration to me when he came to our parish. He was a teacher and a scholar that challenged us to think and to reflect upon the gospels. He became part of my spiritual path. You have become involved in many ministries and activities in a relatively short amount of time; what has been your inspiration to become active and involved? I pray, and my prayer is asking for our Lord s direction. I ask how He wants me to best serve Him. Then I go where I think I can be helpful or of assistance. I try to see the Christ in everyone and let them see the Christ in me! I hope my conduct will radiate the Christ in me to others. Also, I have a positive yes you can attitude which is motivating. At this time of my life, the winter season, it is important to do as much as I can now. I continue to pray for God to give me the grace to continue to have a positive can do attitude. What is it like to be part of the choir? I resisted at first, but others encouraged me to join. I asked God to give me a voice. The hardest part was giving up my hats for church, but it is worth it. I really enjoy it! Each and every Sunday when I walk into church I see Rocky and Margo and I get to greet them; Margo always has a joke for me! Another couple that I love to see is Joe and Mary Rose, who always welcome me so warmly. With so many friends at church, you feel their love, they welcome me openly. Andy is such an inspiration to work with and inspiring too; he leads us in prayer before and after each practice. Sometimes I don t feel like coming to church for practice, especially in the bad weather but realize that he always comes and drives from farther away than I do. As a parish council member with an overall view of our parish, how do you see us today and in the future? Our parish has great potential for growth between the youth and we seasoned Catholics. The youth Masses are encouraging and positive to see. We parishioners are reaching for specific goals: loving one another like family and ministering to one another. As parish council members, we are communicating with St. John family with ideas and how to implement those ideas for renewal and growth. I love that we are doing more for youth events and meshing old and young alike in our parish. Who are some of your role models? My mom was a role model. And when I look around and see different women doing positive and wonderful things in our parish and community, I feel their spirits. They seem to lift you up and give you strength. What kind of work have you done? I was a social worker and worked in downtown Chicago for most of my career. Even though I am so called retired, I am still working, applying my life skills in many ways. I enjoy the ministry work here at church and am a Friend of the Glenwood Lynwood Library working with the children s programs. I go to Prairie State for a credit class and exercise program; it helps me to stay healthy mentally and physically. I volunteer at Grand Prairie with Joan Whitman. Whatever we do in life there is problem solving, and I ve learned to help others solve theirs on their own. Sometimes there is a resistance in each of us, and I ve also learned that God tells us what to do, as caring and compassionate people. Tell us about your family! I am the mother of three and grandmother of two, a nineteen-year-old and five-year-old. My son is an engineer and one daughter is a social worker and the other a chef. They all live out of town and have their own independent lives. They are all blessed with good lives. In the near future, I will be going to Israel to see the Holy Land with my son and am really looking forward to that. What are you reading lately? The book Fr. Bill Stenzel recommended The Man Nobody Knows by Bruce Barton; it s wonderful. You impress me as a strong and thoughtful woman of faith, a role model in our parish. What would you like to share with our youth regarding living a life of faith in today s world? Pay attention to the Word of God (good advice for all of us). Remember your parents were children once, so they know many things; listen to what they have to say. Older people have been there and done that, so children can learn a lot from their parents. And parents can learn from their children too. Little kids are so fascinating, so beautiful, so magical with their innocence. I enjoy the Masses with the children, and when Fr. Karol brings the kids to the altar stairs to sit and talk. We can each learn a lot from our kids, just watching them. We can learn a lot from watching you too Ora, if we can keep up with you that is! You are a treasure in our parish, and we are so blessed to walk the same spiritual path together.

Our Washington, D.C. and March for Life reflections What a beautiful expression of love - Love Saves Lives, as the March for Life theme so aptly puts it. This year s March for Life, the 45th annual, was attended by an estimated 100,000 who came together in our nation s capital to support the right for life (from conception to natural death). Fr. Karol was accompanied by Nancy Galbreath, Serena Hewitt, Rick Whitman and Ginny Williamson to march and show support for such an important issue for all of us. In addition to the March for Life, the group from St. John also spent time at Arlington Cemetery, the Pentagon, the new Museum of the Bible and the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. The group shared their experiences in the pictures and their comments below. Please talk with any of those who attended to learn more, and about ideas for next year s March for Life in Chicago. And please keep all those impacted by this cause in your prayers. As we walked where so many men and women are laid to rest who gave their lives for us, I was so touched by the quiet. The quiet of respect. I felt honored to be there. We saw heroes and prayed for those who fought for us. We saw the youth of our Faith pray together, march for their beliefs, and stand for their rights. People of all generations and faith and heritage come together peacefully to practice the rights that those heroes we prayed for gave us. I was amazed by the beauty of the Basilica and the peacefulness we felt on our visit the first day. Then to see the Basilica completely filled with all those there for the vigil Mass for the March for Life was beyond words. Young, old, from every part of the country, coming together, to pray together. It was beautiful. I ve been to DC once before. I d seen some of the city, the history, the monuments and the museums; but the impact and the impression from being at such a meaningful event is so much deeper than a sight seeing tour. It feels like the country is still working as it should and the people s voices are being heard. Our political machine may be broken in many ways and politics and politicians may make people cringe but citizens are still passionate and are still trying to do what s right in large numbers, Good for America. Thank you Father Karol for the opportunities and the friendship you are bringing to our parish.

TIRELESS DISCIPLESHIP The stories we ve been hearing these weeks come from the very first chapter of Mark, and they show us the public ministry of Jesus in its infancy. Today s account shows some of the strain or adjustment of his new life of preaching the reign of God, healing the sick, and casting out demons. Notice that after sunset, when darkness ended the workday, people brought the sick and possessed to Jesus. The following day he rose before dawn to get away by himself to pray, but to no avail. Simon Peter and the others don t just look for him, they pursue him, filled with the fervor that his ministry has incited. With the self-sacrificing example he gave until the end of his earthly life, he tells his followers that this is his whole purpose. Through Mark, he is also telling the early church, and he is telling us, that this is our purpose, our vocation: to be tireless in our pursuit of proclaiming the Good News, and in bringing the healing, reconciling touch of Christ to the world. What was Corinth like? It had a beautiful setting on an isthmus, about fifty miles from Athens. The location makes for very easy exchange by sea routes between Greece and Italy, a factor in its economic success even today. In Paul s day it was a cosmopolitan and wealthy city with inhabitants drawn from all over the world, including a sizeable Jewish community. When Paul arrived about the year 50, the city was only about a century old, but already five times the size of Athens. Paul lived in Corinth for a year and a half, and a few years later came back for three months. The community of Christians there struggled against the influence of a very secular and self-indulgent society that was blind to the plight of the poor. Pagan attitudes afflicted the community, which had a way of breaking Paul s heart; he wrote to them sometimes with many tears (2 Corinthians 2:4). Today, Corinth is a small industrial city. Its historic core has been destroyed by a series of earthquakes over the centuries, and what little remained was totally obliterated in a war with Turkey in the 1820s. There s a core city with glamorous shops to catch the tourists, but it is mainly a cargo port, with piles of marble, tiles, and minerals everywhere, a huge oil refinery nearby, a busy canal, a modern fast rail line to Athens, and a meeting point of major highways. Today, the remains of the Temple of Apollo and the marketplace are more ruined than most such sites. The glory of the city Paul knew well has faded, but the relevance of his words shines through the centuries. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
