1 Ss PETER & PAUL February 11, 2018 Come. Pray. Belong. This Valentine's Day recognize true love... Ash Wednesday Wednesday, February 14 Mass at 7:00 am 12:10 pm 7:00 pm Prayer Service with Ashes 3:30 pm 5:30 pm

2 Ss Peter & Paul My Dear Parishioners, Lent begins this Week with Ash Wednesday, February 14. How fitting to have it begin on Saint Valentine's Day, a Day on which our part of the World sets aside for celebrating and appreciating the Loves of our Lives! It is so fitting because all of that which Lent reminds us, and to which it brings us, is totally out of Love - God's Love for us. May it always beg the reflection of our hearts and minds: how much do we love and show our love to God? The Church presents Lent to us as having a twofold character: a time when we recall (or, in the joyful cases of the RCIA Candidates, prepare for) our Baptism in Christ, which gifts us with Salvation through Him; and a time of repentance and penance - our acts out of our Love for God and others. I pray you will take full advantage of this Holy Season and find for yourselves time to remember and reflect, moving your hearts, once again, to be at peace and live in joy for all that you are - chosen by Christ - and all that you are promised, in being in reconciliation and right-relationship with the Lord. Please take note and participate in the various Lenten Liturgies and Devotions available here at our Parish (Mass, Stations of the Cross, Choral Stations of the Cross presented by our Children, the Liturgies of Holy Week and the Triduum, etc.), and at other places for which it may be convenient for you. Commit to some form of daily regimen of prayer and reflection. And, please remember our Parish and me in your prayers, as we all continue on our journey towards Easter. Prayerfully yours in Christ, Father Michael Rev. Msgr. Michael A. Andreano, Pastor 1. The days of both Fast and Abstinence during Lent are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the "paschal fast" to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily His Resurrection. The other Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence. On a day of Fast, only one (1) full meal is permitted, and two (2) smaller meals, which, if added together, would not exceed the main meal in quantity. Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast. On a day of Abstinence, no meat may be eaten LENTEN REGULATIONS Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the law of abstinence. 2. The obligation to observe the laws of Fast and Abstinence "substantially", or as a whole, is a serious obligation. 3. The Fridays of the year, outside of Lent, are designated as days of penance, but each individual may substitute for the traditional abstinence from meat some other practice of voluntary self-denial as penance. 4. The time for fulfilling the Paschal Precept (Easter Duty*) extends from the First Sunday of Lent, February 18, 2018 to The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, May 27, *Canon 920, 1. All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year. All are invited to enjoy a simple LENTEN LUNCH after the 12:10 pm mass every Friday in Lent 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm in the Waterfront Room Join Us! Walking with Purpose Six-week Women's Bible Study to be held at Ss Peter & Paul Tuesdays during Lent. 3 Ss Peter & Paul Holy Thursday Volunteers needed! We are accepting volunteers to have their feet washed during the Mass of Our Lord's Supper at 7:00pm on Holy Thursday, March 29. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Nick Leeper at spphoboken.com The Ministry of the Lector and Eucharistic Minister Calling all parishioners! We are in need of some additional volunteers to serve as Lectors and Eucharistic Ministers. We are also preparing for the Easter liturgies which require some extra participants. This is a great way to become a steward of your time and talent for the parish if you already attend mass and you are looking for easy ways to get involved. Simple training takes place prior to serving at a liturgy and you will be scheduled based on availability. If you would be willing to give of your time, please contact Mark Petrovich at mup101@gmail.com, our coordinator for volunteer lectors and eucharistic ministers, or our Director of Music, Brian Walters at brian.walters@spphoboken.com Call for Altar Servers Is your child being called to become an Altar Server? The Altar Server Ministry is a very special group of young people in our parish who have answered God s call to ministry. The altar server helps the priest celebrate the Mass for the congregation. It is important for servers to assist the priests so that they may focus more on the celebration. An altar server must commit 1 Hour on Sunday or Saturday Evening. For more information, contact Nick Leeper at nick.leeper@spphoboken.com

4 Ss Peter & Paul Since some of you who attended, and some who could not attend, Msgr. Michael's Installation Mass on January 28 have asked for a copy of the Comments he made at the end of Mass, they are provided here: Installation Mass Comments Sunday, January 28, 2018 Noon Mass Thank you all for being here, and for joining in praise and thanksgiving to Almighty God, who created each and every one of us, each of us equally loved in His eyes, no matter who we are or from where we came. May all of us within and outside of these Holy Walls see and love each other through the same vision that is God s. First and foremost, I thank Cardinal Tobin for being here. As many of you know, I lived at our Cathedral Basilica in Newark for the past 15 years, the last year of which, since his arrival to Newark, the Cardinal and I lived together, along with Bishop Cruz, the Rector of our Cathedral (who I thank for being here, too). In assigning me here, the Cardinal has caused the resurgence of a great peace for my Life, for which I am very grateful. In his kindness, he has allowed me to come back home to Hoboken, my hometown, the City in which I was born. I look out the windows of the Rectory, and go out the doors of the Church, and see my entire Life, from childhood to now. I walk the Avenue Washington Street and see myself walking as a little boy, hand-in-hand with my parents, God rest them, who taught me to love and appreciate all around us. As if I could not be any more honored by all of your and the Cardinal s presence among us, I am so very touched and honored by the presence and prayers of our new Mayor, Ravi Bhalla, here with his Family his wife and children. Thank you, Mr. Mayor, for being here. Know that you have my support, respect, and prayers, and that you and your Family are always welcome here, in this Holy House of God. Monsignor Tom Nydegger, our Vicar General & Moderator of the Curia, and Monsignor Ron Rozniak, my first Pastor, who is yet the Pastor at our Parish of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Ridgewood, have blessed me for many years with their support and presence. Anything that I may do right as a Pastor, would be due to the example of prayerfulness and selflessness of Monsignor Rozniak. In so many ways, his quiet, caring actions and interactions for and among God s People, have provided a road on which I yet strive to walk as a Priest. I thank Monsignor Meyer, my predecessor here as Pastor, who left me with a wonderfully organized place in so many ways, but the greatest gift being the Parish Staff who are with me here each Day. I am grateful for my other brother Priests who could be here, especially those who assist me when they can with the Mass and Sacramental schedule Fr. David, and Msgrs. Neil and Chris; our dear Sisters Symphorosa and Veronica who do so much here quietly, joyfully, much of it behind the scenes, all for their love of the Lord Jesus and this Parish; our Parish Altar Servers, along with some of our

5 Ss Peter & Paul Seminarian, Cathedral Servers and MC staff, and the Parish Lectors, Ushers, and magnificent Music Ministry, under the direction of Brian Walters, with whom we are newly-blessed. It is with deep gratitude that I thank Father Mancini, in charge of our Archdiocesan Ceremonies and Ms. Joan Conroy of our Worship Office, and Father Jason Makarow, my successor as the Cardinal s Priest-Secretary, as well as our entire Parish Staff, for the preparations and organization of this Liturgy and the Reception which we will enjoy soon, in the Lower Church. I am blessed that some of my Family could be here, all of whom brought up the Offertory Gifts earlier in the Mass. They are the loves of my Life: my baby sister, Gina, my niece, Michele, and her husband Armando (on the Police Force here), and their children, who I call my grandchildren my grand-nieces Bryana and Jenna, and grand-nephew Armando, Jr. (AJ). My friends from life in this City, those here from my home Parish St. Francis and beyond, my former colleagues from The Port Authority, my dear friends and partners in ministry from our Chancery Office - thank you for remaining with me throughout the years, and for being here today. could all choose to stay home, or simply be about things with your own Family and Friends, but you don t. You come, you bring and bare your hearts for someone who is bigger and better than any one of us, but who is all that we are, collectively, because He is in each one of us Jesus Christ. It s not about me. Don t come here because of me. Don t NOT come here because of me. Nine Pastors and many other Priests were here before me and, pray God, many more will come after me. Come here because you want, with me, to be here for Jesus, to thank God, and to do things for others who need His care, and the Hope and Peace that He brings. That s what today is celebrating, that s what today is all about. Thank you for accepting me to join you in those celebrations. Pray for me, please, each Day. That I never forget that, and that I set out each Day seeking to become more and more like Christ, for you and for me. Thank you, again. God Bless you. Thank you all for your indulgence in listening to all of these thanks. You would think that is enough. However, there would be no reason to thank any of all of those people and groups if it wasn t for God who gave us all Life and brought us together, and if it wasn t for you the Parishioners of Saints Peter & Paul Parish, being here. And while speaking of you, I don t want to forget to thank a small portion of our Children s Choir, who helped us to sing the Responsorial Psalm along with Katie, and some of our Parish Altar Servers: Quinn, Wyatt, Emily, James, Leo, and Philip. You children represent the future of this Parish, and we are thrilled with you being here, and grateful to your parents and guardians for bringing and entrusting you to us. In the short month and a half that I have been here, I ve begun to meet and pray with many of you and, pray God, we will continue to come to know each other and pray with each other for many years to come. But, if you were not here, there would be no reason for me to be here, and no reason for all of this. Thank you for your dedication to this Parish and to the Lord. It has already been tremendously edifying to me to see the love and dedication of so many of you on a day-to-day basis: from Karen, Stephanie, John, Danny, Elizabeth, Nick, Julia, Karen B, and all of our Parish & Pastoral Staff, to our Trustees Rose & Don, Finance Council chaired by Ed Yruma, Building & Grounds Committee headed up by Bill Burke; the volunteers in, and those who coordinate, the Choir, Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, Ushers, Altar Servers, RCIA, the Children s Formation and activities, and our extensive Social Media outreach. All of you Parishioners who come to Mass and to pray here each Day, who bring your children and friends to fill this Church throughout the Weekend Masses, are the reason and purpose for this Day. 8 Announcements For Release: February 1, 2018 Statement of James Goodness, Vice Chancellor and Director of Communications, Archdiocese of Newark, On Today s nj.com Story Questioning the Archdiocese s Compliance with the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People The Archdiocese of Newark welcomes questions about the high priority that we place on the protection of children and young people. However, we believe that the story released today by NJ Advance Media and its reporter, Erin Banco, contains serious errors of fact and process. I want to set the record straight. The USCCB auditors for the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People have always found the Archdiocese of Newark in compliance with the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People, from the time the Conference instituted audits in 2003, up to and including the two most recent audit years of 2016 and We would be happy to furnish letters to that fact. The Archdiocese is on track for compliance in 2018, and is committed to compliance with all provisions of the Charter. Ms. Banco obtained an early December memo to parishes and schools, and concluded that the Archdiocese is not in compliance this year because a group of parishes and schools had not filed reports by Dec. 1, December 1 is not a mandated date from USCCB auditors for compliance. It is an arbitrary date that the Archdiocese established as a first call to parishes and schools to submit data electronically to the Archdiocese s Office of Child and Youth Protection. The audit year for the USCCB Safe Environment/Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People runs from July 1 June 30. Following the close of any audit year, the Archdiocese has until the beginning of September to submit data to the auditors for evaluation. The Dec. 1, 2017 date cited in Ms. Banco s story is 7 months before the close of the current audit year, which will conclude on June 30, 2018, and 9 months before information actually is due for evaluation by the auditors. This early first call date allows Archdiocesan Youth and Child Protection staff to be in contact with those who, for whatever reason, have not yet filed their reports of staff and volunteer safe environment training and background checks. The early notice helps the staff to address any technical problem or scheduling issue that might be in place. In fact, the early first call is an aggressive, pro-active approach that we have taken to ensure that all parish and school locations are compliant, and in way that is consistent with the Archdiocese s commitment to a safe environment for all children, youth, and vulnerable people whom the Church serves. Occasionally, some parishes or schools fail to report their activity for the audit according to the timeline that we have established internally, well in advance of the prescribed due dates, Reasons for failure to participate typically include changes in staff responsible for reporting, which may prompt delays, or incorrect filing of information electronically. In some cases where parish staffs and volunteers have not changed over the years, parish staff may feel that filing a new report that repeats the prior year s information is not necessary. Office of Youth and Child Protection staff educate those individuals about the importance of continual annual reporting. In her story, Ms. Banco tried to link the inaction of some parishes to obtain accounts for background checks several years ago, when the Archdiocese switched to a new provider, to lack of commitment. In these cases, it is probable that these parishes, relatively small and with little or no turnover, had obtained appropriate background checks for their staff and volunteers in 2013 and 2014, and would only need to begin using a new vendor starting this year We are ensuring that those new accounts will be in place, and updated background checks completed, in time for the end of the audit year. It is important to note that, as of February 1, all 93 schools within the Archdiocese have reported their statistics regarding staff/volunteer safe environment training and background checks, and student participation in safe environment training. As of February 1, only 20 of the 215 parishes within the Archdiocese still have to complete the reports of staff/volunteer safe environment training and background checks. Office of Youth and Child Protection staff are working with those parishes now to ensure that they submit all information in the coming weeks well before the June 30, 2018 end of the audit period. Currently, more than 23,500 adults within the Archdiocese including Clergy and Religious, parish staff and volunteers, and school faculty, staff and volunteers have undergone mandated training in sexual abuse awareness and safe environment, and underdone criminal background checks, per Charter requirements. Ms. Banco quotes in her story an anonymous archdiocese employee who was not authorized to speak on the matter. This source expresses fear about not knowing if many of our teachers working with children have pasts we should be concerned about. The fact of the matter is simple: faculty in schools within the Archdiocese must comply with all licensing requirements of the State of New Jersey Department of Education including fingerprint-based background checks. Had Ms. Banco s source possessed any real understanding of the issue, he would not have made such a gross misrepresentation of the truth. All individuals in the Archdiocese who work with children, youth and vulnerable individuals are required to repeat mandated sexual abuse awareness and safe environment training every 3 years, and to undergo an updated criminal background check every 5 years. While the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People requires only 1 instance of training and background check to obtain compliance, the Archdiocese has for a number of years required more frequent training and checks -- a best practice approach to ensuring safety of children and youth that is being implemented by many dioceses in the United States. The Archdiocese provides the 30,000 children in Archdiocesan schools with annual, age-appropriate safe environment training to provide them with tools to recognize potential boundary violations. The Archdiocese is unaware of any youth-serving organization or educational institution public or private that is as committed as we are to ensuring a safe environment for the individuals we serve, or that is as comprehensive in our approach to securing that environment. We take the protection of children seriously. We are confident we are doing our job. And we always welcome questions that help everyone understand the deep level of our commitment. Sharing God s Blessings Annual Appeal 2018 Annual Appeal Last weekend was our Commitment Weekend for the 2018 Sharing God s Blessings Annual Appeal. If you have not yet completed your card, please prayerfully make your pledge and return it to the church office. We would like 100% participation in our One Body, One Mission that is the Archdiocese of Newark.
