A Stewardship Parish A Letter from Our Pastoral Administrator January 2018 Resolve to Give Back to God in 2018 Dear, Another new year 2018! There was a time in my life when this date (and others) seemed so far in the future. It is amazing how those dates start to pile up and stream by, isn t it? I have reached a point where measuring one s life by the years and dates is not as significant as many other things. I recall reading somewhere, The world around us asks, What does a person own? But God asks, How does a person use what he or she has been given? This month of January is one filled with reminders of holiness the official end of the Christmas season; the Epiphany of our Lord; the Baptism of the Lord; and the return to Ordinary Time, which, as we know, is not ordinary at all. At Epiphany we hear, Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts (Matthew 2:11), a reference to the Magi and their visit to the Christ Child. The image of the Magi kneeling before the infant Jesus and opening their gifts for Him is one we should all try to follow. Each of us is called to open our gifts before Jesus and offer Him what He needs. I heard a suggestion once that if you have a problem with this thought, you should perhaps keep one of the Magi from your Christmas Nativity set and place it on your desk as a reminder. During the Baptism of the Lord, God makes it clear when He proclaims from the Heavens, You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased (Mark 1:11). God has given us the greatest gift He could give. He gave His only Son. When we think about the enormity of that gift of Jesus sent to save us, in addition to all the other blessings that God has entrusted to us, it is very humbling. God has given us so much. What do we give in return? continued on back cover

2 page 2 God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God and God in him (1 Jn 4:16). As Christ s disciples, we are called to live lives of love. When asked which commandment is the most important, Jesus answered, Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your might. He immediately followed this command with, Love your neighbor as yourself. No commandment is greater than these (Mk 12:29-31). The life of a Christian is, essentially, all about love! This doesn t mean that Christ preached an abstract Gospel, or that we need to love simply because it feels good. The reality is quite the opposite. Indeed, Christ s Gospel of love is one of dramatic action, and living in that love calls each of us to action. What is this love, then, of which Christ speaks? How are we to live it out today? Christ, the God who, as John tells us, is love Himself, came to Earth out of pure love for us. So that we might have everlasting life, Christ took the punishment for our sins. He, the Lord of all creation, was mocked, scourged and ultimately murdered on the cross to atone for the sins that we, His creatures, have committed. Now, that s love! And it is the love that we are called to imitate throughout our lives. Notice the selfless nature of Jesus act. He gained nothing in return for what He did, and He calls us to love in the same manner. How do we do that here and now? Do we die on our own personal crosses? The answer, in a way, is yes. We don t necessarily die on the wood of the literal Stewardship Living in Love cross as Christ did, but we must die to self for the sake of others. That is the love of Christ, and that is the love He calls us to every day. If we want to truly love God, we must love others. God Himself showed us the reality of this need when he commanded that we love our neighbor just as we love Him. And then Christ explained, Whatever you do to the least of those, you do to me. If we are called to love God, then we are called to love our neighbor, for Christ resides in each one of us. It must be a love like Christ has shown us one of selflessness. We should want for nothing more than the good of our neighbor. There are many ways that we can show our love to others, particularly through prayer and service. Here at our parish, there are many ministries that offer us the opportunity to serve our neighbors. If we offer a little bit of time, we can help out in the parish office doing seemingly menial yet important tasks, such as stuffing inserts into the bulletins so that fellow parishioners are aware of news and events within the parish. Those of us with an aptitude for teaching may be called to serve others through RCIA or our Religious Education program. There is also always a need for more lectors and Eucharistic Ministers to aid the priest in bringing Christ to other parishioners at Mass. These are but a few of the countless opportunities we have to serve our parish and local community. However we are called to do so, one thing is for certain: the love of Christ calls us to action. How will we show our love for God this year? Remember, Whatever you do for the least of those, you do for me.

3 page 3 As We Celebrate the New Year, We Look Forward to Catholic Schools Week By Gabe Moreno, ASCS Director of Advancement and Mission Happy New Year! What a great time of year! We are all full of hope for the future, a future we are able to predict by creating it. For almost 20 years, Catholic School has been educating our youth and preparing for the future by creating leaders who hold strong Catholic values and understand the importance of faith in their everyday actions. These students are the future of our community and parish, and your continued support of Catholic School ensures that our future is bright. Because of your support, can educate the heart, mind, body, and soul of our youth. Students receive a complete education where reason is illuminated by faith. The result is a student who is both respectful and respected, and seeks to make his or her community a better place. Your participation in the ASCS community has allowed our students to be champions Quiz Bowl champions, Dallas County Spelling Bee champions, Dallas Regional Science and Engineering Fair champions, Basketball champions, Volleyball champions and most importantly, Champions of the Faith. This month, we celebrate Catholic Schools Week. The celebration focuses on all the people who come together to make Catholic education possible. During Catholic Schools Week, we celebrate the parish, the family, the faculty and staff, and the nation. Each of these plays an important role in the success of our Catholic school. As do you. We invite you to join us for any and all of the Catholic Schools Week events. Saturday, January 27: An Evening in Oz 6 p.m. 11 p.m. - Auction Venue Forty 50. Tickets available at Sunday, January 28: Catholic Schools Mass 9:15 a.m. & 11 a.m. Breakfast after Mass in Fellowship Hall. Tuesday, January 30: Celebrating our Students Wednesday, January 31: Celebrating our Nation 8 a.m. - Flag ceremony and Rosary Thursday, February 1: Celebrating our Vocations Career Day gmoreno@allsaintsdallas.org if you would like to participate. Friday, February 2: Celebrating our Faculty and Staff 8 a.m. - School Mass at Catholic School Thank you for all you do to make Catholic School successful. We hope you join us in celebrating our wonderful school. Safe Environment Tips: Take the Time to Listen Positive and open communication is key to protecting children from predators. Establish a regular time to talk about what is going on in your child s life. You could sit on the porch after dinner or talk on the way home from school. Encourage your child to tell you when a person or a situation makes them feel uncomfortable. Reassure them that their feelings are valid and make a plan to take action. Engage with your child s community. If your child takes part in a youth organization (such as scouting or a community program), ask the leaders about the safety measures they take. For example, at, anyone who volunteers with youth is required to be cleared through Safe Environment, which includes an interview, background check, references and yearly training.

4 page 4 Fr. Jovita Okoli Reflects on Experience at For Fr. Jovita Okoli, the journey of faith began during his youth and bright and early in the morning, as his father would wake him at 5 a.m. for church. Both of us had to be in the church by 5:30 to say morning prayer and then wait for the priest to show up at 6 a.m. for weekday Masses, Fr. Jovita recalls. That was one of the things that drew me to the altar and to considering being a priest. My father brought me to the Church. It became part of me then, and it never stopped. Such was the beginning of Fr. Jovita s faith, growing up in Nigeria. Fr. Jovita has now been in the U.S. for 12 years and at since last July. He has enjoyed serving and becoming part of the life of the parish. Here at, they are like a community, like a family, Fr. Jovita says. They have people who have been in the parish for almost 40 years and are still happy in the parish, and they have new families coming in. In the past several months since he has been assigned to the parish, Fr. Jovita has been involved in a host of ways, from pastoral ministry, training alter servers, and Arise Nights to Living Matrimony and Christ Renews His Parish. He has also enjoyed having the opportunity to teach a series on the Eucharist. Fr. Jovita, a soccer enthusiast, has found that many of the skills he learned as an athlete growing up have served him as a priest. I played soccer all my life, but it came to a point where I had to make a decision in college whether to be a priest or to keep playing soccer, and I stopped playing soccer for competition, Fr. Jovita says. As a soccer player, you have to be disciplined because you have to be in shape to be able to play. The second thing I learned is teamwork. Soccer is a team sport everyone has their own contribution to make as part of the team. Soccer really helped me understand the value of teamwork, which has been helping me in my priesthood. Fr. Jovita has found that his experience playing soccer in Nigeria has helped him develop self-discipline and a spirit of teamwork, both of which have served him well in his ministry as a priest. Maybe soccer has helped me a lot, he adds, with a smile. Just as Fr. Jovita first experienced growing in his relationship with God through the witness of his father, many of our parishioners each year have the opportunity to deepen their

5 page 5 and Upcoming Retreat Opportunities faith, inspired by the faith and example of others at Christ Renews His Parish or CRHP weekends. CRHP is a retreat that s given by parishioners, to parishioners, says Rosemary Greene. It helps you to understand that you re not alone on this faith journey. Rosemary has been involved with CRHP for the past two years, since she attended the first CRHP held at. She currently serves as the Chair of the Continuation Committee, a resource for new CRHP teams. I was expecting great things and it was so much better than I expected, Rosemary says of the CRHP weekend that she attended, two years ago. I thought I d come out stronger in my faith, but it was so much better. With the sharing of the team that was presenting and the activities that they had, that really helped us grow closer to God and grow closer to each other. Following an experience of CRHP, participants are invited to participate in six months of continued faith formation, preparing to share their faith and witness of God s work in their lives at the next retreat. Through that process, we grew closer to God, we grew closer to each other and realized that God really does work in our lives, Rosemary says. After first attending, and then facilitating the subsequent retreat, CRHP participants spread out, finding many different ways to be involved in the parish and community around them. After the retreat is over, we really want to go out into the parish, kind of like how Jesus sent the disciples out their role was to go out and spread the Word and share what they knew, Rosemary says. People have gotten involved in all sorts of organizations at church they are all benefitting from the spiritual growth that has happened at CRHP, and that s really what it s all about. Fr. Jovita, who has worked with CRHP in two of his previous parishes, serves as chaplain, working with the committee made up of parishioners who have experienced the retreat. One of Fr. Jovita s favorite things he has done since arriving at the parish was giving a teaching series on the Eucharist. CRHP is more about people evangelizing through their own lives, he says. It s not like a preached retreat or a silent retreat, but a retreat of testimonies, where people use their personal lives to evangelize other people. In my former parishes, CRHP had a great impact in the lives of many people. Fr. Jovita encourages parishioners who have not yet experienced a CRHP weekend to consider attending. If a person is really sincere about renewing his or her faith, CRHP is really a good program to start with, Fr. Jovita says. It s about ordinary people helping each other grow in our faith and sharing our practical everyday experiences. It s just ordinary people, sharing real-life experiences. Don t be afraid to give it a try. Make yourself available to God and listen to His call to grow in your faith, Rosemary adds. Maybe you re feeling something s missing, maybe you re feeling that you need to grow in your faith, maybe there s a tug at your heart that says, I need something more. It s probably God s call to come to this retreat. If you would like more information on Christ Renews His Parish, please contact Barbara Hammond at or bhammond@allsaintsdallas.org. CRHP retreats take place twice a year in the fall and the spring. The spring men s CRHP will take place April 14-15, with the women s following April

6 page 6 The Blessings of the Catholic Mass It is ironic that today, with all of the freedom of religion that we enjoy in the United States, many of us wonder why we must go to Mass on Sunday. However, if we really understood what the Mass is and how we participate in the celebration, we would instead be asking why we are, as sinful human beings, blessed with the opportunity to participate in the holy Mass. If we simply understood and recognized that God s infinite goodness allows us to do so, we would be eager to go to Mass on Sunday and every other day of the week. It is true, however, that all Catholics are obliged to Keep holy the Lord s Day by sharing in the Mass. But why are we obliged? The Eucharistic Liturgy is the center of our faith. It is the summit toward which all activity of the Church is directed and it is the font from which all her power flows (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy 10). It does not exhaust the activity of the Church, but is most certainly her greatest work. The sacrifice of Christ on the cross is literally re-presented to the Father during Mass, and Christ allows us to join with Him in offering that sacrifice. Imagine our Lord and Savior dying on the cross for us right up the street. Imagine knowing that Mary is sitting at the foot of the cross with St. John, witnessing her Son giving Himself to the Father for the sake of all of us. Would we not run to be there? Would we not desire to share in His sacrifice, just as Mary did? Believe it or not, the sacrifice of Calvary is really, truly happening at our parish, every time the Mass is offered. Our participation in Mass gives us the strength and the graces we need to live our lives as Christ s disciples. So, what does this mean for us? This means we have a front row seat to the sacrifice of Calvary. Given such a gift, how can we not accept it? We also have a chance to join in Jesus sacrifice by offering our own prayers and petitions. As an example, what better gift could we give deceased loved ones than the offering of prayers for their souls in purgatory? Most importantly, we have the opportunity to receive the Eucharist, followed by quiet time, when we offer sincere thanks and allow God s graces to fill us. Think of all you are missing when you do not properly prepare yourself to receive the Holy Eucharist. We ought to joyfully head to Church each Sunday, eager to give God glory in the greatest way we can! Attending and actively participating in Mass every Sunday is our obligation as Catholics. But we should not allow the fact that our attendance is required to stop us from going. Nor should we allow our laziness to overshadow the amazing privilege and the many blessings that lay before us in the Mass. The pope and the bishops direct us to participate in the Eucharistic Liturgy every Sunday because they know there is no better way to keep holy the Lord s day giving God thanks for all He has done for us in the most powerful way possible. They know that, through the Mass, we gain the graces necessary to live our lives in this world. Our ability to participate in the Mass is a wonderful gift, not a great burden. May Christ enlighten our minds and hearts to clearly see the wonders of the celebration, and give us great enthusiasm and eagerness to participate.

7 page 7 Deepening One s Friendship with Jesus through the Holy Eucharist Since May 2016, the spiritual lives of Sean and Caitlin Sammis haven t been the same. Receiving their First Holy Communion has brought them to a new level in their friendship with Christ. Now, when they come to Mass, they can receive the blessed Eucharist, and allow their eternal friend Jesus to become one with them in a phenomenal way. It is so special that it is hard to put it into words, Sean says. The first time I received my First Confession and my First Communion, I grew one step closer to Christ. I felt very close to Him. Sean found that receiving his First Sacraments as a sixth-grader opened his heart to grace in a meaningful way. I am glad I received them at an older age, Sean says. I was more mature and was able to receive them with a better understanding of what I was doing. And when the Sammis family renewed their commitment to Christ and became more active Catholics, Sean s experience of the sacraments deepened. When I was younger, our family didn t come to Mass and I didn t really understand what my faith meant, he says. I only knew the basics. Now we do go to Mass often, as well as Religious Education classes, so I am able to understand the meaning behind the sacraments better. I have had a complete change in my lifestyle it has become more wholesome. And so did Caitlin s. When you receive Communion for the first time, you just know it is a special moment, Caitlin says. It is fun to see all of your friends receiving it, too. Our parish had us sing a really nice song about the Eucharist after we received, and I really liked that. A lot of my family members came, as well. I now look forward to receiving Jesus when I come to Mass. Spotlight on the Sacraments First Communion Caitlin and Sean Sammis after celebrating their First Communion When asked what he would say to someone preparing to receive their First Communion, Sean points out that he wouldn t necessarily tell them anything. Instead, I would ask them if they really understand what they doing and how special it is, he says. I would encourage them to take time to look into it and pray about it. Impressively, Sean s initial desire to embrace the beauty of Catholicism has inspired his family, as well. It was Sean s decision to deepen his faith and receive his First Holy Communion, his mother, Sally, says. I grew up Methodist. It has meant a lot to our family to belong to this parish community. We have an awesome parish. As a mother, it has been wonderful to see what it means to my children. It has been very fulfilling to witness them appreciating their Catholic faith so much.

We will also hear this month about how Jesus called the first apostles. The Lord calls us as well to follow Him. Let us resolve to try to do that better all of us. That does not mean we have to leave our work and our families behind, but we do need to put our service to Jesus. That should be our top resolution. In The Theology of the Hammer, Habitat for Humanity co-founder Millard Fuller wrote, The only truly safe investment one can make in life is what is given away. First and foremost, God wants us. That should be our real resolution to give ourselves to the Lord. May we all do a better job of that in God bless you all. Yours in Christ, Fr. Alfonse Nazzaro Pastoral Administrator
