2 Today we commemorate the oldest basilica in Rome and one of the oldest Catholic churches in the world the Archbasilica know as St. John Lateran. Why is this particular church so important? It is the official church of the Bishop of Rome Pope Francis. What s a basilica? Originally, a basilica described a Roman court house. Once the persecutions stopped, Christians chose the architecture of the Roman basilica for the shape of their largest churches. Today, the pope bestows this title on a large church as an honor as with our own Queen of All Saints Basilica on Sauganash Ave. in the city. The Archbasilica of St. John Lateran and its adjoining palace have had a long history. Originally the site of the Archbasilica was a fort built in AD 193 for the Imperial Roman Horse Guard. Sextus Lateranus, the first plebian (commoner) to attain to the office of Consul of Rome, built his palace next to the fort. Hence the name Lateran attached to the property. His family administered Rome during the reign of three emperors. However the Laterani family ran afoul of the emperor Nero who accused them of treason and confiscated their property. About the year AD 192 the empire entered a period of upheaval during which emperors came and went in rapid succession resulting in a series of civil wars. This upheaval ended with four emperors ruling various parts of the empire. But that didn t work either. The Emperor Constantine, desiring to reunite the all the parts, fought and defeated the others. Once in Rome Constantine destroyed the fort of the Horse Guard. In AD 313, Constantine gave the palace and property to the Pope. Pope St. Sylvester I refurbished the palace, built a basilica over the ruins of the fort and dedicated the basilica to The Most Holy Savior. (Every patriarch has dedicated their basilica to The Most Holy Savior.) Pope Sylvester moved into the Lateran in time for the synod of 313. By moving into the palace he made the Lateran basilica the official seat of the Bishop of Rome and the premier church of the Catholic world. Because of this, it is the only Catholic church to bear the title of Archbasilica. After the fall of the Roman Empire in AD 476 the papacy became the stabilizing influence in Europe, filling the void created by the end of Roman rule. For roughly six centuries the Popes held great power both spiritual and secular. This was the period some historians call the Dark Ages or the Early Middle Ages. During this entire period the popes ruled from the Lateran. In the 10 th century Pope Sergius III rededicated the Archbasilica to St. John the Baptist to honor the new baptistery he had built. In the 12 th century Pope Lucius II dedicated the Archbasilica yet again this time to St. John the Evangelist. So, technically, the church s title is Archbasilica of the Most Holy Savior and St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist at the Lateran. Now, that s quite a mouthful in any language, so it s no surprise that it s been shortened to St. John Lateran. The 13 th and 14 th centuries saw the rise of the nations we recognize as Europe. These were tumultuous times. As the new kings of Europe took secular power the papacy began to lose its influence which led to lots of conflict between kings and popes. While all this was going on, the main noble families of Rome took to fighting each other vigorously to put one of their own on the papal throne causing turmoil in the city. If you think our politics is bad, read up on what was going on in Rome during this time. Disgusted with all the strife over papal elections, the French cardinals in 1305 removed themselves to France and elected one of their own. Because of all the infighting (and the prospect of having poison added to his wine) Clement V refused to live in Rome and stayed in Avignon France instead, bringing the Curia (papal government) to Avignon in From then on a succession of 7 French popes ruled from Avignon. By 1377, however, many rulers in Europe thought the French king had too much influence over the pope and the rumblings from Rome suggested the people were threatening to reject him. St. Catherine of Sienna urged Gregory XI to move back to Rome. And he did. During all this time St. John Lateran had fallen into disrepair. There were two fires one in 1307 and one in 1361 which left the palace and Archbasilica in a poor state even though the pope had sent money to repair the Archbasilica and palace,. So when Gregory XI arrived in Rome he chose not to live there. After trying two other palaces he moved into the Vatican palace next to St. Peter s where the popes have resided ever since. However, no pope from Gregory XI to Francis has moved the seat of the Bishop of Rome from St. John Lateran so it remains to this day the official seat of the Bishop of Rome. Today s celebration is not so much about a building as about what it represents. The Bishop of Rome has for centuries been considered the successor of St. Peter and thus the head of the Church. What today celebrates is the unity of the Church under the Pope. Today the peoples of the Third World make up the majority of the Catholic Church which means we, of the First World, need to pay more attention to our brothers and sisters living in South America, Africa and Asia. The Holy Father himself is from the Third World. By recognizing St. John Lateran as the mother church we proclaim our unity. In today s Church with all the scandals and differences of opinion and being more aware of our being a global Church, we need to remind ourselves that, despite our differences, we are a global family. And the family church is St. John Lateran. Fr. Denis November 9, 2014 Page 2

THE HOUSE S FOUNDATION If we understand the human person as the temple of the Holy Spirit - the living house of God - then these latter issues fall logically into place as the crossbeams and walls of that house. All direct attacks on innocent human life, such as abortion and euthanasia, strike at the house s foundation. These directly and immediately violate the human person s most fundamental right - the right to life. To neglect these issues is the equivalent of building our house on sand. ~Statement by the Catholic Bishops of the United States Plans are underway for the Breakfast with Santa set for Sunday, December 14th in the Colonnade Room. 8 Dear Friends in Christ, With the help of God s grace, I will celebrate my 78th birthday this coming January. I submitted a letter of resignation as Archbishop of Chicago to our Holy Father on my 75th birthday in 2012, as required by Canon Law. While waiting for the Pope s appointment of the ninth Archbishop of Chicago, Archbishop Blase Cupich, I reflected often on our Church in Chicago and, more personally on the legacy I will leave it when I am gone. With the future in mind, we launched the To Teach Who Christ Is campaign to strengthen our local parishes while also supporting Catholic education and faith formation. I am proud to report that your more than 20,000 gifts are already making a difference, and will continue to do so for years to come. I take great pride in speaking with Archbishop Cupich about your generosity, a sign of God s Spirit at work in our lives. To be sure that future generations may encounter Christ, I have also decided to leave what I can as a gift to the schools of the Archdiocese of Chicago in my will - my final prayerful expression of Christian stewardship. Similarly, I now ask you to reflect on your legacy. Your legacy gift, such as a bequest to your parish, a specific ministry or the campaign, will support the Church for future generations. I am deeply grateful for your generosity and prayers for the campaign s success. I hope you will continue to keep the ministry of the Church in your prayers. You and those you love are in mine. Sincerely yours in Christ, Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I. Archbishop of Chicago
