1 SAINT FRANCIS XAVIER PARISH EASTER SUNDAY APRIL 16, 2017 Alleluia and Blessed Easter The Stone has been rolled away by Love. OUR MISSION STATEMENT ST. FRANCIS XAVIER IS A CATHOLIC- JESUIT PARISH IGNITED BY THE EUCHARIST TO PRAY, SERVE, DO JUSTICE, AND LOVE.
2 May we celebrate, the 125 years of grace that has sustained us for so long and continues to vivify our hearts and impel us to action. May we hold fast to our mission as: Catholic-Jesuit Parish ignited by the Eucharist to pray, serve, do justice and love. May we become the Alleluia! that our world needs so much to hear. On behalf of Fr. Perry, S.J., Fr. Holland, S.J., Fr. Hightower, S.J. and all the staff at St. Francis Xavier, I pray that you may have a blessed and joyous Easter. Pastor 2
3 Easter & Its Symbols It is on Sunday that we assemble, because Sunday is the first day: the day on which God transformed darkness and matter and created the world, and the day on which Christ our Savior rose from the dead. ~Justin, 2nd Century The Triduum - literally, three days recalling the death and resurrection of Jesus - ends with the holiest celebration of the Church year: the Great Vigil of Easter. Since ancient days, this celebration of Christ s resurrection from the dead has been the time when the story of our salvation has been told and new members have been welcomed into our company. In our own day, especially since Vatican II and the restoration of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, this has been the day when women and men are baptized and confirmed into the Church. The Vigil, and indeed, all of Easter is marked by the fundamental symbols of our faith, and understanding these may help us better enter into the holy season. Fire & Light: The Easter Vigil begins with the lighting of the great fire and blessing of the Paschal Candle. This fire represents the power of the Spirit, which drives back the darkness in the raising of Jesus, and the movement of new life in the light of spring. The Easter candle, which recalls the pillar of fire that led Israel through the desert, ignites all the other candles, without ever losing any of its own light - as Jesus sharing out of God s grace feeds us without diminishing him. The Easter candle is marked by the Presider with five pins, suggesting the wounds of Christ, which remain with him, even when he is glorified in resurrection. Also, there are symbols on the candle, including the date and the Alpha and Omega, suggesting that Jesus is Lord both of history and eternity. Further, as the cross was raised three times during the Good Friday service, so the candle is raised three times, as we proclaim and give thanks for Christ our light, who dispels the darkness. Then, as the people of God enter into their house of light, the great and ancient hymn of Easter - the Exsultet ( a command, meaning Rejoice ) - is sung, while all hold up their lights in the joy of Christ s rising. Water & Passage: As the liturgy goes on, we hear many readings - the whole history of salvation, from the creation to the resurrection of Jesus, and the choice of us as God s people. At the center of these readings is the Exodus from Egypt, the liberation of the Jewish people, which is the foretaste of our liberation in the Passover of Christ from death to new life. As Israel is called through the Red Sea, so we turn to the waters of the new font, where we (and our Elect) cross over to life in Christ. The priest blesses the waters with the Easter candle: a sign of the Exodus; a sign of unity (e.g., fire with water, heaven with earth); and a sign of birth (e.g., the feminine image of water meeting the masculine image of the candle). Indeed, the water means many things, including the womb, where life begins, and the tomb, from which Christ rises. So much more could be said that can t fit here. Yet, in all these symbols, one of the greatest: us. For Christ became what we are, so that we might become what he is. Look around and see the sacrament of Christ in each one here. 3
