Share that cheerful greeting with some folks today. They may wonder if you have had any Elvis sightings lately, attended Star Trek conventions, or were Cleopatra in a previous lifetime. Despite the skeptics, today is solidly within the Christmas season. In fact, in some strands of the Christian tradition it represents the clearest manifestation of the mystery of the Incarnation. On Christmas Day, for example, the Gospel reading is the Prologue of John's Gospel, which reveals the glory of Christ shining through our humanity precisely in his baptism. At any rate, this is an ancient feast, celebrated first in Egypt sixteen centuries ago. More than most other ancient people, the Egyptians understood the life-giving properties of water. On this day, they drew water from the Nile, so central in the history of their people, and reserved it in honor. Many other places copied the custom, so that St. John Chrysostom wrote of people in Antioch gathering at midnight to collect flowing water into vessels they brought from home since "today there is a blessing on the water." At home for dinner tonight, decorate the table with beautiful bowls of water and white candles, toast one another with goblets of sparkling water, and light a Christmas candle in the window one last time. --Rev. 2 Readings for the Week Sacramental Policies ANOINTING OF THE SICK At the 8:30am Mass on the first Friday of each month. BAPTISM Parents will need to provide a copy of the child s birth certificate and participate in a class. Baptismal Classes are held on the 2nd Saturday of the month at 11 am in the Church office. Parents must call the church office to register for the class. Godparents must be practicing Catholics who are confirmed and married in the Church, if married. CONFESSION Confessions are offered one-half hour before all Masses, or anytime upon request. CONFIRMATION Confirmation will be given students in 8th grade or above. They must have completed the 8th grade religious education class and optimally the 7th as well. Sponsors must be practicing Catholics who are already confirmed and married in the Church, if married. Parents should not be sponsors for their own children. For information on Confirmation preparation for adults please contact the pastor. FIRST HOLY COMMUNION First Holy Communion will be offered to children in Grade 2. Children must attend CCD regularly throughout Grade 2 in order to receive the Sacrament in May of that year. Students will also be prepared for the Sacrament of Reconciliation in Grade 2. MARRIAGE Both parties are expected to participate in the preparation program. Parties must notify the pastor at least one year prior to their proposed marriage date. Please meet with the pastor for a fuller explanation and to make arrangements. Angelic Letter book sales there have totaled over $5,000, with our second weekend sale planned for January 23rd and 24th. In addition, they have indicated their intention to help us with our kitchen equipment in our new building. Their major fund raiser is their Annual Golf Tournament scheduled for 8:15 am on Saturday, March 13th. All proceeds from the tournament are used to finance the St. George Student Scholarship Fund. The Tournament is a 4-man scramble format at Mountainbrook Golf Club in Gold Canyon, AZ (just east of Apache Junction on US 60). Cost is $80 per person and includes green fees, cart, lunch, and an extensive prize list. We have entered a foursome from St Michael to support their efforts. Is there any doubt that our world today needs Jesus to come and dwell among us? As a new year begins, let us resolve to be a more effective and dedicated instrument of Jesus. Let us do more to promote love and peace. Let us do more to help moms turn the unplanned into a loving plan that embraces innocent life. Let us do more to change our culture of death.
