2 I have extended an invitation to Fr. George Knab, O.M.I. to come to our parish next weekend. Fr. Knab will speak to us about the work being done by an organization called Unbound. (formerly called the Christian Foundation for Children and the Aged). Unbound provides us with a trustworthy way to actively participate in the social outreach of the Catholic Church and answer our call to serve the poor. Founded by Catholics, Unbound is an organization that has served more than 600,000 children, youth and elderly in 18 developing countries since 1981 empowering them to make more choices in their lives, live with dignity and reach their potential. Unbound s unique sponsorship program is highly personalized. It matches a child, youth or aging person at a project overseas with a sponsor in our country who cares about and encourages that person.. With a monthly contribution, a sponsor helps to provide much-needed nourishment, medical and dental care, the chance for a child to go to school, livelihood programs for families and much more. A large number of people in our parish already are sponsoring through Unbound. I have sponsored an elderly woman and a young man through Unbound. I receive letters from both of them regularly and send and letters to them as well. We all have a chance to personally reach out to the least and the lost who need our help. Father will bring a number of possible sponsorships for us to consider. Opportunity knocks! Can you answer?...if you know a couple planning an upcoming marriage, we have received a notice that we will join St. Mary in Chardon and St. Helen in Newbury for the Pre-Cana Day coming up on March 16 at St. Mary in Chardon. The team is seeking new members. The next meeting is on January 16 at 7:00pm at St. Helen...We invite all 5th to 8th graders to a Bowling Party on Friday, January 25 from 7:00 9:00pm at Skylane Bowling in Garrettsville. Many thanks to all who have made this opportunity possible. We are also looking toward the Steubenville Catholic Youth Conference in July for our high school parishioners. More later... It s A Matter of Life... Those favoring the pro death side consistently argue that a decision to abort should involve only a woman and her doctor. This argument simplified says that the decision belongs between the woman and the murderer for hire. There are millions of people who have committed murder. Should it stay between them and their gun salesmen, knife sharpener, ball bat maker, or whomever? It doesn't matter how many do it...it doesn't make it right. Abortion is an ugly, ugly business. Those who continue to support this heinous act are merely denying the truth. Our readings this week all stress the same theme, that this is the beginning of a great mission. Jesus, filled with the Holy Spirit, begins his mission to transform us. Over the past few weeks we have been celebrating Jesus birthday and his childhood. Now he is an adult and is ready to begin his life s work. This work is described by Isaiah in the first reading. He will bring God s harmony to creation not by calling out in the streets, but by opening the eyes of the blind and freeing captives and all who live in darkness. In our second reading Peter tells us that after John s baptism God anointed Jesus with the Holy Spirit and with power. As we watch Jesus begin his mission, it s a good time to ask about our own lives. What do we see as our own life s work? What gives our lives meaning? Where do we derive our deepest satisfaction? Sometimes we define ourselves by our work, by what we do during working hours. Some measure their success as human beings by the money they make and the things they own. Others get their greatest satisfaction from pleasure or from the exercise of power. All these things can be good. They re nice things to have, but when they end up defining us, when we find in them our whole sense of self-worth, then we are settling for much less than we could be. We are made in the image and likeness of God, and God is love. We are most successful then when we reach out to others when we enrich the lives of others and the welfare of others means more to me than my own convenience. We are at our best when we are giving, especially when we give of our time, talent and treasure. The baptism of Jesus, which we celebrate today, was the beginning of great things for him. Our own Baptism was the beginning of great things for us, it was a call to greatness, to be like him, the one who brings the presence of God. (James DiGiacomo, SJ)

Divorce Recovery for Catholics Support Group, an 8 Week Support Group designed to meet the needs of those who are divorced or separated, will begin Thursday, January 17-March 7, at St. Gabriel Parish, 9925 Johnnycake Ridge Road, Concord.. 4 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Merry Christmas! Share that cheerful greeting with some folks today. They may wonder if you have had any Elvis sightings lately, attended Star Trekkie conventions, or were Cleopatra in a previous lifetime. Despite the skeptics, today is solidly within the Christmas season. In fact, in some strands of the Christian tradition it represents the clearest manifestation of the mystery of the Incarnation. On Christmas Day, for example, the Gospel reading is the Prologue of John s Gospel, which reveals the glory of Christ shining through our humanity precisely in his baptism. At any rate, this is an ancient feast, celebrated first in Egypt sixteen centuries ago. More than most other ancient people, the Egyptians understood the life giving properties of water. On this day, they drew water from the Nile, so central in the history of their people, and reserved it in honor. Many other places copied the custom, so that St. John Chrysostom wrote of people in Antioch gathering at midnight to collect flowing water into vessels they brought from home since today there is a blessing on the water. At home for dinner tonight, decorate the table with beautiful bowls of water and white candles, toast one another with goblets of sparkling water, and light a Christmas candle in the window one last time. As a child, he came to Mary and Joseph, was seen by the shepherds, and then by some wandering magi from the East. Today we celebrate another showing, later in time, to a group gathered at the Jordan River. John hesitated to baptize Jesus, whom he recognized as one mightier than I. But he did as Jesus asked, and the Holy Spirit descended and heaven s voice spoke to Jesus, You are my beloved Son. Jesus was beginning his public life of teaching and service. Soon he would start calling others to join him. Peter was one of the first to be called by Jesus. In today s second reading, he announces the heart of the message, peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. Peter was called, and you and I are called to spread that message and to serve God s word. Copyright J. S.
