The monthly newsletter of Redeemer Lutheran Church-Rochester, Minnesota September 2015 Mission Statement will be our theme for the program year. You could say we are going back to the basics! We recall the words of St. Peter as he wrote to the people of Corinth: No one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. (1 Corinthians 3:11) We will want to be in the WORD. Our Sunday morning Education Hour will resume on September 13. ChristCare groups continue, as well as circles and Bible studies at various times each week. Many individuals and families set aside time each week to be in the scripture. And it is in the Word of God, that we come to appreciate what the Word (Jesus) has done for us all. We pray that this will be the foundation for our lives this year and every year! 3 Staff Reflections As I write this note for the September Resource, there are still a lot of questions surrounding the program year. Will the office renovation be done in time for our Sunday School classrooms? Will the kitchen renovation be done in time for Bible Study Hour? Will the new projection system be done in time for services? And, of course, will Josh Heirigs be blessing us as our new Director of Youth and Education? To this list I am sure each of our members could add other questions both from our Redeemer family and from their daily lives. Some of these questions will be answered with a No, and some of them with a yes. Some of these questions may even go unanswered. These questions can bring excitement, worry, anticipation, and can be time consuming. Here is another set of questions. What is our strength for our present? What is our hope for the future even our eternal future? What is the thing we need more than anything? What is Our Sure Foundation? These questions never goes unanswered. Regardless of the answers to our first set of questions the answer to these questions never change! No one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 3:11 The Foundation for our church is Jesus Christ. The Foundation for our homes is Jesus Christ. The Foundation for our careers, marriages, friendships, children, hobbies, talents, passions is Jesus Christ. The Foundation for our witness in the world is Jesus Christ. No matter how many question marks we have and how daunting the questions may seem, Our Sure Foundation in Jesus is something we never have to question. Our theme this year is Our Sure Foundation. I pray that this theme will be applied, not just to our time at Redeemer, but to us as Redeemer in our homes and daily lives. I pray that through us living out our mission of live out, lift up and share our faith along with our third guiding principle sharing the joy of the Gospel through word and deed locally and globally that others this year will come to know Our Sure Foundation. The Church s one foundation Is Jesus Christ her Lord; She is His new creation By water and the word. From Heaven He came and sought her To be His holy bride; With His own blood He bought her, And for her life He died. In a special Voters Meeting in late July, permission was given to the Council to purchase the dilapidated house next to the office, if it could be obtained for a reasonable price. An offer was made, but someone else made an earlier and better offer. We have hope that the owners will live in the home and maintain it! Movie Night Friday, September 11, pm Fellowship Hall All are welcome to put on their slippers, bring a comfortable chair, and some change for pizza and pop (if you want) or a snack; and take a break with your fellow members for an evening of entertainment. O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? Three prisoners bust loose from a Mississippi chain gang all shackled to each other. With nothing to lose and buried loot to regain before it is lost in a flood the three embarked on an adventure with strange characters, a blind prophet, sirens and a one-eyed Bible salesman. It is an odyssey filled with chases, close calls, near misses and betrayal that will leave you laughing at each twist and turn. Players are George Clooney, Tim Blake Nelson, John Turturro, and John Goodman. DEAD RECKONING Humprey Bogart is an ex-g.i. trying to find out who framed his pal for murder then rubbed him out. Tracing his buddy s shadowy past leads him to Coral Chandler (Lizabeth Scott) who once was his sweetheart. Is Coral an innocent thrush or is she a predatory siren leading Bogie to the Dead Reckoning? GREETERS NEEDED We are in need of additional greeters for our Saturday evening worship services. Do you have the time to help out once in a while? Please contact Larry Stoen (lstoen@charter.net or ) if you would like more information or volunteer. Page 5

Fellowship Tables (Tables of 8) Join us for a fun way to meet fellow members of Redeemer in a relaxed, social se ng. Each group of 8 (singles and couples) meets 3 or 4 mes throughout the year for a shared meal and me of fellowship. Guidelines are suggested for mee ng mes (October, January, March and June, 6:30 8:30 p.m.), but each group makes their own schedule. Host du es typically rotate among group members homes, with each member contribu ng to the meal. The hardest part is leaving the previous year s group, since wonderful rela onships are formed as we enjoy me together in a relaxed se ng! There is no limit to par cipants new groups form each October for the year based on sign ups. An effort is made to mix ages and members to offer another opportunity to connect with our fellow congregants at Redeemer. A designated group coordinator will host the first meal, call each member/couple and coordinate the other dishes to bring. You may indicate your willingness to coordinate on the sign up beginning on Rally Day at the Welcome Center or in the weekly bulle n. Group assignments, with instruc ons, will be mailed at the beginning of October. Complete a sign up in the weekly bulle n and drop it in the offering plate. Ques ons? 7 Sunday Adult Bible Classes JOINT BIBLE CLASS ON RALLY DAY, SEPTEMBER 13 Plan to join Pastor Koglin in the Fellowship Hall and take the time to meet our new members as well as hear more about our theme for the year, Our Sure Foundation. These classes will begin on Sunday, September 20, at 9:20 am. Lutheran Worship A Closer Look In a class last year, we examined what the Bible has to say about worship, and how the church has worshipped through the years. But we ran out of time! Pastor Heining will continue the discussion in this class, which will look specifically at the origins and meanings of the services that we are currently using. Deuteronomy: Improving Short-Term Memory We will work on improving our short-term memory by: Remembering who we are, remembering our foundation, and remembering who we owe it to. Come and learn about the book that is quoted or alluded to 195 times in the New Testament and its impact on your daily lives. Creation Class This year in our creation class we will hear 15 PHD scientists explain evolution's fatal flaws. We will also hear Brian Young debate a college professor. During the third class Brian Young will actually be in town for our conference and talking to the class. Then in week four we will hear about the Tower of Babel. Come and get answers that you can use to "always be ready to give an account of the hope that is in you". Elderberries Gathering (For those young people age 50 and better!) We will meet Tuesday, September 22, at 11:30 am, in the Fellowship Hall. ( The reason for meeting on the fourth Tuesday in September is to accommodate the speaker.) The menu will include apple cinnamon pork chops, mashed baked potatoes with gravy, house salad with two dressings, buttered rolls and dessert. The cost is $7.50. The speaker will be Jay Kurtz. Jay will be showing pictures of his wife s, Joan Rabe, recent trip to Italy. Come and listen to Jay and Joan and enjoy the Christian fellowship. The sign-up sheet will be at the Welcome Center or call or text Ted Saxman at (or him: tsaxman@charter.net) if you want to attend. Please sign up by Sunday, September 20. If you would be willing to bring a dessert, please indicate that on the separate dessert sign-up sheet and Ted will contact you if he needs you to bring a dessert. Please remember if you can't attend and you have not cancelled by Sunday, September 20, Elderberries will be charged for your meal. Any questions, call Ted Saxman at Pray for Redeemer s Church Work Students We are thankful to have four members of Redeemer studying for full-time professional church work careers at the present time. They are: Eric Hauan is now beginning his final year at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis. Lord willing, he will be ordained and begin his first pastorate next summer. Samantha (Carlson) Guthrie is in her fourth year in the Director of Christian Outreach program at Concordia University in St. Paul. Recently married, she has already begun a yearlong internship at St. Peter s Lutheran Church in Afton, Minnesota. Then she will have one more year of studies before graduation. Nicolette Johnson is studying to be a Director of Christian Education at Concordia University in Chicago. For the first semester of her second year, she was chosen to study theology at Cambridge University (England!) Conner Wondrasch is also in his second year of studies at Concordia University in Chicago. He has recently decided to change from the DCE program to the pre-seminary program. We have been working to provide some financial support for these students but we especially want to support them with our prayers and words of encouragement. (By the way, we might have two more beginning in the fall of 2016!) Page 7

REDEEMER LUTHERAN CHURCH RUMMAGE SALE September 18, :30 am to 5:00 pm September 19, :00 am to Noon The Annual ALL CONGREGATION Fall Rummage Sale is coming up soon! Don t wait for someone to call you volunteer to help for this event! Mark your calendar Help will be needed Monday, September 14, at 6 pm. Mike Hanley has volunteered to lead a crew in charge of the heavy li ing (ex. Moving tables, se ng up tables and clothing racks). If you have ques ons or might be able to help, please contact Mike at ) Volunteers will also be needed to set up, sort, and price on Tuesday, September 15 (a er Bible study) through Wednesday (16th) and Thursday (17th). Help with heavier items is also needed before and during the sale. During the sale Redeemer members help keep goods in orderly displays, fill in as cashiers and baggers, help customers, and at the end of the sale (Noon on Saturday), help box up the remaining items and pick up the Fellowship Hall. Sarah Circle will offer lunch and baked goods during the sale. If you have any ques ons or would like to volunteer, please contact Delores McGillivray ( or lwmler@charter.net). Project Updates OFFICE RENOVATION The contractor is doing his best to meet our goal of being finished by Labor Day. As of this writing (August 19) the walls are all up, painting is almost done, doorways are in place, rough plumbing and electrical are done, and the cabinets are being built. We are still awaiting carpeting and ceiling work. It has been somewhat chaotic but we can already envision the final outcome. We will soon be blessed to have all our offices in one place (including an office for our new DCE), a much larger workroom, a more accessible Parish Nurse office. This is being done by reworking our present space without sacrificing classrooms. We are thankful for the generous bequest which is making this possible. PROJECTION UPDATE We hope to be able to use the new projection system soon. We will have a larger screen which does not block the view of the altar, and separate monitors for the chapel and balcony areas. We will have a camera which will enable people in the obstructed view seats in the balcony to see. The projector will be hung so it does not have to be set up and taken down and will not be obstructed by people walking in front of it. The project is taking a little longer than we expected because when the projector was first hung, many believed that it was too low and too close to the front and would distract from our worship. It was decided to pay a little more for a projector that could be placed near the back of the church in a less distracting place. Our goal is to use modern technology in a way that serves our worship in a helpful and God pleasing way. Page 8

From The Hauan s (A full copy of their newsletter with children updates and pictures is posted on the bulletin board in the Narthex.) Vacation Bible School was loads of fun! Dear Friends Eric will be preaching his last sermon this weekend at our church s annual outdoor service at a beautiful local park called Chestnut Ridge. Our worship will take place outdoors followed by a Hauan Potluck Farewell and outside games such as washers and kickball. I am sure it will be a fun and bittersweet event. This past year here in Orchard Park has been incredible. We have been loved well and thus feel energized and taught how to love others well too. Under Pastor Nate s leadership, Eric has gotten to experience some of the joys, sorrows, and sometimes difficult parts of the ministry. Throughout it all, we have been purposefully nurtured and taught by our church staff and congregant members. We have reached out to the community and established roots for our family. Goodbyes will be difficult, but we rest assuredly that in God s kingdom, there is no goodbyes only see you laters. As always, thank you for your partnership in our ministry formation. We are extremely thankful for your encouragement. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you ever have any questions. Starting August 10 th, our new address will be: 2D Founders Way St. Louis, MO Wishing you a safe and fun remainder of your summer filled with God s blessings. Sincerely, Eric, Jill, Julia, Cal, and Hazel Hauan hauane@csl.edu (Eric) ericjillhauan@hotmail.com (Jill) Page 10

Health Notes FLU SHOT CLINIC AT REDEEMER Flu vaccinations will be administered by Brian Fisk, Pharmacist on September 20, 2015, at Redeemer Lutheran Church from 8:30 to 11:00. They will be given in the new Parish Nurse Office. A waiting area will be set up in the hallway. Insurance cards including Medicare cards should be brought to the clinic. The single best way to protect against the flu is to get vaccinated each year!!! Influenza is a serious disease that can lead to hospitalization and sometimes even death. Every flu season is different, and influenza infection can affect people differently. Even healthy people can get very sick from the flu and spread it to others. During a regular flu season, about 90 percent of deaths occur in people 65 years and older. Also the very young and disabled are especially susceptible to flu. Flu season can begin as early as October and last as late as May. Flu vaccine is meant to protect again a respiratory virus not an intestinal virus. For more information regarding the flu shot clinic contact Jan Dicke, or Iva Kietzmann, A signup sheet will be at the Welcome Center. 17 Orphan Grain Train Updates Millions fed by OGT! Orphan Grain Train is proud to announce that we shipped close to 3.5 million meals last fiscal year, which ended May 31, 2015! OGT has shipped more than 10 Million meals since we started! That is many tummies filled, bodies nourished, and hope given. Thank you for your donations that help to make this mission possible. Praise be to God! Another shipment for Nepal Nepal will soon be receiving its second shipment of humanitarian aid from Orphan Grain Train. The children and families of Nepal are still hurting and struggling from the destruction of the earthquake this past April. Norfolk warehouse is funding the transportation of this shipment out of Ohio and its final destination will be Bhaktapur, Nepal, right outside of Kathmandu. Our recipient is excited to be receiving 41,472 Kids Against Hunger meals, 72 boxes of diapers, 25 boxes of quilts, and 84 tarps. Thank you to everyone that donated to help make this shipment possible! OGT helps people in Kansas Jefferson County in North East Kansas is under a boil water order from the State Sanitation Department. The need for drinking water in Jefferson County KS was brought on by heavy rains. Contaminated runoff polluted a large reservoir that supplies several villages in the county, so residents will be required to boil their drinking water for the next 30 days. During the week of June 15th we delivered semi-trailer full of bottled water as well as a 6,000 gallon tank trailer filled with clean drinking water to Ozawkie, KS. The trailer was parked at a distribution site so that residents can fill their larger containers from the spigots on our trailer. When the trailer is empty, a local trucker will move the trailer to a fill site, then refill it and bring it back to the distribution site. This process will repeat as often as needed. This is another way that Orphan Grain Train Disaster Relief reaches out to help those who are suffering. Orphan Grain Train is accepting donations for Nepal earthquake victims Following the recent destruction and devastation caused by the earthquake that hit Nepal, Orphan Grain Train is preparing to ship relief supplies to the area and see how we can best assist in the relief effort there. As soon as we have a list of needed items, we will post it on our website, our Facebook page, and release it to local media outlets. We know this will be a costly endeavor, so if you would like to make a donation to help offset the cost, you can do so on our website, click the Donate tab. Checks can be made payable to Orphan Grain Train, marked International Disaster Fund and mailed to PO Box 1466, Norfolk, NE Thank you for your support of our ministry and helping the victims of the earthquake in Nepal.(April 2015) Page 17
