Redeemer Lutheran Church Making Him Known But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." Acts 1:8 HOLY TRINITY Thursday, May 28, :00 pm Saturday, May 30, :30 pm Sunday, May 31, :00 & 9:30 am Our Mission Statement: As Christians based on the solid foundation of God s Word, empowered by the Holy Spirit we strive to live out, lift up, and share our faith in Jesus Christ welcoming all into our family of believers. Our Theme: Each month this year we are considering how different Biblical characters made our Lord known in unique ways. During May, we remember the woman at the well who Made Him Known by sharing her story. WELCOME VISITORS We have printed out our worship service to make it easier for all of us to follow. Hymns are found in the hymn section of the Lutheran Service Book or in Worship & Praise, the purple supplement. Please visit our Welcome Center in the narthex for additional information about Redeemer. SERVICE OF PRAYER FOR HEALING will be in all services this weekend. If you would like to have the pastor and elder lay hands upon you and offer a special prayer (for yourself or a loved one), please fill out the blue insert in your bulletin and bring it forward with you as you come to commune. There is also opportunity to make use of the ancient practice of anointing with oil (James 5:14) for those who so desire. OUR THEME FOR TODAY is The Trinity in Action. Ever think about this - the story of salvation presupposes the story of the Trinity. It is the story of the Trinity that brings about the story of salvation. Therefore the Doctrine of the Trinity is an EXTREMELY PRACTICAL thing! We Come Into God s Presence (*) Those who are able are asked to stand during these parts of the Service. -1-

Crown Him with many crowns as thrones before Him fall; Crown Him, ye kings, with many crowns, for He is king of all. (LSB 525, st. 5) CHILDREN S MESSAGE (Parent s, please feel free to come forward with smaller children.) God Speaks to Us SCRIPTURE READINGS L: The Old Testament Lesson for the Holy Trinity is from the sixth chapter of Isaiah. 1 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. 3 And they were calling to one another: "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory." 4 At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke. 5 "Woe to me!" I cried. "I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty." 6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 With it he touched my mouth and said, "See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for." 8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?" -3-

And I said, "Here am I. Send me!" Isaiah 6:1-8 NIV L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. L: The Second Reading is from the second chapter of Acts. 14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: 22 "Fellow Israelites, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know. 23 This man was handed over to you by God's deliberate plan and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross. 24 But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him. 25 David said about him: "'I saw the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. 26 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest in hope, 27 because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, you will not let your holy one see decay. 28 You have made known to me the paths of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence. ' 29 "Fellow Israelites, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day. 30 But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne. 31 Seeing what was to come, he spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that he was not abandoned to the realm of the dead, nor did his body see decay. 32 God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of it. 33 Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear. 34 For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said, "'The Lord said to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand 35 until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet."' 36 "Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah." Act 2:14a, NIV L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. (Please stand to sing.) (*) RESPONSE (LSB 205) -4-

(*) GOSPEL READING P: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the third chapter. C: Glory to you, O Lord. 5 Jesus answered, "Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, 'You must be born again. ' 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit." 9 "How can this be?" Nicodemus asked. 10 "You are Israel's teacher," said Jesus, "and do you not understand these things? 11 Very truly I tell you, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. 12 I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? 13 No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven the Son of Man. 14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15 that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him." 16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. John 3:5-17 NIV L: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. (*) HYMN Holy, Holy, Holy... LSB 507 (*) ATHANASIAN CREED (LSB 319) And the catholic faith is this, that we worship one God in Trinity and Trinity in Unity, -5-

neither confusing the persons nor dividing the substance. For the Father is one person, the Son is another, and the Holy Spirit is another. But the Godhead of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit is one: the glory equal, the majesty coeternal. Such as the Father is, such is the Son, and such is the Holy Spirit: the Father uncreated, the Son uncreated, the Holy Spirit uncreated; the Father infinite, the Son infinite, the Holy Spirit infinite; the Father eternal, the Son eternal, the Holy Spirit eternal. And yet there are not three Eternals, but one Eternal, just as there are not three Uncreated or three Infinites, but one Uncreated and one Infinite. In the same way, the Father is almighty, the Son almighty, the Holy Spirit almighty; and yet there are not three Almighties, but one Almighty. So the Father is God, the Son is God, the Holy Spirit is God; and yet there are not three Gods, but one God. So the Father is Lord, the Son is Lord, the Holy Spirit is Lord; and yet there are not three Lords, but one Lord. Just as we are compelled by the Christian truth to acknowledge each distinct person as God and Lord, so also are we prohibited by the catholic religion to say that there are three Gods or Lords. The Father is not made nor created nor begotten by anyone. The Son is neither made nor created, but begotten of the Father alone. The Holy Spirit is of the Father and of the Son, neither made nor created nor begotten, but proceeding. Thus, there is one Father, not three Fathers; one Son, not three Sons; one Holy Spirit, not three Holy Spirits. And in this Trinity none is before or after another; none is greater or less than another; but the whole three persons are coeternal with each other and coequal, so that in all things, as has been stated above, the Trinity in Unity and Unity in Trinity is to be worshiped. The broken person behind the cross symbolizes the broken-ness in our lives due to our sin and imperfections. The whole person stands in front of the cross because it is only through the cross of Jesus that we are made whole. 16 Making Him Known But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." Acts 1:8 Making Him Known: By Sharing Our Stories BIBLE VERSES OF THE WEEK: God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of it. Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear. Acts 2:32 33 NIV POINTS TO PONDER THIS WEEK: Why is the Doctrine of the Trinity extremely prac cal when it comes to... 1) The task of your salva on 2) The task of saving others How does the Trinity help you be bold in your witness? Take it Home This weekend we are celebra ng Trinity Sunday in the church year. The Trinity has always been something that has confounded and confused us for years. We try different ways of explaining and understanding it but nothing quite measures up. My sugges on is that you don t. Many things in the Bible, Jesus being fully man and fully God, we cannot understand. The Trinity is among those concepts. We can grasp parts of it. Especially in the case of the Trinity we cannot lose the work that each person of the Trinity does in our salva on. However it seems like a load of our plates knowing that here on earth we cannot understand it. So we take it as Scripture presents it and hold it in paradox and know it is true because God says it is. And a beau ful thing about that is when we are brought to eternal life with God we will be able to and finally understand all those different concepts. That will be an amazing day and something we can look forward to for more reasons than just that. So as you go through your faith life know that God has things we cannot understand here but are s ll wonderfully amazing and essen al to our lives as redeemed and saved people. Hymn Notes: As we celebrate Trinity Sunday, the gradua on of students, and the sending off of our DCE Intern Brian, there are many things to be thankful for. Our founda on of faith in God as three persons; the majesty in crea on, the compassion of the Father, amazing love of the Son, and the guidance and comfort of the Spirit is what we as Chris ans live our life by. On Sunday the choir sings "Wherever You Lead I will Follow" reminds us that there are many paths in life, and we pray that God is the one leading and when we follow His ways the road is never lonely. They also sing "This Li le Light of Mine" reminding us that on the road, we are called to live our faith and share Christ's love with others. Students and Brian, may God be with you as you begin this new chapter and may His light shine through you in all that you do!
