1 Redeemer Lutheran Church Weekly Announcements and Highlights Week of Special Prayer Opportunities: Health Concerns: Larry Reinartz, LaVon Pavek, Ruth Maasch, Lowell Fahrman, Ruth DeFrang Thanksgiving: Lowell and Lorraine Fahrman who are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary on Thursday, October 7. PRAYER CHAIN Prayer is a powerful gift that is always available for us to use. If you have a prayer request, call June Hovland ( ) or Gail Sim ( ) who will activate the chain. Anyone interested in becoming a part of this prayer ministry, please contact June or Gail. PRAYER CHAIN - To request a prayer or to join the chain, send an to Lori Hameister at littlebitmoo@q.com. PRAYER CARDS - Take a look in your pew These cards will be collected by one of the pastors during the offering time. ROSES ON THE ALTAR are in honor of: Jackie Crandall who celebrated her 83rd birthday on Sunday, September 19 Steff Porter who celebrated her 75th birthday on Friday, September 24. Avis Reihl who will celebrate her 89th birthday on Monday, October 4. BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND! The wedding pictures posted on the LWML/RLCW bulletin board earlier this summer have been reposted with identification on a bulletin board in the South Fellowship Hall. Take a look! BAKELESS BAKE SALE will continue through the month of October. Envelopes can be put in the offering plate or brought to the office. If you did not receive an envelope, they are available in the narthex. We do want to THANK YOU for any amount of support you may be able to give. This is a major source of funding for the RLCW and very much appreciated. Questions, contact Sandy Weiden at THURSDAY EVENING WORSHIP will be concluding on Thursday, October 7. PORTALS OF PRAYER for October - December are now available in the narthex. CHANGING TO CELL PHONES ONLY? It seems more and more people are -- but then we do not have a way to locate your number. Please let us know your new number(s) if you go this route. NEW MEMBER RECEPTION will be Sunday, November 7. If you might like information about joining Redeemer, please speak to one of the pastors. CELEBRATING GOD S GRACE is a 10- week class which looks at the teachings of the Lutheran Church. This is for non- Lutherans thinking about joining or for Lutherans who would like to review the basics. The next class will begin on Wednesday, November 17, at 7:30 pm. 2 Polka Service Worship and Dinner Saturday, October 16-5:30 pm "Chuck Thiel and the Jolly Ramblers" will lead our music for the 5:30 pm service on Saturday, October 16. A dinner will be held following the service. The menu includes: brats, German potato salad, baked beans, etc. There will be a free-will offering for the cost of the food and the band. To assist in planning, please indicate your intention by signing up on the list in the narthex or by calling the church office at by Monday, October 11. HELP NEEDED The Polka Service dinner is becoming a well attended event (over 200 people!). We could use more help (especially younger people) in the following areas: Four people to set up tables at 1 pm on Saturday, October 16. Eight people to help serve the dinner following the worship service. Three people to help run the dishwasher. (Yes! We are going to use real dishes. Instructions and dirty dishes provided!) If you are able to help in any of these areas, please sign-up on the sheet on the counter in the ADULT BIBLE CLASSES - Sundays at 9:20 am! Bible Lands and People -Then and Now - Pastor Heining leads this class in the North Fellowship Hall. The Challenge of Islam This study is led by Pastor Settle in the South Fellowship Hall. Creation Bible Study - Beginning October 10! Check your newsletter for details and an outline of the class. Join us in the Choir Room. STARS This year the stars above will remember the beloved saints in heaven and stars on the walls will recognize the saints, our neighbors, here on earth. Please fill out the stars in the narthex for the saints in heaven during the month of October. Help would be appreciated in cutting out the stars again this year!!! (They are in the narthex to be taken home, cut out, and then returned to the Church office) 2 Week of

3 BREAK OUT! Sometimes it s comfortable to do things the same old way: buy the same brand of breakfast cereal every week, drink from a favorite coffee mug every day, snuggle into that old sweater that s a little too small. But sometimes it s good to stretch into something new. Stephen Ministry may be where God is calling you to S T R E T C H. A new training class will be starting in January. Last chance to sign up for Fellowship Tables (Tables of 8): This is NOT a gourmet group, just a way to join fellow members of Redeemer in a relaxed, social setting. Each group of 8 may be a combination of singles and couples. Suggested times for the groups to meet are October 16 or 23, January 15 and March 19, 6:30-8:30 p.m. (Date/times can be adjusted within individual groups. The date is not what is important -- the fellowship is!). Hosting dinner and providing the entrée will rotate among group members homes with the other members of the group bringing a part of the meal, such as salad, bread and dessert, and maybe a nice bottle of wine. 4 OCTOBER IS MENTAL HEALTH MONTH Whether we have experienced mental illness (such as depression) or know someone who has or had such a problem, we need to care about the issue of mental health. After all, we all have mental health. We may not think much about our mental health or even use that phrase, but it s a common element in the lives of every one of us. Mental health is perhaps best explained as how well we cope with daily life and the challenges it brings. When our mental health is good, we can deal better with what comes our way at home, at work, in life. When our mental health is poor, it can be difficult to function in our daily lives. It is a fluid, changeable state like our physical health with disability and untreated illness at one end, and recovery or complete wellness at the other end. Most of us live and move within the range of the spectrum. (WheatRidge Health notes by Maria Lichtsinn, RN, MPA, CIC, Parish Nurse) MYTH #1: Mental illnesses don t affect me. FACT: Mental illnesses are surprisingly common, and they do not discriminate. One in four adults (approximately 57.7 million Americans) experience a mental health disorder in a given year. Based on this fact, how many individuals in your congregation might be dealing with mental illness. MYTH #2: Mental illnesses are the result of character weakness. FACT: Serious mental illnesses are diseases of the brain that cause disturbances in a person s thinking, feeling, moods, and ability to relate to others. Knowing the facts about any illness helps create understanding. To learn more about mental illnesses go to (Lutheran Voice for Mental Health-a group of individuals from Minnesota South District congregations that meet under the auspices of the Lutheran Counseling Center, Burnsville, MN. Motivated by the love of Jesus Christ, we want to equip congregations with the truth about mental illness, and so provide hope for all whose lives are impacted by mental illness. For more information see: ) (Next week we ll explore Myth #3 and #4) FLU SHOTS (and FluMist) Redeemer will be offering flu shots (and FluMist while supplies last) on Sunday, October 24, from 8:30 am until 10:30 am, in the Fellowship Hall. Shots are offered for all those ages 3 and older. The cost will be $26 for the Flu Shot and $32 for the FluMist. Please bring a form of identification and any insurance cards with you including Medicare cards. There will be 55 vaccinations available -- please sign up now! 4 Week of

The corn maze is great but the chance to pet a camel, launch a pumpkin, get buried in corn, milk a cow and watch pig races makes this one amazing experience! Sign up to go! October 18 Pizza Ranch We are starting Pizza Ranch nights again in October! This is a great FUNdraiser but, it is also a time to enjoy and meet others from Redeemer! October Cardboard Box City Sign up is out! Check your calendars to see if you can make this fun event that supports a great cause! Redeemer youth have a CORNER LOT this year. Up Coming- Fall is on the way and so are some fall activities: Feed My Starving Children, Sports days and more! Keep your eyes open for more info! Interested in helping contact Kay Fockler at B.R.I.G.H.T. Night Drama! Sign up now for the B.R.I.G.H.T. Night Drama! The drama this year is a humorous and meaningful look at how we love our neighbors. The drama will be shared on November 14 during both service. There will be a sign up on the counter in the narthex. Each child that signs up will play an important role! Sign up to take part! B.R.I.G.H.T. Night is for children in grades 2-6. Sign up will close on October 13, at that time practices will be set with consideration to the actors and actress schedules. 5 Week of

6 LUTHERAN WITNESS for October is now available in the narthex. Pick one up! ROCHESTER AREA LUTHERANS FOR LIFE Instead of their regular meeting in October, they will be taking part in Life Chain on Sunday, October 3. Meet on the bike path in front of Wal-Mart South at 2:30 pm. This is designed to be a silent, but positive witness to the value of life. All are welcome. New ChristCare Group! The new Women's 20- October 13, from 8:00-9:00 pm. If you are a women in your 20's or 30's, we would love to have you come give us a try! We will be meeting the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month at my home (918 West Center Street, Rochester). If you have any questions, please call Elizabeth Hutton Men of Redeemer PREVIEW SUNDAY S SCRIPTURE READINGS Each Tuesday at 9 am, a couple dozen men of Redeemer meet to have coffee and a treat, support each other, share a bit of humor, and divide into smaller groups for discussion of the coming weeks Bible readings. All reading and discussion is voluntary and confidential. Irregular attendance is not unusual, and each Tuesday is a new lesson not based on a prepared series of lessons. If you are or know someone who would like to become more familiar with their bible and the history and teachings of the Church in a non-threatening environment, please see information and a pamphlet in the narthex or call the church office ( ) and someone will happily contact you about your interest and invite you to a trial run! HAVE YOU HEARD? The Men's Ministry at Redeemer is going to be building some Crosses on Monday, October 4, at 5:30 pm! This will be a great way for the Men's Ministry to get to know one another better and at the same time promote spreading the word to the community.
