1 From Pastor Joel Skindlov Dear sisters and brothers in Christ, February 2019 Newsletter Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it (1 Corinthians 12:27). What does this mean for us, for our congregation, how we might live in the world? As a senior in high school, I ran cross country with four other young men on the boy s team. In cross country, in order to score as a team, you need to have five runners. I was neither the fastest nor the most humorous, yet I, along with my teammates worked together, finding our gifts, looking to one another for strength, accountability, fun, and comradery. We did not always get along, we argued like siblings, we gave each other a hard time, yet we worked together to accomplish goals that were amazing! As Paul, speaks to the church in Corinth, he writes to the challenges and experience of working together as a group, as the body of Christ. Paul uses this analogy, not only as the body as all of the biological systems working together. Paul uses this analogy to reveal the body of Christ as a community, as team, a group, with various roles, responsibilities, skills, insights, and gifts that work together for the common good. Indeed the body does not consist of one member but of many. If the foot would say, Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body, that would not make it any less a part of the body.if the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. If all were a single member, where would the body be? As it is, there are many members, yet one body (1 Corinthians 12:14-15, 17-20). What might this look like for us, as the body of Christ at Prince of Peace? What does this look like as we live out God s activity in our lives, weaving together our hopes, dreams, goals, challenges, and road blocks, and detours, to see God at work in our life together? I invite us into respectful, honest, and loving conversation about our life together as the body of Christ. Honest, as we have the courage and boldness to share our perspective, our experience, and our passion! Loving, as we look to listen, look to listen, in order to hear what the person and/or people are communicating. So that, we continue to live as distinct followers of Christ, together. This does not mean we all have the same view point and perspective. It means, in part, that what we have to say and what we have to offer leads toward something greater than ourselves and what we have to offer matters. We work together toward the common good in Christ! As Paul proclaims, If one member suffers, all suffer together with it; if one member is honored, all rejoice together with it (1 Corinthians 12:26). As God in Christ continues to lead and guide us, as we continue to pray, worship, discern, and serve together, the living Christ strengthens, sustains, and persists with us, as individuals and a community. God has gifted us, as the people of Prince of Peace! Christ promises to be with us in the challenging, hard, and life giving work of being the body of Christ together. We share the light of Christ s hope and presence in our lives to one another, our community, and our world. Peace, Pastor Joel Volume 25 Issue 2
2 From The President To my brothers and sisters in Christ, I am privileged to serve as your Council President for another year. Our congregation is alive and well. Challenges face us as always, but with the help of God, we will fulfill our mission at Prince of Peace. Let us always be looking outward towards the needs of our neighbors. Make us a welcoming place for all that worship here. Make us the hands and heart of our Lord Jesus. We spread his love to the world in his name. Peace be with you all! Peace be with you! There are dates in February that are open. The cost is $20. Make your check payable to Paulla Lalley and put it in her mailbox #105. The first order of business in January was the distribution of the October Bazaar profits. Twelve organizations that benefit the local community received $4,000 from the Prince of Peace Bazaar. There is a poster in the sanctuary showing who received help. As the thank you notes arrive I will post them on the hall bulletin board. The organizations all seem very grateful for the help. Bible Study will meet February 6. Baby Quilters will meet February 12. Charity Quilters will begin work on February 26. Washington State Quilters have moved their Annual Yard Sale to the SCC student union building on April 6 from 8-11:30. We will accept your sewing related donations you don t want or need to raise funds for the quilting program. This is a special sale that comes around once a year. It is a great way to change your unwanted materials into cash to aid the quilting project. The sale is open to the public. There are amazing bargains if sewing is your hobby. Let's hope 2019 will be a great year of service and fellowship in the Prince of Peace community. Sharon Anthony Page 4
