3 ANTHEM (5:30 pm) The Glory Of The Father Sounds of Praise God Speaks to Us SCRIPTURE READINGS L: The Old Testament Reading for Christmas Eve is from Isaiah the chapter forty. 1 Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. 2 Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her hard service has been completed, that her sin has been paid for, that she has received from the Lord 's hand double for all her sins. 3 A voice of one calling: "In the wilderness prepare the way for the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. 4 Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. 5 And the glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all people will see it together. For the mouth of the Lord has spoken." Isaiah 40:1 5 NIV L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. L: The Epistle reading is from 2 Corinthians, chapter four. 13 It is written: "I believed; therefore I have spoken." Since we have that same spirit of faith, we also believe and therefore speak, 14 because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you to himself. 15 All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God. 16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. 2 Corinthians 4:13 18 NIV L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. (Please stand to sing.) (*) RESPONSE (LSB 370, st. 1) What child is this, who, laid to rest, On Mary s lap is sleeping? Whom angels greet with anthems sweet while shepherds watch are keeping? This, this is Christ the king, Whom shepherds guard and angels sing; Haste, haste to bring Him laud, The babe, the son of Mary! -3-
4 (*) THE CHRISTMAS GOSPEL P: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the first chapter. C: We want to see His glory! 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. 6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. 9 The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God. 14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:1 14 NIV P: This is the Good News of Great Joy C: We have seen His glory! (*) GOSPEL RESPONSE (LSB 370, st. 2) Why lies He in such mean estate where ox and ass are feeding? Good Christian, fear; for sinners here the silent Word is pleading. Nails, spear shall pierce Him through, the cross be borne for me, for you; Hail, hail the Word made flesh, the babe, the son of Mary! (Please be seated.) ANTHEM (3:30 pm) Sing Gloria Cherub Choir CHILDREN S MESSAGE (Parents, please feel free to come forward with small children.) HYMN Angels We Have Heard On High... LSB 368 SERMON Come and See John 1:
