Redeemer Lutheran Church Making Him Known But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." Acts 1:8 The Twelfth Sunday After Pentecost Thursday, August 13, :00 pm Saturday, August 15, :30 pm Sunday, August 16, :00 am Our Mission Statement: As Christians based on the solid foundation of God s Word, empowered by the Holy Spirit we strive to live out, lift up, and share our faith in Jesus Christ welcoming all into our family of believers. Our Theme: Each month this year we are considering how different Biblical characters made our Lord known in unique ways. In August, we remember Job, who made Him known through suffering. WELCOME VISITORS We have printed out our worship service to make it easier for all of us to follow. Hymns are found in the hymn section of the Lutheran Service Book or in Worship & Praise, the purple supplement. Please visit our Welcome Center in the narthex for additional information about Redeemer. OUR THEME FOR TODAY is Help I Need Somebody - Not Just Anybody. The blessing of our suffering is that it makes evident our need for Jesus. The one person we need more than anyone or anything WE HAVE. Lord I need you - is met with his answer "You have me!" We Come Into God s Presence (*) Those who are able are asked to stand during these parts of the service GREETINGS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS (We welcome our fellow worshipers.) HYMN Before The Throne Of God Above -1-

Before the throne of God above I have a strong and perfect plea; A great High Priest whose name is love, Who ever lives and pleads for me. My name is graven on His hands; My name is written on His heart. I know that while in heav n He stands, No tongue can bid me thence depart, No tongue can bid me thence depart. When Satan tempts me to despair And tells me of my guilt within, Upward I look and see Him there Who made an end of all my sin. Because the sinless Savior died, My sinful soul is counted free For God, the just, is satisfied To look on Him, and pardon me, To look on Him and pardon me, Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Praise the One, Risen Son of God! Behold Him there the risen Lamb My perfect spotless righteousness The great unchangeable I Am The King of Glory and of grace One with Himself I cannot die My soul is purchased by His blood My life is hid with Christ on high With Christ my Savior and my God With Christ my Savior and my God Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Praise the One, Risen Son of God! -2-

(Used with permission CCLI # ) (5:30 pm) SACRAMENT OF HOLY BAPTISM (congregation s welcome) P: In Holy Baptism, God the Father has made you a member of His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, and an heir with us of all the treasures of heaven in the one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We receive you in Jesus name as our sister in Christ, that together we might hear His Word, receive His gifts, and proclaim the praises of Him who called us out of darkness into His marvelous light. C: Amen. We welcome you in the name of the Lord. P: And you, Daisy, the Lord bless you in all your ways from this time forth and forevermore. C: Amen. (Please stand to sing.) All sing: Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; (LSB 805) Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heav nly host: Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. (*) INVOCATION, CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION (Please stand.) P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. P: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C: But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination. P: Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C: Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. P: Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. -3-

HYMN OF PRAISE (LSB 550 st. 1 & 3) Your only Son, no sin to hide, but You have sent Him from your side. To walk upon this guilty sod, and to become the Lamb of God. O Lamb of God, sweet Lamb of God, I love the holy Lamb of God! O wash me in His precious blood, my Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God. I was so lost, I should have died, but You have brought me to Your side To be led by Your staff and rod, and to be called a lamb of God. O Lamb of God, sweet Lamb of God, I love the holy Lamb of God! O wash me in His precious blood, my Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God. (*) SALUTATION AND COLLECT OF THE DAY P: The Lord be with you. P: Let us pray. Merciful Lord, cleanse and defend Your Church by the sacrifice of Christ. United with Him in Holy Baptism, give us grace to receive with thanksgiving the fruits of His redeeming work and daily follow in His way; through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. (Please be seated.) ANTHEM (8:00 am) Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing Steffi Tetzloff, trumpet God Speaks to Us SCRIPTURE READINGS L: The Old Testament Reading for Twelfth Sunday After Pentecost is from the ninth and sixteenth chapters of Job. 32 "He is not a mere mortal like me that I might answer him, that we might confront each other in court. 33 If only there were someone to mediate between us, someone to bring us together, -4-

34 someone to remove God's rod from me, so that his terror would frighten me no more. 35 Then I would speak up without fear of him, but as it now stands with me, I cannot. 18 "Earth, do not cover my blood; may my cry never be laid to rest! 19 Even now my witness is in heaven; my advocate is on high. 20 My intercessor is my friend as my eyes pour out tears to God; 21 on behalf of a man he pleads with God as one pleads for a friend. 22 "Only a few years will pass before I take the path of no return. Job 9:32-35,16:18-22 NIV L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. L: The Epistle is from the fifth chapter of Ephesians. 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God's wrath comes on those who are disobedient. 7 Therefore do not be partners with them. 8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light 9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) 10 and find out what pleases the Lord. 11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. 12 It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. 13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible and everything that is illuminated becomes a light. 14 This is why it is said: "Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you." 15 Be very careful, then, how you live not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is. 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Ephesians 5:6-21 NIV L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. (Please stand to sing.) (*) RESPONSE I cast all my cares upon you. I lay all of my burdens down at Your feet. And anytime that I don t know what to do, I will cast all my cares upon You. -5-

(*) HOLY GOSPEL P: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the sixth chapter. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world." 52 Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?" 53 Jesus said to them, "Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. 55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. 56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them. 57 Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever." 59 He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum. 60 On hearing it, many of his disciples said, "This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?" 61 Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, "Does this offend you? 62 Then what if you see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before! 63 The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you they are full of the Spirit and life. 64 Yet there are some of you who do not believe." For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him. 65 He went on to say, "This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them." 66 From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him. 67 "You do not want to leave too, do you?" Jesus asked the Twelve. 68 Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God." John 6:51-69 NIV P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. (Please be seated.) CHILDREN'S MESSAGE (Parents, please feel free to come forward with smaller children.) -6-

HYMN OF THE DAY Chorus: Lord I Need You Lord, I come, I confess. Bowing here I find my rest. And without You, I fall apart. You're the One that guides my heart. Lord, I need You, oh, I need You. Every hour I need You. My one defense, my righteousness; Oh God, how I need You. Where sin runs deep, Your grace is more. Where grace is found is where You are And where You are, Lord, I am free Holiness is Christ in me. Chorus So, teach my song to rise to You When temptation comes my way. And when I cannot stand, I'll fall on You. Jesus, You're my hope and stay. Chorus My one defense, my righteousness; Oh God, how I need You. My one defense, my righteousness; Oh God, how I need You. 8 We Respond To God s Word APOSTLES' CREED I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. (*) THE WORDS OF OUR LORD Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me. In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. 18 Making Him Known But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." Acts 1:8 Job, who Made Him Known even through suffering. BIBLE VERSES OF THE WEEK: Even now my witness is in heaven; my advocate is on high. My intercessor is my friend as my eyes pour out tears to God. Job 16:19 20 NIV POINTS TO PONDER THIS WEEK: Take It Home Praying is a huge blessing! We can talk to the Lord of the universe at all mes and bring our thanks, hurts, fears, joys and sorrows to Him. Many of us do not use this gi as much as we could. We may think we do not have the right words. We may wonder if prayer really works. We may just get busy. I would like to encourage you to pray! Remember the right words are any words you say and prayer always works! In our busy lives it may help to set up reminders to pray, an alarm on your phone, a note on the fridge, a post it on the mirror, a prayer book on the night stand. When your life is filled with prayer the difference is VERY no ceable! It is also great to remember that the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words (Romans 8:26) God has you covered! No need for fancy, detailed prayers. Prayers like, Lord Help!, Come Lord Jesus, or Thank you Jesus are acceptable prayers. In fact even the very verbose Mar n Luther has wri en about the beauty and effec veness of simple prayer. The point is, pray! What were/are your Chapter 9 moments? During my Chapter 9 moments, Jesus is....? How will Jesus use your Chapter 9 to help others through theirs?
