3 Staff Reflections Christ is Risen! He is Risen Indeed! Alleluia! What is your favorite Easter hymn? Some may say they like a particular hymn for the tune, or for the memory they have connected to it. What about the text? One text might jump out at you more because of the scriptural reference or the encouragement it may give that relates to certain life experiences. Have a little fun, page through the hymnal and pick out a favorite or a top two or three Easter hymns. Write them down and make sure to let someone know. Easter hymns are fantastic for funerals and your favorite could be sung at yours. The Easter message is the same Jesus has Risen He has conquered death. One of my favorites is Jesus Lives! The Victory s Won (LSB 490). I love the end phrase of each stanza, this shall be my confidence. I particularly like stanza 4 for the text and for the scripture it was inspired by: Jesus lives! I know full well Nothing me from Him shall sever. Neither death nor pow rs of hell Part me now from Christ forever. God will be my sure defense; This shall be my confidence. Romans 8: Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36As it is written, For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered. 37No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Reading through Easter hymns could be a great devotional time for you this Easter season. Look up the scriptural reference at the bottom of the page in the hymnal and then spend time reflecting on the text. Take time to sing through them or look them up on YouTube. Sing them all week. Memorize them. Let the text of the hymns that are built on the Word of God be on your lips and bring joy to your lives. So at the final day you may say Jesus is my confidence! - April Beckman, Director of Parish Music Church Office Hours: M-F 7:30 am-4:00 pm Phone: Fax: Blessed to Serve Pastor, James W. Michael Harvey leads this journey.

5 What do Chutes and Ladders, Rummikub, Balderdash, and Candy Land have in common? They are all fun board games played by more than one person. Everyone is invited to an intergenera onal game night of fun, food, and games for all ages. Just bring your favorite game and a snack. A light meal will be provided. Her daughter Louise (Ann Margret), educated abroad since infancy, is coming for a visit bringing her wealthy fiancé with her. She has believed Annie s a wealthy dowager. Enter Dave the Dude (Glenn Ford), a kindhearted racketeer who figures how to pass off Annie as a high-society granddame so Louise can marry her fairy-tale Prince and everyone can live happily ever after. A great Christmas classic. Anthony Adverse 1936 This Mervyn LeRoy film won four Oscars for cinematography, editing, Erich Wolfgang Korgold s original music score, and Gale Sondergaard s brilliant performance, which won her the first Best Supporting Actress Oscar ever awarded. Anthony (Fredric March) struggles to claim a rightful inheritance in spite of his illegitimate birth. He is forced to overcome the scheming of Don Luis (Claude Rains) and Faith (Sondergaard), who aim to destroy him. Adding to his misery while he is away, his beloved Angela (de Havilland) mother to his son, becomes a glamorous opera star and Napoleon s mistress. This is magnificent entertainment passionate, grand in scope and unforgettable. Don t miss it. Page 5

6 Stephen Ministry IN A NUTSHELL Stephen Ministry is Christ caring for people through people. Stephen Ministry gives congregations a practical and effective way to equip people as Stephen Ministers - lay people who share Christ s healing love with those who are hurting in the congregation. As a result: 1. People receive the care they need. (Those going through challenges in life are connected with a Stephen Minister who listens, cares, prays, and embodies Christ s presence.) 2. Lay people use their gifts in meaningful ways. (Stephen Ministers experience deep joy and tremendous growth as they see God at work in and through them to touch people s lives.) 3. Pastors no longer bear the caring ministry load alone. (They know that members are bearing one another s burdens, and deepening and expanding their congregation s caring ministry.) All three groups hurting people, Stephen Ministers, and pastors experience CHRIST CARING FOR PEOPLE through people in a tangible way. Rev. Dr. Kenneth C. 7 The following is an article that recently appeared in the St. Peter s Lutheran (Afton, Minnesota) monthly newsletter written by Redeemer member, Samantha (Carlson) Guthrie, Director of Christian Outreach, who is doing her internship this year. 5 Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him. 6 Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken. 7 My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge. 8 Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge. Psalm 62:5-8 NIV I stumbled upon Psalm 62 when I was going through a rough time. I was reading a devotion from the book, Jesus Calling, by Sarah Young, and listed at the bottom of this particular page was Psalm 62:5-6. As soon as I read it, I felt as if David (the writer of this Psalm) was speaking directly to me. It s as if God himself ensured that Dave write this down so that I would be able to read it years later. Have you ever experienced this? Have you ever read the Bible and every word you read seems to speak right to your current situation? That s what was happening to me when I first read that section. It was almost a little spooky how well it spoke to me! Like I said, these verses came to me in a difficult time, but it felt like a breath of fresh air to read them. Yes, my soul, find rest in God In difficult times, it can feel like it s impossible to truly get rest. Our hearts groan with uneasiness. Our minds are bombarded with continual thoughts like a news ticker. Even sleeping doesn t seem to quench our thirst for rest. So where can we find rest in a time like this? We find the answer in Psalm 62:5. We re reminded to...find rest in God.. because...our hope comes from him. There are many ways people try to cope in difficult times. Perhaps those ways bring comfort for a short time, but they never seem to last. That s because we won t find rest in the things of this world. Nothing can do what the Word of God can do: give true rest, bring true comfort, and instill true hop. It is in the Word that we find rest in God and it is in the Word that our hope comes from. Truly God s grace is sufficient. (2 Corinthians 12:9) God s Word never fails. Surely the entire Bible can attest to that as we read about His provision to the Israelites time and time again in the Old Testament and the fulfillment of His promises in the New Testament through Jesus. Therefore, we can trust in Him as He never fails us. Our hearts can relax as we hear, Trust in him at all times...pour out your hearts to him...god is our refuge. My prayer for all of you is that in times of difficulty, you can go to your refuge and find rest in Him. He will give you hope, peace, and all other things you need. You can trust in Him at all times. Rest easy my friend, Samantha Guthrie ALL SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES age 3 12 th grade will be meeting to sing together!! I m thrilled! 9 Hauan Update (Please note their entire letter with pictures is posted on the bulletin in the Narthex or online via the link on the Redeemer website.) Call day is April 26! Best Practices in Ministry Recap Thank you Redeemer for giving the opportunity for staff and leaders from this church to take part in the Best Practices for Ministry Conference. Being with mission-minded LCMS members is a remarkable blessing. This group came back encouraged for ministry and excited to use this experience to bless this congregation. Everyone in this picture would love to share stories from this conference with you, and encourage you in what God has prepared in advance for you to do! Feedback from Jan Dicke: My favorite was the session called, Starting Health Ministry/Parish Nursing in Your Congregation. I was able to share Redeemer s extraordinary health program and was able to learn pointers from other leaders none of whom had Health Cabinets in their churches. They were so bogged down in the logistics of forming the ministry. On a fun side note, Mark s (our son) college roommate s wife was a part of the group. In another session, three pastors talked of their physical and mental health problems that occurred as they cared for others (burnout). It is important for all of us, including our super staff, to live balanced lives-- physically, emotionally, spiritually, and financially. In caring for each other, we MUST first take care of ourselves. February 2016 Eric s winter quarter is officially wrapped up and he is in the midst of his two week break before his final spring quarter begins on March 7 th. As usual, his verbal report of the quarter is easily and succinctly summed up as I enjoyed the classes and I enjoyed my professors. He s been working very hard while maintaining excellent grades. Next quarter, he will be taking Exodus and the Torah, Man & Woman in Christ, Systematics IV, and Biblical theology. Just earlier today his books came in for his upcoming classes which set the record for the most books ever required in one single quarter: 25. Needless to say, he will be taking in as much as he possibly can this last and final quarter. In just a couple of days (Saturday, February 27 th ) I ll be taking off on the one-week long mission trip to Guatemala. Your prayers, support, and well-wishes continue to be so very appreciated! One thing I truly appreciate about Groundwork Guatemala is that they raise up local men and women to be leaders in their organization. We re going down there to provide several VBS programs for the vast number of people who turn out for their events. If you would like to follow my team next week, the blog address is: (This stands for Concordia St. Louis in Guatemala.) We hope to update the blog daily. We continue to be so thankful for your love, support, and encouragement. We know this last quarter will fly by quickly but we are being intentional about slowing down to enjoy this unique community that we have grown to love over these past four years. God has richly blessed our family and we re so thankful you can be a part of it with us. 10 In Loving Memory... DONNA SCHWERMAN Donna was born May 12, 1934, in New England, North Dakota, to Edmund and Dora Strehlow. God made her his own through the washing of baptism on June 10, 1934, at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in New England. She gave witness to her baptismal faith in the rite of confirmation at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Rochester on May 16, Donna and Earl Schwerman were married at Redeemer on November 5, Their marriage was blessed with four daughters: Debbie, Tammy, Lori, and Jamie. Donna served her Lord at Redeemer in many ways: as a member of the choir, a Stephen Minister, RLCW, LWML, and Rebecca Circle. After struggling with Alzheimer's for several years, Donna received the crown of eternal life on February 19, 2016, at the age of 81. The service in her memory was conducted by Pastor Heining at Madonna Towers on February 24. Remember Earl and his family in your prayers. Notes of Thanks... Thank You Thank you so much for the nice things you do. The poinsettia at Christmas and the Valentine from Mary Hanley and now the God Love hanger and especially the lovely handmade Valentine from Lydia. It is very beautiful thank you Lydia! I appreciate all these gestures of kindness to cheer me up. I am 93 years old and don t get out much except to church. God bless you all! - Betty Renstrom Thank You Many thanks for your gift and greetings. Redeemer is the best! God s blessing to you all! - Helen Lenz Thank You We want to thank you for your prayers, cards, and support we have received in the recent loss of our son, Philip J. Meyer. During his journey with ALS, we felt much love and support as well. We Thank you. - Bob and Karen Meyer Page 10 Thank You Rebecca Circle would like to express a BIG THANKS for all of the generous donations of food, crafts, plants, etc., and to all who purchased those items during their Craft and Bake Sale on March The response was overwhelming, and we will donate to many mission and other church projects. Thank You I want to thank Pastor Koglin and Jan Dicke for visiting me in the hospital in January and Pastors Heining and Koglin for visiting me in the hospital in February. Thank you to everyone for their prayers, sending cards and asking my family how I m doing. It was a daily struggle with sugar levels in the critical danger zone and no amount of insulin was bringing it down. Thankfully, we found out what was wrong and it was an easy fix. God answered my prayers of putting a spark back in my eyes and having someone figure out what was wrong. I am truly blessed to be part of a caring family here at Redeemer. - Sherrill VanGuilder Thank You I would like to thank the Redeemer congregation and Pastors for their prayers and visits while I was recuperating. I also want to thank our Parish Nurses and the Health Cabinet for all the work they do being able to borrow medical equipment when we need it is a blessing. - Tom Moore
