869 7 th Avenue SE Rochester, MN Redeemer Lutheran Church The Third Sunday After Pentecost Bring i Home Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you. Luke 8:39 Thursday, June 26, :00 pm Saturday, June 28, :30 pm Sunday, June 29, :00 & 9:30 am Our Mission Statement: As Christians based on the solid foundation of God s Word, empowered by the Holy Spirit we strive to live out, lift up, and share our faith in Jesus Christ welcoming all into our family of believers. Goal: We will challenge each individual and each group in the congregation to grow in living out, lifting up, and sharing their faith in Jesus Christ. WELCOME VISITORS We have printed out our worship service to make it easier for all of us to follow. Hymns are found in the hymn section of the Lutheran Service Book or in Worship & Praise, the purple supplement. Please visit our Welcome Center in the narthex for additional information about Redeemer. SERVICE OF PRAYER FOR HEALING will be in all services this weekend. If you would like to have the pastor and elder lay hands upon you and offer a special prayer (for yourself or a loved one), please fill out the blue insert in your bulletin and bring it forward with you as you come to commune. There is also opportunity to make use of the ancient practice of anointing with oil (James 5:14) for those who so desire. OUR THEME FOR TODAY is "Law Abiding Christians". God's law is simply His will for your life and, therefore, is GOOD. How do you not only confess this truth but live it? Remember we abide in His law not to save ourselves but to be ourselves! A SERVICE OF PRAYER FOR HEALING WITH HOLY COMMUNION (*) Those who are able are asked to stand during these parts of the Service. GREETINGS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS (We welcome our fellow worshipers.) -1-

869 7 th Avenue SE Rochester, MN OPENING HYMN May We Thy Precepts, Lord, Fulfill... LSB 698 (*) GREETING AND SALUTATION (Please stand.) P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: And also with you. P: We gather to hear the Word of God, receive his body and blood, pray for those in need, and ask God s blessing on those who seek healing and wholeness through Christ our Lord. Let us pray. (*) CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION P: Our help is in the name of the Lord, C: who made heaven and earth. P: I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord, C: and You forgave the iniquity of my sin. P: O almighty God, merciful Father, C: I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being. P: Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. (*) RESPONSE (LSB 589, st.3) Lord, Your words are waters living When my thirsting spirit pleads. Lord, Your words are bread life-giving; On Your words my spirit feeds. Lord, Your words will be my light Through death s cold and dreary night; Yes, they are my sword prevailing And my cup of joy unfailing! -2-

869 7 th Avenue SE Rochester, MN (*) PRAYER OF THE DAY P: Great God our healer, by your power the Lord Jesus healed the sick and gave hope to the hopeless. As we gather in his name, C: look upon us with mercy and bless us with your healing Spirit. P: Bring us comfort in the midst of pain, strength to transform our weakness, C: and light to illuminate our darkness. P: We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, C: our crucified and risen Lord, P: who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. (Please be seated.) SCRIPTURE READINGS L: The Old Testament Lesson for Third Sunday After Pentecost is from Jeremiah chapter twenty-eight. 5 Then the prophet Jeremiah replied to the prophet Hananiah before the priests and all the people who were standing in the house of the Lord. 6 He said, "Amen! May the Lord do so! May the Lord fulfill the words you have prophesied by bringing the articles of the Lord 's house and all the exiles back to this place from Babylon. 7 Nevertheless, listen to what I have to say in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people: 8 From early times the prophets who preceded you and me have prophesied war, disaster and plague against many countries and great kingdoms. 9 But the prophet who prophesies peace will be recognized as one truly sent by the Lord only if his prediction comes true." Jeremiah 28:5-9 NIV L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. EPISTLE READING L: The Epistle Reading is from Romans chapter seven. 7 What shall we say, then? Is the law sinful? Certainly not! Nevertheless, I would not have known what sin was had it not been for the law. For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, "You shall not covet." 8 But sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, produced in me every kind of coveting. For apart from the law, sin was dead. 9 Once I was alive apart from the law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died. 10 I found that the very commandment that was intended to bring life actually brought death. 11 For sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, deceived me, and through the commandment put me to death. 12 So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous and good. -3-

869 7 th Avenue SE Rochester, MN Did that which is good, then, become death to me? By no means! Nevertheless, in order that sin might be recognized as sin, it used what is good to bring about my death, so that through the commandment sin might become utterly sinful. Romans 7:7-13 NIV L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. (Please stand to sing.) (*) RESPONSE (tune LSB 912) God in his righteousness sent Christ, Who for us died and rose again, To bless all who are justified. Alleluia! Where grace abounds, God s praise resounds. Alleluia! (*) GOSPEL READING P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the tenth chapter. C: Glory to you, O Lord. 32 "Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. 33 But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven. 34 "Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to turn "'a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter- in- law against her mother- in- law 36 a man's enemies will be the members of his own household. ' 37 "Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it. 40 "Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. 41 Whoever welcomes a prophet as a prophet will receive a prophet's reward, and whoever welcomes a righteous person as a righteous person will receive a righteous person's reward. 42 And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward." Matthew 10:34-42 NIV L: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. (Please be seated.) CHILDREN S MESSAGE (Parent s, please feel free to come forward with smaller children.) -4-

However, if they do not know you are a Christian they will never know they have the opportunity to talk with you. Let people know in a natural and easygoing way that you are a Christian and do not mentally censor your Christianity out of your conversations. If someone asks you what you did over the weekend/last night say, I attended a Christ Care group with others my age/i gardened, relaxed and attended church at Redeemer/I did a service project with my church Even little information like this puts God on the table and gives the opportunity for someone to inquire! 11 Fireworks Safety Are you getting ready to launch some sizzle and fizzle fireworks on the Fourth of July? According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, there were an estimated 9,600 fireworks-related injuries during the Fourth of July season in Most of these injuries would not have occurred if the fireworks had been used under closer adult supervision and if some basic safety steps had been taken. The National Council on Fireworks Safety offers these common sense tips for using consumer fireworks: Always purchase fireworks from a reliable source. Use fireworks as directed on consumer product safety label; never alter products. Observe local laws and use good COMMON SENSE. A responsible ADULT should supervise all fireworks activities. Parents should not allow young children to handle or use fireworks. Alcohol and fireworks do not mix. Use fireworks outdoors, away from buildings and vehicles. Never carry fireworks in your POCKET. Wear safety glasses whenever using fireworks. Always have water ready if you are shooting fireworks. Do not experiment with homemade fireworks. Never relight a dud firework. Wait 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water. Soak spent fireworks with water before placing then in an outdoor trash can. If fireworks are part of your plan for the Fourth of July, don t become a statistic. Put safety first. MOVIE NIGHT *JULY 11, 2014* *Note Date Change* Incorrect in other publications JESSE JAMES THE WOMEN Feel free to bring your lawn chair, blanket, and slippers as we relax and enjoy the movies. 13 Bring i Home Jesus sent him away, saying, Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you. And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him. Luke 8:38b-39 BIBLE VERSE OF THE WEEK: (for memorization or reflection) 12 So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous and good. Romans 7:12 POINTS TO PONDER THIS WEEK: Since God s law is His will, for my life I will: 1. Let it function as a curb by 2. Let it function as a mirror by 3. Let it function as a guide by... Hymn of the Month: In Latin, Sanctus means holy. Where in our service is the Sanctus? In the Service of Sacrament, the communion preparation portion, we find the Sanctus. The spoken and musical liturgical responses in our Divine Services all come from the Bible! Isn t that wonderful?!? We get to be surrounded in God s Word throughout the service. The Sanctus comes from Isaiah 6:3 when the seraphim surround the throne saying Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory! and from Matthew 21:9 - And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, Hosanna (save us now) to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest! By singing this hymn, we participate in the heavenly chorus. For a time, the division between heaven and earth is gone and we all stand together around the throne of God! As we conclude the month on LSB 507 Holy, Holy, Holy today let s stretch to memorize the Sanctus. Maybe you can already sing it with your eyes closed, but let me encourage you to then think about it a little more. Let your mind visualize the angels and the saints of every age as we sing together to the Lamb who was slain. LSB Holy, holy, holy Lord God of Sabaoth; heav'n and earth are full of Thy glory. Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He, blessed is He, blessed is He that cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest. Other Sanctus versions are found on: LSB 161, 178, 208, 960, 961.
