2 Redeemer Lutheran Church th Avenue SE Rochester, MN (*) OPENING PRAYER HYMN Come Unto Me, Ye Weary... LSB 684 (*) CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION (Please stand.) P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. P: Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. Our help is in the name of the Lord, C: who made heaven and earth. P: I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord, C: and You forgave the iniquity of my sin. Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self examination. P: O almighty God, merciful Father, C: I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being. P: Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. (Please be seated.) 3 Redeemer Lutheran Church th Avenue SE Rochester, MN "The days are coming," declares the Lord, "when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah. 32 It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to them," declares the Lord. 33 "This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time," declares the Lord. "I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 34 No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, 'Know the Lord, ' because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest," declares the Lord. "For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more." Jeremiah 31:31 34 NIV L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. L: The Epistle is from Hebrews chapter five. 1 Every high priest is selected from among the people and is appointed to represent the people in matters related to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. 2 He is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and are going astray, since he himself is subject to weakness. 3 This is why he has to offer sacrifices for his own sins, as well as for the sins of the people. 4 And no one takes this honor on himself, but he receives it when called by God, just as Aaron was. 5 In the same way, Christ did not take on himself the glory of becoming a high priest. But God said to him, "You are my Son; today I have become your Father." 6 And he says in another place, You are a priest forever, in the order of melchizedek." 7 During the days of Jesus' life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. 8 Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered 9 and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him 10 and was designated by God to be high priest in the order of Melchizedek. Hebrews 5:1 10 NIV L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. (Please stand to sing.) (*) RESPONSE Grace and life eternal in that blood I find; Bless be His compassion, infinitely kind! (LSB 433, st. 2) -3-

4 Redeemer Lutheran Church th Avenue SE Rochester, MN (*) HOLY GOSPEL L: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the tenth chapter. 35 Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. "Teacher," they said, "we want you to do for us whatever we ask." 36 "What do you want me to do for you?" he asked. 37 They replied, "Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory." 38 "You don't know what you are asking," Jesus said. "Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?" 39 "We can," they answered. Jesus said to them, "You will drink the cup I drink and be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with, 40 but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared." 41 When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and John. 42 Jesus called them together and said, "You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 43 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." Mark 10:35 45 NIV L: This is the Gospel of the Lord. (Please be seated.) CHILDREN S MESSAGE (Parents, please feel free to come forward with smaller children.) HYMN Lord, I Need You Lord I come I confess. Bowing here I find my rest. And without You I fall apart. You're the one that guides my heart. -4-

13 MENTAL ILLNESS AND THE CHURCH Mental illness invites our a en on as brothers and sisters in the body of Christ. The story of mental illness has many names, but it is always about people in pain. Although we may think that our family or church family are not affected by mental health struggles, we all are in one way or another at some me in our life. Nearly 1 in 5 individuals in the U.S. experience mental illness. There are 200 forms of mental illness, with the most recognized ones being anxiety and panic disorders, bipolar disorder, depression, ea ng disorders, schizophrenia and substance abuse and addic on. Those suffering from mental illness must hear that He who restores their body, mind and spirit forgives their sins. They too must be welcomed and included in the blessings and fellowship of His church. It reminds us that there are congrega onal members who may be hiding or hovering in the back of the church with heavy hearts. Do you know what to say if a friend or coworker is struggling? The speaker gave us a referral formula: 1) so glad you shared; 2) response of empathy; 3) presenta on of hope; 4) have you considered; 6) what do you think?
