1 The monthly newsletter of Redeemer Lutheran Church-Rochester, Minnesota Simeon: Making Him Known In Our Daily Lives November 2014 Mission Statement We read of Simeon in Luke 2: We do not know much about him, except that he had been quietly wai ng to see the Messiah, and now felt that he could die in peace. Beginning with All Saints worship, we will li up all those who have served (and con nue to serve) in quiet ways. They may not make the headlines, but they serve as ongoing examples of faithfulness. Because of such saints, we have a solid congrega on that has a beau ful facility in which to worship. We give thanks for all of you who con nue to serve as the backbone of our congrega on. 2 Redeemer Rummage Sale is a Success! The 2014 Annual Fall Rummage Sale was held September 19/20 at Redeemer. Organized by Sarah Circle with help from the members of the congregation, the sale was a HUGE success. The success comes from those who brought donations; purchased items; and from the many workers who spent hours prior, during, and after the sale. The proceeds, $4,976, have been dedicated to Redeemer for Kitchen upgrades. Page

3 Staff Reflections Dear friends, As we move into the third month of our Making Him known theme, we see that we can do this in many different ways. As Dorcas, some will make our Lord known through acts of loving service. Elijah, Daniel and various prophets reminded us that some make Him known as we speak God s Word to our contemporary society. As we move into the month of November, we will learn more of Simeon, the faithful saint who gave thanks for the baby Jesus in the temple. It is just such faithful saints that we will be remembering on All Saints Day. We will have suspended above us the names of those (living and dead) who have influenced us in our walk with the Lord. They may not be famous in the eyes of the world, but they are precious to those of us who continue to be sustained by their legacy of faith. November is also the month in which we make our annual stewardship financial commitments. I am thankful that we do not have rich members who can support the church for us all. It is up to us regular people, who give in response to the blessings we have received. We experience the joy of giving and being a part of this fellowship. Watch for a letter from our Stewardship Ministry Team. I hope you are already seeing that there are many ways of making our Lord known. We have been given different gifts, and together we are stronger than any one of us would be alone. There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work. 5 Take Note...Upcoming Events! FAITH STORY RETREAT This past Spring more than 20 people gathered to write their Faith Stories. The day started with a general wonderment of what was going to happen. By the end, every person was amazed at how richly God had blessed them and how exciting their Faith Story was! We will be offering another opportunity for people to unwrap their Faith Story. On November 15 we will again gather a group of no more than 25 people in room 201. We will start at 9 am and go until 2 pm. Lunch will be provided. This time due to building usage we may need to bring in box lunches and ask for a donation toward that expense. All other materials will be covered. A signup sheet can be found at the Welcome Center. FOR THOSE THAT WERE AT THE LAST EVENT!!! You may want to or are invited to join us on this day to spend a little more time on your Faith Story. We will have extra space if you would like to join us! Christmas Memories Advent Devo onal Before we know it Christmas will be here! The Family Ministry team is looking for people to write an Advent devotional based on their Christmas memories, so that during December, they can make available to the congregation a special booklet that will tie in to December s theme of Making Him Known to the Next Generation. Sometimes we forget that our children and grandchildren don t have the same experiences that we did growing up, and sharing some of these memories through a devotion will make sure that they won t be forgotten, but will be passed down to the next generation. Please consider signing up to do one of these devotions so that your personal memories don t get lost. The signup sheet and a handout showing a possible suggested format for the devotion are located at the Welcome Center. The written devotions need to be returned to church by November 17 so the booklet can be assembled and printed in a timely manner. Please help us to keep the legacy of our faith continuing on. Movie Night Join us on Friday, November 7, at 6 pm in the South Fellowship Hall for the following movies. Feel free to come in your slippers, bring a snack, or some change for the pop machine and pizza. They are corrupted and want to stay in Paris. Special envoy Ninotchka (Greta Garbo) is sent to see that the sale goes through but falls in love with the West and a Count. The film was banned in the Soviet Union and its satellites but still made a lot of money. MADAME X 1966 A lower-class woman marries into a rich family. Her mother -in-law looks down on her and blackmails her into disappearing into a planned boat trip, leaving her husband and young son thinking she has died. She slowly sinks into depravity all over the world but ends up back in America. She shoots a man who wants to expose her to her family, is arrested and refuses to reveal her identity and is defended by her long-lost son. Page 5

6 Making Him Known by Faithful Giving is our Stewardship theme this year. On All Saints Sunday, we will remember and give thanks for the many who have gone before and continue to inspire us as we remember their faithful service to the Lord. Watch for a special mailing the week of November 3 that will contain your 2015 Stewardship materials. You will be asked to prayerfully consider your financial commitment to the Lord s work for 2015, and return the forms to worship the next weekend. No one is required to do this but it helps your congregation with ministry planning and most find it helpful to set a goal for their giving. Once again, we will focus on the time and talents portion of our stewardship lives during Lent. This is just as important as our financial giving. 8 Notes of Thanks... Thank You To John Brandt and Virgil Briske who once again kept our lawn in wonderful condition during the summer months (and spring and fall). Only nasty weather could delay their Thursday morning routine of prepping the grounds for the weekend worship services. Thank You Many thanks to those who sent cards and memorials, or gave hugs and words of comfort upon the death of my mom on September 9. Her death was so completely unexpected that I was not ready to lose her. I do know that my mom was ready for heaven though and I look forward to seeing her there someday. Memorials were given to St. John s Lutheran Church in Plato, the church she attended her whole married life, or to various Redeemer funds as designated. Thank you also to all who have been praying for my dad as he adjusts to her passing and recovers from his recent surgery. 12 From the Hauan s Here are some excerpts from the Hauan s newsletter. The full newsletter and PICTURES are available on our website ( and are also posted on the bulletin board. As we write this update, we are surrounded by beautiful fall foliage here in western New York. Eric continues to really enjoy his experience at our vicarage church. Each week he continues to grow in his preaching, teaching, and administrative responsibilities. He is thriving in this healthy church environment we are so thankful to the kind people here at St. John s in Orchard Park. He has preached a couple more sermons, continues to help with liturgy, and is also currently teaching an ongoing adult Sunday school class on Jonah. I (Jill) continue to manage our family s schedules and am starting to help substitute for Sunday school. I also participate in a small group Bible study with other women from St. John s. I have really come to appreciate the small town vibe that Orchard Park provides and have enjoyed meeting friendly people wherever we go. Our area of New York feels very much like the Midwest such a welcomed pleasant surprise since moving here. We humbly thank you for all for your support, well wishes, phone calls, s, cards, and prayers for our vicarage placement and upcoming year in New York. You are a part of our journey here and for that we continue to be extremely grateful. 13 Music Notes by April Beckman, DPM CHOIR ROBE UPDATE - Our old robes are still serving congregations! The adult robes were split, half going to Mount Moriah in Byron and the other half to POBLO as they met needs of a Christian Somali and Iraqi congregation. The children s robes are now being worn by Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church children s choirs. Praise the Lord that we could help other congregations in their music ministries! Sunday school grades 1-5 will be sharing a song in worship on November 2 at the 10:40 service. Special thanks to teachers for sharing their class time to sing! We can look forward to them singing!! Sunday school grades 6-12 will be sharing music in worship on November 16 at the 10:40 service. A couple of things to check out... BEST PRACTICES OF MINISTRY CONFERENCE Will be in Phoenix, Arizona, on February 26-28, Pastor Heining and Koglin have taken turns attending this inspirational conference the last three years. While originally geared toward church workers, as it grows, more and more lay leaders are attending as well. Through the generosity of several churches and individuals the conference is offered at no charge (even meals are provided!). Attendees are responsible for their transportation to Phoenix and their motel rooms. To encourage attendance the Church Council has authorized scholarships of up to $400 each from the Thrivent Choice funds. More details will soon be available at or speak to one of the pastors if you are interested in attending. AN INTERESTING ARTICLE Did you notice the article in the Post Bulletin on October 11 entitled, Average Giving in County: $3,094. This worked out to about 3.07% of income. What the writer found to be of particular interest was that those with smaller incomes were the most generous! While those with higher incomes gave more actual dollars, those with smaller incomes gave a higher percentage of their incomes. This is the widows mite at work! May those of us with larger incomes be inspired by the generosity of those of more modest incomes. SPECIAL GUEST SPEAKER Rev. Dr. Jim Lamb, Director of Lutherans for Life, will be speaking at St. John's Lutheran Church in Stewartville on Sunday, November 2. In addition to preaching at the congregation's morning worship services, he will also give an hourlong presentation on stem cells and in vitro fertilization at 9:15am. In the afternoon, from 2-4pm, Dr. Lamb will give a presentation titled, The Other End of Life: Theological and Practical Aspects of End of Life Issues. Among many other things, he will discuss feeding tubes, treatments, advance directives, etc. There will also be time for questions and answers. Refreshments will be served. The Rochester chapter of Lutherans for Life joins St. John's in sponsoring the programs. St. John's is located at 111 2nd Ave. NE in Stewartville. Everyone is welcome. Page 13

For the first half of the year, all Sunday school offerings will go toward food and uniform assistance for the children of Ntshongweni. Without uniforms kids cannot go to school and benefit from much needed education. Without food or with little to no food, life is hard to impossible! All this aid is given in the name of Jesus Christ, and God s Word is preached to these children. The second half of the year a local mission will be selected. FINANCIAL UPDATE September Budget Income: $68,573 YTD Budget Income: $714,714 September Budget Expenses: $79,451 YTD Budget Expense: $723,314 After doing well during the summer, our offerings slipped during September. We never know what is going to happen! But we have confidence that the same God who loved us enough to give us His Son, will provide for our financial needs as well. We give thank for all God s faithful servants. 15 Creation Corner We need your help with a couple of items...if you have any contacts 1. If you have any contacts in the science department of a university or college in the area...let me know. I have talked with Brian Young and he has agreed to debate the topic CREATION vs EVOLUTION if we can find someone for him to debate. We would then have a creation conference the weekend after a Friday night debate. 2. We would like to find someone or some group of folks that do wood working as a hobby or profession and would be interested in making a Noah's Ark to scale...that we could use in Sunday School classrooms and also have on display in the narthex. We are working on some other ideas in this regard too...stay tuned. Please let me know if you can help with either one of these requests by at jvanproosdy@yahoo.com, or talk to me when you see me on Sunday. Pray for the persecuted church Pray for boldness to always be ready to give an account to the hope that is in you!!! Pray for the 70% of kids that walk away from churches each year when they leave high school!!! (The number one reason is they doubt Genesis.) We have our work cut out for us...so let's press on toward the mark. John Van Proosdy (Creation Team) Health Notes A Health Note on the Spiritual Side The Wholeness Wheel poster that occasionally makes its way to the bulletin board by the Parish Nurse Office reminds us that we are one being, but many parts. Surrounding all that we are: an intellectual being, vocational being, financial being, physical being, and emotional being, is the all-encompassing spiritual being. As a spiritual being, we are reminded of the multitude of blessings that we have to thank our Lord for. Each new day is a gift from God. With each sunrise we celebrate anew the gifts of God s leading in our decisions, His patience in our struggles, His forgiveness in our failures, His abiding presence in our distresses. Each dawning is an occasion to celebrate God s abundant blessings of protection and provision - the dews of heaven! We are also reminded that the greatest focus for our thanksgiving is the Cross of Christ. Not a symbol, but a promise (of our salvation); not something that was, but a hope that is (eternity with Him if we remain faithful!) What are you thankful for this Thanksgiving? As we approach the holiday, we are reminded that Thanksgiving is not just a day, it s an attitude; it s not only a holiday, it s a lifestyle! Let s commit to take time daily to approach the Throne of Grace and express our gratitude for the gifts He showers upon us. May we also commit to Make Him Known to others by sharing with them what our Lord has done for us. From the Health Cabinet and Parish Nurse Office, Thank You to all who have shared in our ministry during this past year. Your time and gift of service is greatly appreciated. From Redeemer s Health Cabinet and Parish Nurse Office Happy Thanksgiving to all! Mark your calendar Sunday, November 16 someone from Elder Network will be facilitating discussion at one of the educational opportunities in the Fellowship Hall. If you are a caregiver or know someone who is elderly and in need of care, you will not want to miss this discussion, and learn more about the opportunities that Elder Network plans to provide at Redeemer. Elder Network is a non-profit organization that has been helping older adults since They continue to empower seniors and their families to adjust to life s transitions; to live life as fully, safely, and independently as possible in their chosen environment by offering such services as friendly visiting, transportation, caregiver support, education, companion services and peer support. 19 F T Make Him Known during dinner! Meet new people! Make new friends! Fellowship Tables (Tables of 8) : Join us for a fun way to meet fellow adult members of Redeemer in a relaxed, social setting. This is NOT a gourmet group, just a way to make new friends in the church. If you have mentored a new member this year, invite them to join with you, and we will place you together. Each group of 8 may be a combination of singles and couples, and will be randomly drawn from all who sign up. Each group will meet 3 times during the year, (for example: November, January and March, 6:30-8:30 p.m.) However, your schedule is completely up to you and your group plan whatever works best for you! Hosting dinner and providing the entrée will rotate among group members homes with the other members of the group bringing a part of the meal, such as salad, bread, or dessert, and/or maybe a nice bottle of wine. A designated group coordinator will host the first meal, call each member/couple, and coordinate the other dishes to bring. You may indicate your willingness to coordinate on the sign up sheet found at the Welcome Center in the Narthex or in the weekly bulletin. Group assignments, with instructions, will be mailed at the beginning of November. Just want to take part in something fun and meet some new people, complete a sign up in the weekly bulletin and drop it in the offering plate. Questions? 23 ROCHESTER CENTRAL LUTHERAN SCHOOL AVENUE NW, ROCHESTER, MINNESOTA Principal s Page -Mrs. Suzanne Lagerwaard Our school year is off to a great start. Highlights from September and October: We began the year with 300 students in Preschool through 8 th grade. RCLS joined Pastor Haak of Trinity Lutheran Church in the Ice Bucket Challenge during the month of September to support ALS. RCLS raised $ which was sent to RCLS alumnus Pastor Philip Meyer of St. John s Lutheran in Buffalo, MN who was diagnosed with ALS earlier this year. The Cross Country and Soccer Teams had an excellent fall season. Grades 1-8 completed the first NWEA online assessment of their learning progress. Well over 200 VIPs spent a beautiful morning with us on October 10. The fall play: No Place Like Nowhere was a success, providing much laughter and fun. Our technology grew to such an extent that we have enough laptops, allowing us to close the stationary computer lab. We are now integrating technology within all of our classrooms. The RCLS faculty attended the MN Lutheran Education Conference in Mankato, MN on October 16. This was an opportunity to connect with other Lutheran educators and experience excellent staff development sessions. We hosted the Hallelujah Carnival on October 25 celebrating with many of our families and neighbors. Grade five traveled to Camp Omega for two nights and three days. A spiritually enriching, team building experience was enjoyed by all. Looking ahead: The end of the first quarter is on November 6. RCLS will host the Conference Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, November 8 beginning at 9:00 am. The RCLS Concert Band will perform at Holy Cross Lutheran Church on Sunday, November 16 at 9:30 am.
