869 7 th Avenue SE Rochester, MN Redeemer Lutheran Church Our Sure Foundation No one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 3:11 Grow In Christ Share His Love Encourage The Thirteenth Sunday After Pentecost Thursday, August 11, :00 pm Saturday, August 13, :30 pm Sunday, August 14, :00 am Our Mission Statement: As Christians based on the solid foundation of God s Word, empowered by the Holy Spirit we strive to live out, lift up, and share our faith in Jesus Christ welcoming all into our family of believers. Hymns are found in the hymn section of the Lutheran Service Book or in Worship & Praise, the purple supplement. The service is also projected on the screen. Please visit our Welcome Center in the narthex for additional information about Redeemer. OUR THEME FOR TODAY is Overflowing Love based on Psalm 42. PRELUDE GREETINGS and ANNOUNCEMENTS (We welcome our fellow worshipers.) (*) OPENING PRAYER HYMN Lord, Whose Love Through Humble Service... LSB

869 7 th Avenue SE Rochester, MN (*) THE INVOCATION (Please stand.) P: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. C: We have come to worship You, Father, who creates all life. We have come to worship You, Lord Jesus, our Savior, who won for us new life by the forgiveness of our sins. We have come to worship You, Holy Spirit, who made us alive in Christ to worship You and love our neighbor. P: We worship You for all You are and for all You do and have done for us. C: Grant that we may learn to love You more deeply, and to love others as You have loved us. P: Our great God, Father, Son, and Spirit, we honor and praise You, now and forever. All: "Let us make a joyful noise to Him with songs of praise." All sing: Majesty, worship His majesty. (W&P #94) Unto Jesus be all glory, honor and praise. Majesty, kingdom authority, flow from His throne, Unto His own; His anthem raise! So exalt, lift up on high the name of Jesus. Magnify, come glorify Christ Jesus, the King. Majesty, worship His majesty; Jesus who died, now glorified, King of all kings. (*) CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS P: Heavenly Father, we come before you as Your own dear children. We confess our sins to You, and we ask You to forgive us for Jesus s sake. C: Heavenly Father, by nature we are dead in sin. In our sinfulness, we don t have the power to learn of Your love for us and to grow in faith toward You. In our sinfulness, we often fail to love others and ourselves as persons created in Your image and redeemed by Your Son. We often use others rather than supporting them in love. We are truly sorry for our sins. P: Heavenly Father, we ask You to listen as we in our hearts confess our sins to You, especially those sins of lovelessness toward You and toward those around us. Hear each of us now. And forgive us for Jesus sake. (Silently tell God your sins. Be assured that He hears your personal confession.) P: We have been blessed! God, our Heavenly Father, loves us and promises to forgive us. He sent His Son Jesus to take all our sins with Him when He died on the cross. God gives us new life in Christ through His resurrection from the dead. I have Good News for each of you! Our gracious God forgives all your sins for Jesus sake. -2-

869 7 th Avenue SE Rochester, MN (*) HYMN OF PRAISE (LSB 545, st. 1) Word of God, come down on earth, Living rain from heav n descending; Touch our hearts and bring to birth Faith and hope and love unending. Word almighty, we revere You; Word made flesh, we long to hear You. (*) PRAYER OF THE DAY P: The Lord be with you C: And also with you. P: Let us pray O King of glory, Lord of hosts, uplifted in triumph far above all heavens, leave us not without consolation but send us the Spirit of truth whom You promised from the Father; for You live and reign with Him and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. (Please be seated.) God Speaks to Us SCRIPTURE READINGS L: The Old Testament Reading for Thirteenth Sunday After Pentecost is Psalm As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. 2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God? 3 My tears have been my food day and night, while people say to me all day long, "Where is your God?" 4 These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go to the house of God under the protection of the Mighty One with shouts of joy and praise among the festive throng. 5 Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God. 6 My soul is downcast within me; therefore I will remember you from the land of the Jordan, the heights of Hermon from Mount Mizar. 7 Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me. 8 By day the Lord directs his love, at night his song is with me a prayer to the God of my life. 9 I say to God my Rock, "Why have you forgotten me? Why must I go about mourning, oppressed by the enemy?" 10 My bones suffer mortal agony as my foes taunt me, saying to me all day long, "Where is your God?" 11 Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God. Psalm 42 NIV L: This is the Word of the Lord. -3-

869 7 th Avenue SE Rochester, MN C: Thanks be to God. L: The Epistle reading is from the eleventh and twelfth chapters of Hebrews. 17 By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had embraced the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son, 18 even though God had said to him, "It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned." 19 Abraham reasoned that God could even raise the dead, and so in a manner of speaking he did receive Isaac back from death. 20 By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau in regard to their future. 21 By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of Joseph's sons, and worshiped as he leaned on the top of his staff. 22 By faith Joseph, when his end was near, spoke about the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt and gave instructions concerning the burial of his bones. 23 By faith Moses' parents hid him for three months after he was born, because they saw he was no ordinary child, and they were not afraid of the king's edict. 24 By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh's daughter. 25 He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. 26 He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward. 27 By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the king's anger; he persevered because he saw him who is invisible. 28 By faith he kept the Passover and the application of blood, so that the destroyer of the firstborn would not touch the firstborn of Israel. 29 By faith the people passed through the Red Sea as on dry land; but when the Egyptians tried to do so, they were drowned. 30 By faith the walls of Jericho fell, after the army had marched around them for seven days. 31 By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient. 1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. Hebrews 11:17-31; 12:1-3 NIV L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. (Please stand to sing.) (*) RESPONSE I love you, Lord, (W&P #67) And I lift my voice to worship you; O my soul, rejoice. Take joy, my King, in what you hear; May it be a sweet, sweet sound in your ear. -4-

869 7 th Avenue SE Rochester, MN (*) HOLY GOSPEL L: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the twelfth chapter. C: Glory to You, O Lord. 49 "I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! 50 But I have a baptism to undergo, and what constraint I am under until it is completed! 51 Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division. 52 From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three. 53 They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law." Luke 12:49-53 NIV L: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ. (Please be seated.) CHILDREN'S MESSAGE (Parents, please feel free to come forward with your younger children.) HYMN As The Deer (W&P 9) As the deer panteth for the water, So my soul longeth after Thee. You alone are my heart s desire, And I long to worship Thee. Chorus: You alone are my strength, my shield; To you alone may my spirit yield. You alone are my heart s desire And I long to worship Thee. You re my friend and You are my brother Even though You are a King. I love You more than any other, So much more than anything. Stephen Ministry multiplies ministry by turning pastors into equippers, so they can enable lay people to provide caring ministry as well.
