Staff Notes On June 11-13, Scott Okuno and I had the unique experience of attending the Minnesota South District Convention. As your representatives, we gathered with over 300 pastors and laypeople to discuss the workings of our District, and to vote on matters that would impact that work. We also voted for candidates to serve in various positions in our District. I think I can speak for both of us when I say we found the Convention to be a worthwhile and edifying experience, and were overall very pleased at how the proceedings went. We opened the Convention with prayer, asking God s guidance in all our efforts that week. We received a wonderful presentation by Dr. Lane Seitz on the state of the District and his hopes for it. It was very inspirational and encouraged the sharing of our faith with others. This was highlighted again with Pastor Chris Dodge giving us a three part Bible study that discussed how Jesus is the Lord of history, that His return is imminent and in the mean time, there are many souls who need to hear about His saving work. Overall, I was impressed by the graciousness of the proceedings and humbled at the Holy Spirit s work over the course of three days. As most of you are aware, the two key issues before the voting delegates were the Board of Directors majority decision to not welcome in to LCMS fellowship the mission congregation called thealley, and to mandate the exclusive use of the Lutheran Service Book hymnal for all English speaking mission churches, with the removal of their District funding if they did not comply. These two issues were divisive because thealley, an English speaking mission for un-churched and de-churched people with a very contemporary worship style, was deemed ready for fellowship by our District President and had complied with all requirements made by District for fellowship, but the majority of the Board overruled his recommendation. The second issue mandated that English speaking mission plants exclusively use the LSB hymnal, but no LCMS churches in the Synod are mandated to use it exclusively, only encouraged to use it as one of many possible worship resources. Both resolutions were overturned at Convention, declaring the Board of Directors mandate of the LSB hymnal null and void, as well as following the District President s recommendation to welcome in to LCMS fellowship thealley. From various discussions and viewpoints, it appeared the main concern was over what made a congregation Lutheran in its worship practice. Some would argue that this means following the Divine Service word-for-word every Sunday in a printed hymnal, while others would allow for more latitude and incorporate a wider variety of worship resources, while maintaining solid Lutheran theology. I witnessed the latter when I worshipped at thealley the Sunday following the Convention. 5 Staff Notes...continued from page 3 worship style wasn t something that I d be drawn to, I could still appreciate it, because thealley is attempting to reach un-churched and de-churched souls, not necessarily lifelong Christians like me, who understand the ins and outs of Christianity. Even though their context was different from what I was used to doing in worship, I still witnessed solid Lutheran theology, communicated in a way that was unique to the un-churched and de-churched that were gathered there. The sermon was quite Biblical and divided Law and Gospel, with a special emphasis on personal outreach to others who don t know the Gospel of Christ. It was apparent they stood on Grace Alone, Faith Alone, and Scripture Alone the heart of Lutheran theology. Upcoming Events! Now, would this mission plant s worship style be wellreceived in a place like Truman, MN? Probably not. They would probably be more open to the worship context we use at Redeemer. And that s okay. And that s why we have the liturgical freedom to address the unique context that each Lutheran congregation finds itself in. Simply put, the God we worship is too big to be contained in any one worship style or hymnal. Worship style is adiaphora things neither commanded nor forbidden by God in the Bible, so liturgy serves as the framework by which we worship God, not the idol that we bow before. Using a variety of resources helps us all to better explore the panoramic view of God in all His majesty and the different ways we are called to worship Him. Whatever we are doing, be it a baroque hymn or the latest praise song, it should be done with excellence, be doctrinally sound and enriching for God's people. Jesus called us to worship Him in Spirit and Truth (John 4:23), and if we keep this proper tension observed in our worship, we will worship our Lord with excellence, standing on Grace Alone, Faith Alone, and Scripture Alone the heart of Lutheran theology. Thank you all for your prayers and support for Scott and I as we represented you at Convention. It was a blessing and I look forward with great anticipation to see the workings of this Convention bear fruit in our congregations. In Christ, Pastor Rance Page 5

30 YEARS OF QUILTING The Redeemer Quilters were organized 30 years ago, 1979, by members of Mary Circle. They began using sheets for backing, blankets for batting and whatever was donated for tops. Outgrown clothing was often cut up for blocks. It was an era when polyester knit was popular. Ruth Kennedy cut 6 x 8 inch strips of the knits that the ladies sewed together end to end. Florence Burgardt put them into jelly rolls util enough were accumulated to sew together side by side. No batting was needed for them - they made heavy serviceable quilts, but not much fun to sew together. Alice Marzolf traced 4, 6, and 8 inch squares around cardboard templates and cut them out by hand. We are so grateful for rotary cutters and mats. Surviving members of the original group include Florence Burgardt, Alice Marzolf, Henrietta Craven, Elsie Harland, and Avis Riehl. Avis still joined us until Several of us do a lot of cutting, sewing and assembly of quilts at home so we can keep up with the ladies who tie, pin and sew the bindings on. Altogether we accumulate over 5000 hours per year and made over 300 quilts in Our quilts are donated to many various organizations and individuals including our graduating seniors, infant baptized members, RCLS auction, Orphan Grain Train, Bethesda, Red Cross, Hope Lodge, IHN, Lower Room, D.C. Cancer Walk, Partners in Mission, our shut-ins and others. We are so grateful for the support of our congregation. Every piece of fabric, spool of thread, skein of yarn and monetary donation is sincerely appreciated. Special thanks to Thrivent for the grants we receive. We always welcome ladies who care to join us. Bring a sack lunch, a pair of scissors and a willing hand. Or just come and visit, check us out. It s a wonderful fellowship opportunity. We meet Mondays from 8 am to 2 pm September through May. Check the calendar for the summer months. For more information call Arlene Krueger at or EiLeen Miller at Notes of Thanks... Thank You Thanks to Ted Saxman and son for bringing the beautiful Easter Lily and their visit. To Rebecca Circle and Linda Sohre for delivering the May basket filled with goodies. The angels and light catchers are daily reminders of God s blessings. To Jan Dicke whose visits are much enjoyed. Thank you to Pastor Jim and Pastor Rance for your visits and bringing us communion. Wishing you God s blessings, - Lawrence and Eldora Krueger Page 6 Thank You To the pastors and members of Redeemer for your numerous visits, cards, phone calls, and well-wishes. Thank you also to the many wonderful volunteers who bring my son, Curt Cady, to church every weekend. The Lord is truly at work through you! Blessings! - Elsie Harland Thank You Thank you to Pastor Jim and Pastor Rance and the people of Redeemer for their prayers, cards, and calls when I was sick. God bless you! - Lloyd Vehrenkamp

CREATION CORNER Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. ATTENTION GOLFERS! 4TH ANNUAL RCLS GOLF OUTING - AUGUST 28 Attention Golfers! On August 28, the 4th Annual RCLS Golf Outing, sponsored by Thrivent, will be held at Willow Creek Golf Course. Registrations and hole sponsorships are now being accepted. The price for one golfer is $100, if registered before August 7. After August 7, the price will be $125. Brochures are also available at RCLS and at the association churches. I recently ran across something very interesting about this verse in a bible study called "The Battle for the Beginnings"... Looking at the account of Genesis 1:1 for just a brief moment, the words in that first verse are quite remarkable. They are indicative of the incredible mind of God. God says in that first verse everything that could have been said about creation and He says it in such few terms. The statement is precise and concise almost beyond human composition. A well-known scientist named Herbert Spencer died in He discovered that all reality, all reality, all that exists in the universe can be contained in five categories...time, force, action, space and matter. Herbert Spencer said everything that exists, exists in one of those categories...time, force, action, space and matter. Now think about that. Time, force, action, space and matter. That is a logical sequence. And then with that in your mind, listen to Genesis 1:1. "In the beginning," that's time..."god," that's force, "created," that's action, "the heavens," that's space, "and the earth," that's matter. Everything that could be said about everything that exists is said in that first verse. WOW...what a mighty God we serve!!! 9 Church Council Highlights - June 9, 2009 Old Business: Scott Okuno gave an update on the BHAG Committee. They now have an official title Mission 2012: Lift up, Live out, and Share. They are looking at different ways in which to gather information from the congregation as to their present activity in the mission of the church, and ways to get the inactive members energized to involve themselves in congregational and home activities. The congregation has been divided into 16 sections, with 16 Elders responsible for a section. However, there will be additional laymen assigned to each section to facilitate the involvement of the now inactive members. He asked all Committee/Board Chairmen to be thinking about how they and their Committee/Board might be involved in this process. He urged everyone to keep active in this respect over the summer, as we need to keep the momentum going. Officer, Board and Cabinet Reports President s Report: Bill Cochran Bill thanked everyone for their help and assistance during the past year of his Presidency. He indicated it had been a good group to work with. Board of Family Life Mary Hepinstall The Laughing Your Way to a Better Marriage seminar was a well-attended, successful event. They are planning games and activities for the VBS picnic and outdoor service in July. Fund Development Judy Berschet There is about $97,700 presently in our Endowment Fund, and we have not lost any money during the recent recession, which indicates a solid place we have these funds saved. Health Cabinet Roger Toomey At the last cholesterol screening, 32 people were tested, with 8 people having results over 200. There are still some openings for the AED/CPR training to take place on June 13, from 8:00 A.M. until noon. Seven people have already signed up to participate. RLCW Sandy Weiden Sandy has finished all of the blankets that are to be donated to the VBS at Concordia in the Twin Cities, scheduled for later this summer. Treasurer s Report Tom Burton Tom went over the Treasurer s Report and reported that our financial situation is still slowly improving. At the end of June, we showed a balance of $1,000 in the black. However, summer is coming, so those figures might change with people on vacations, etc. Board of Education George Poch George announced that Shelly Sturdevant would be taking over the crafts for VBS to replace Lorraine Fahrman who has been in charge of crafts for many years. The Sunday School will probably need some extra teachers for next Fall, and Rally Day is scheduled for September 13. Plans are still in the making to restructure the Education Committee to take a team approach, and two additional members have been added to this Committee. Board of Elders Randy Hellickson This Board is also in reorganization mode to better cover the needs of the congregation. Teams will be set up to take care of various areas of responsibilities, i.e., worship committee, inactive team, etc. Board of Stewardship Kristie Klatt A total of $ was collected in coins to be taken to the District Convention. Board of Trustees Dick Valde Dick announced an auxiliary member Bernie Nesler and thanked him for his help and expertise during the year. They also have had the air conditioners checked before the summer season sets in, and found that one compressor will need replacing. We are hoping it is still under warranty. Chris has gathered some figures on a replacement copier, and Tom Burton is going to do a cost comparison between leasing and owning. The Trustees have also gotten one estimate on sealing and restriping the parking lot in the amount of $6,500. They will get two or three more estimates before a decision is made. Youth Ministry Lynora Miller Lynora reported there are still two openings for the Bethesda trip. A trip to Valley Fair is scheduled for June 22, and 31 tickets have been purchased, so there are plenty still available. July will be a busy month with VBS and Bethesda scheduled. The Board of Youth is having Page 9

a pot luck in July and inviting the new members of the Board. August 9 is the Bethesda Service, and the youth will also be working at the Waffle Breakfast scheduled for that day. A camping trip is set for August 13-15, and a trip to a Twins baseball game is tentatively set for August 26. Staff Reports DCE Report Michael Harvey Michael will be leaving this coming Sunday with 14 youth and 3 adults for a Servant Event from June in Chicago. He requested prayers for all of the participants. Those participating in this trip will be commissioned at the early service on Sunday, and will depart right after the late service. Pastor s Report Pastor Rance This Thursday he and Scott Okuno will be heading out to the District Convention in St. Paul for the 3- day cnvention. He has been working with the Stephen Ministers to train them for hospital visitation, so they might help out during the absence of Pastor Jim during his sabbatical. He has also completed a schedule for some retired pastors to take over some of the services and hospital visits during Pastor Jim s sabbatical. Pastor s Report Pastor Jim May church attendance has been good. He continues to prepare for his trip to Africa; he had six shots today. He is also getting a head start on the upcoming Confirmation Class so there won t be so much to catch up on when he returns from his sabbatical, and funds have also come through from Wheat Ridge. The Memorial that we submitted for consideration at the District Convention has shown up as a suggested Resolution on the Convention Agenda, pretty much intact as we submitted it. Two new Christ Care Equippers, Paul and Bonnie Haugen, will be commissioned this weekend. Pastor Jim then thanked those Council members who will not be returning next year for their work: Bill Cochran, Elaine Gittus, Randy Hellickson, and Dick Valde. 12 BLESSED TO BE A BLESSING God has richly blessed the work of LWML. Millions of dollars have been raised for missions. Bible study and service to the Lord have strengthened each woman s relationship to Christ. We have been blessed to be a blessing. Look at this chapter from our history of service for Our Lord Jesus. There s no question the church is behind you because in so many ways you are ahead of the church. With those words, a Lutheran historian applauded the progress of the Lutheran Women s Missionary League (LWML) since its founding in Beginning in the 1850 s, women of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS) started local auxiliaries to meet the needs of people. Members of local congregations began to coordinate their efforts by uniting in state and regional leagues. LWML s founding convention was held July 7 and 8, 1942, when the 28 delegates adopted a constitution, approved a name, and chose two mission projects. The purpose of the LWML, delegates agreed, was to develop a greater mission consciousness among women and to gather funds for mission projects for which no adequate provision was made in the LCMS budget. The blessing of the LWML, now also known as Lutheran Women in Mission, goes far beyond the millions raised for missions. Its benefits can be seen in faith deepened through Bible studies, in confidence built through leadership training, in the befriending of career missionaries, in blankets and clothing gathered for the impoverished, in food shared with the hungry and, above all, in the friendships nurtured and the lives changed by sharing the love of Jesus Christ. (Taken from History of the LWML by Marlys Taege Moberg.) To read more about the history of the LWML, go to the LWML website, click on About Us, then Our History. For Mission Grant History, point to Missions on left of page and click on Mission Grants. Scroll down to the bottom of the page, look for the flashing red New and click on Mission Grants Resume. May the Lord continue to bless the LWML as we Serve the Lord with Gladness. Page 12

Rochester Central Lutheran School July 2009 Preparing for tomorrow with a Christ-centered education today! RCLS is a ministry of Family of Christ, Grace, Holy Cross and Trinity Lutheran churches. MR. PAHLKOTTER S THOUGHTS HERO (Help Everyone Reach Out) as based upon Hebrews 13:7 was the ministry theme of Rochester Central Lutheran School this year. Remember your leaders, who spoke the Word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. Hebrews 13:7 I want to thank the pastors of each of our association congregations Pastor Otte (Trinity), Pastor Heidorn (Grace), Pastor Schauder (Holy Cross) and Pastor Biar (Family of Christ) as well as our sister congregations Pastor Lehman (Mt. Moriah), Pastor Settle (Redeemer), Pastor Heining (Redeemer), Pastor Fritsch (St. John), Pastor Schilbe (Christ), DCE Harvey (Redeemer), and Music Director Beckman (Redeemer) for truly being faith heroes to our students this school year. The pastors of our association congregations helped us begin and end our school year in worship. All of the pastors led several Chapel experiences in which we learned more about being heroes for Christ and how Christ is truly our faith hero. The association pastors and Vicar Fritz participated in the All School RCLS Christmas Celebration that was held in December at John Marshall High School. They worked as part of the ministry team at RCLS providing leadership in worship, Bible study, devotions and spiritual counseling. Mrs. Beckman assisted with our Preschool music at the Redeemer campus. I also know they provide encouragement and support to the entire RCLS ministry team and our faith family. Indeed, our pastors are very important in our mission to prepare for tomorrow with a Christ-centered education today. As principal of RCLS, I want to personally thank each of these church professionals for their partnership in the Gospel. We could not do everything we do at RCLS without our church shepherds and partners in ministry. I also want to thank each of the association congregations for their continued support of our ministry. We simply could never do what we do without your support through prayer, Christian service and the sharing of God s resources. Thank you for helping us reach out to the Rochester community with the message of salvation through a quality Christian education at RCLS. Indeed, God is doing great things in Rochester. Finally, I thank God for the strong witness the association and sister congregations give when we work together for the sake of building up the kingdom of God. Indeed, you are HEROES of faith in Christ. Have a blessed summer! In the name of the ultimate HERO, Jesus Christ, Henry G. 18 MINISTRY THEME FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR STONES! The RCLS ministry theme for the school year has been chosen. It is STONES as based upon 1 Peter 2:4-5: As you come to him, the living Stone rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. We will BE A STONE for Christ and learn what this means. We will explore the strength of our stone, Jesus Christ, and how He shares His strength with us. Plan to join us for Chapel during the school year as we explore what it means to be a stone for Jesus. FINAL REGISTRATION DAYS: RCLS families will receive information in a summer mailing to assist you in preparing for our Final Registration days in August. The two dates scheduled are Thursday, August 20 and Tuesday, August 25 from 3:00 until 6:00 pm. Please mark these dates in your calendars. 21 Redeemer Lutheran Church 869 7th Avenue SE Rochester, Minnesota Return service requested Non-Profit Organization U.S. POSTAGE PAID Rochester, Minnesota Permit No. 376 Free Gifts to Give a Nursing Home Resident: Stop by and visit me. Take me out for a drive or for a walk outside. Read my favorite Bible passages to me. Tell me yours. Bring babies and children for frequent visits. Play a game with me or help me put together a puzzle. Reminisce with me. I love to look through photo albums and old scrapbooks. Bring me a special treat I can share with you. Help me write letters. Sit and comfort me when I am sick. I sat many hours comforting others. Fix up my hair for me in between beauty shop visits. I Am a Newcomer, Will You Please... Smile at me as I walk in the door. You are my first impression of the church. Help me find my place in the service. I will not find your help an intrusion. Speak to me following worship, especially as you wait in line to greet the pastor. I know that you want to see your friends, but put yourself in my place. Tell me good things about your church and pastor. Notice me -- even if I am not a family. I don t want to feel invisible just because I am unmarried, a single parent, a teenager, or an older person. Talk to me again the second week when I come back. Invite me to become a part of something. Don t assume that someone else is the church is going to do this. They are probably making the same assumption. Page
