1 The King s Messenger King of Glory Evangelical Lutheran Church ELCA 6012 River Road Flushing, Michigan Rev. Joyce Johnston, Pastor January, 2017 Proclaiming Christ through Thought, Word, and Deed! From the Desk of Pastor Joyce Prayer and Praying He was praying in a certain place, and after he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples. 2 He said to them, When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread. 4 And forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone indebted to us. And do not bring us to the time of trial. [Luke 11:1-4} Prayer was an important part of Jesus s life. There are many times when Jesus went off by himself to pray. The disciples wanted Jesus to teach them how to pray and that is the context in which the passage above from Luke is found. Jesus told his disciples to pray. St. Paul wrote this in his first letter to the Thessalonians: 16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Paul also asked for their prayrs for him, much as we do today in prayer chains. Martin Luther had a few things to say about prayer. In his words: I have so much to do that I shall spend the first three hours in prayer. The fewer the words, the better the prayer. No one can believe how powerful prayer is and what it can affect, except those who have learned it by experience. Whenever I have prayed earnestly, I have been heard and have obtained more than I prayed for. God sometimes delays, but He always comes. The New Year is about to begin. It is a time when many people make resolutions. Let us make an intentional effort to focus on prayer with the assurance that God always hears us and answers our prayers. Your servant in Christ, Pastor Joyce

4 Page 4 The King s Messenger January, 2017 Dear King of Glory family, The community service committee would like to thank everyone who donated to the November hunger project and/or to the Old Newsboys. Because of your generosity, we were able to sponsor THREE seniors this year. Plus there was enough left for donations to both the North End Soup Kitchen and Carriage Town Ministries. I m sure you all saw the table of toys for the Old Newsboys. Along with several donations, plus the loose change offering, we able to donate over $80.00 to their organization as well. You never cease to amaze us with your consistent generosity - not just at Christmas, but throughout the ENTIRE year. May God Bless you all. Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me. (Matthew 25:40) - Your Community Service Committee I am so grateful for the generous financial gift you gave me on Christmas Eve. I consider it a true blessing and a gift from God that I have the privilege of serving you as pastor. What wonderful Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services! It was good to see many of you there on Sunday as we looked at the history of many of the Christmas carols. And that was a gift also. I pray that you all have a blessed New Year as we continue to serve our Lord together. Blessings and God s peace be with you all, Pastor Joyce Reminder: Ushers are locking the entrance doors when our worship service gets underway. As a friendly reminder, while our preworship fellowship in the narthex is a blessing, ushers will tap the reminder bell when it s time for worship to begin. Flushing Christian Outreach Center For the Flushing Christian Outreach Center, we will collecting shampoo and conditioner in January.
