3 Staff Notes Since I was recently nominated to be a part of the Pastoral Leadership Institute (or, PLI ), I have been working through the assignments to prepare me for our first meeting in April. One of the assignments has been a book called The Present Future. It s been an eye-opening read. The author, Reggie McNeal asks some very tough questions: Wrong Question: How do we grow this church? (i.e. How do we get people to come to us? ) Tough Question: How do we transform our community? (i.e. How do we go out to others with the Gospel? ) These two questions speak to the main difference between church growth and kingdom growth. McNeal writes, Kingdom theology will force us to reexamine our strategy for penetrating the culture with the presence of the church. Everyone has seen the movie, Field of Dreams, and is well aware of the line, Build it and they will come. This has been a motto in many churches as it relates to their facilities and programming. But to these churches shock, their growth is short-lived. The times are certainly changing and the rise of the mega-church with mega facilities and programming is on the decline. In fact, the recent research shows that when you build a bigger facility with bigger programs and a laser-light show, you don t build the Kingdom with un-churched people, but end up filling the pews with already-churched Christians who are looking for the latest form of entertainment instead of an engagement in Christ s mission. And here s the most shocking observation of all from McNeal s book: The unchurched could care less about what churched Christians do in their buildings on Sunday, or what programs we offer, because in their eyes, these things are for church people, and not for them. What then, can we do to reach out to those unchurched people in our communities? Our challenge isn t to ignore present ministries or get rid of them. The challenge is to have these programs and ministries lead us out - into the community and into the world in the name of Jesus. Our goal is to bring and share the Presence of Christ in the lives of others through acts of compassion and service. We let our works shine like a beacon of light in the life of others outside the church building and pray that this work might lead them to see the ever-present love of our Savior. I m greatly looking forward to the upcoming PLI Convention and can t wait to share what I have learned with our church family, as we boldly take His message out to a hurting world! - Pastor Rance Settle Church Office Hours: M-F 7:30 am-4:00 pm Phone: Fax: redeemer@charterinternet.com Website: Blessed to Able to Serve Pastor, James W. 10 Health Notes SPRING is in the AIR...and in YOUR NOSE! SAVE THE DATE! The Redeemer Health Cabinet will be offering a CPR class on Saturday, May 1, from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm in Room 102. The class will be taught by Jeff and Jill Ryan Schultz, paramedics from Mayo. The sign-up sheet will be out in the narthex after Easter. Is it true that all we need to do to perform CPR is chest compressions? Attend the class and find out! Does the word springtime conjure up thoughts for you of runny noses, watery eyes and nasally voices instead of sunshine, flowers and fluttering butterflies? It doesn t have to be that way. Wipe that nose and take a look at some self-care tips from the Mayo Clinic that may help you avoid the agony of seasonal allergies. TIPS FOR ALLERGEN AVOIDANCE Air Care When pollen counts are high, keep windows and doors closed. (You can find pollen counts for your area at Using air conditioning in your home and car will clean, cool and dry the air. Reduce indoor humidity with a dehumidifier. Let s Stay In Stay indoors if possible in the early morning when pollen counts are high and on dry and windy days. Rain can help clear the air of pollen, so it s best to venture out after a good rain. Lawn mowing, weed pulling and other gardening tasks kick up pollen and molds. If you must do these tasks yourself, try wearing a dust mask. Take It Up or Clean It Up Removing carpeting can help especially if dust mites bother your allergies. If you don t want to get rid of your carpet, vacuum it weekly with a vacuum cleaner that has a small-particle or a HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filter. Go to the Mattresses with Allergens! Cover mattresses, box springs and pillows with allergy-proof covers. Wash blankets and sheets in hot water (at least 130 degrees F). At night, use a HEPA filter in your bedroom and keep windows closed. Pollen is Sticky Stuff Avoid hanging laundry outside which can collect pollen. Avoid letting pets that spend time outdoors lay on couches and beds in case pollen has clung to their fur. Galatians 6:2 WHO BENEFITS FROM STEPHEN MINISTRY - PART II FOR YOUTH: A sign-up sheet is located on the Youth Bulletin board on the main floor, or sign-up by calling Curt Walter at Some of the things you may find at softball: Team Spirit Christian Fellowship (Bring a friend!) Spending time outside (no computer games) Having fun with other kids (no reading or writing) Learn how to chew sunflower seeds Laugh at your coaches Join us Wednesday night all summer long! FOR ADULTS: Please sign-up for our new Redeemer Co-ed Softball team! 14-weeks of softball this summer. Games run from early May through early August. This team will be both fun and competitive. We will need 12 players signed-up by April 2 to be able to reserve a spot on this year s schedule. Cost will be around $30 per player. Please call or Curt Walter at or clwre@myclearwave.net to sign up. The Congregation Members Even if you never become a Stephen Minister or a care receiver, you also benefit for a couple of reasons. Probably every one of us has known someone who has faced a difficult crisis perhaps a neighbor, a coworker, a friend, or a relative. We may have wanted to help somehow but didn t know how beyond saying, I m praying for you, or sending them a card. Sometimes we might even have avoided that person because we weren t sure what to say or how to help. Stephen Ministry now gives you a place where you can connect those people to receive Jesus love and care when they need it most. You can pull that person aside and lovingly say, I know you ve been going through a rough time lately. Let me tell you about a ministry at our church that provides one -to-one Christian care to people going through tough times. You can then put them in touch with a pastor or Stephen Leader who can take the next step and, if appropriate, match them with a Stephen Minister. No longer do you have to stand by and watch someone suffer alone because you do not know what to do or say. You can also benefit from what you might call the safety net analogy. Suppose you were a tight-rope walker crossing the high wire 100 feet about the ground. Would you feel more secure or less if you had a safety net beneath you? Being in a Stephen Ministry congregation is like having a great safety net beneath you. Even if you never use it, it is comforting for you to know that the safety net is there to catch you in the event that you should lose your balance and to know it is also there to catch your loved ones as well. The Church Last of all, the church benefits. By church, I mean more than just our congregation. The church as a whole benefits because more people experience Christ s love in a significant way, are called to Christ, and grow in faith. They become better disciples and thus are better able to reach out with Jesus love to still others who may be outside the church. Page 13

They looked at Jesus life and ministry as a sneak preview of heaven and the kingdom of God. They also previewed Holy Week as we prepare for Easter. It was based on Luke 4:14-21, 31-37, They were asked, what has been the best sample of God they ve ever received? PIZZA RANCH STEWARTVILLE On Tuesday, April 27, Redeemer Youth will be helping out at the Pizza Ranch in Stewartville. We will be getting some of the profits and the tips for doing this. This is a great fund raiser, but we need youth to sign up to help. We would like you to sign up and come in shifts. Transportation will be provided, if necessary. There is a sign up sheet on our bulletin board. Please indicate what times you can work and if you need transportation. Spread the word to all your friends. family, teachers, etc.. Redeemer congregation - we really appreciate all the support you have given us so far in your prayers and monetary support.. THANKS - Dear Youth Group, Julie, & Helpers, We want to thank you again for making the cute snowmen for the shut-ins. One shut-in said, I think this is the cutest thing these kids have made for us. One of the ladies I visit was so pleased. I said, I have something for you for Valentine s Day, and she said, Oh, it must be something from the youth at church. She was in the lunchroom and made sure I took it to her room where it would be safe. What a great idea to share your love of Christ by remembering these people. Although they are unable to attend church, they feel connected when remembered this way. Thank you again for all your efforts. Project Compassion June Hovland CHURCH YOUTH SOFTBALL will be starting in May. The games are on Wednesday evenings at Slatterly Park. Volunteer training topics include hospice philosophy and goals, understanding disease conditions, communication and listening skills, bereavement care, stress management, life review and other related topics. Training is free and includes lunch and materials. For more information and registration call ext LIFE QUOTES: Next time you worship, don t be afraid to look around you. You may see Jesus in the face of a child, or the smile of a teen, or the tears of a friend. You might understand the value of life through the rhythm of a breathing tube, or the unfolding of a walker, of the chatter of a toddler. Above all, your life will be given value through the means of grace -- gifts from the God who created us, redeemed us, and continues to sanctify us. Come to the Source of Light -- then go out and let it shine! -Karen Frohwein, Lutherans For Life
