3 Church Office Hours: M-F 7:30 am-4:00 pm Phone: Fax: Website: Blessed to Serve Staff Reflections The Christmas Season is here! Maybe those are words that you are not ready to hear. Maybe those are words you wish you could have heard from everyone 3 months ago. Regardless of how you feel about it, the season of lights, parties, presents, and Christmas cookie mountain is here. This season is most certainly about more than those things though. It is easy to get wrapped up into all those things (no pun intended or did I?) and miss the important parts. It is easy to become like Martha when Jesus visits her and her sister Mary. We dwell on the traditions of Christmas being upheld in perfection. The cookies must look exactly right, the exact present must be bought to bring happiness to your nephew, the tablecloth must be spotless, the family must be around the table eating together with perfect manners the perfectly cooked meal that so many hands came together to make. If you were like me, it s easy to get lost in those details and miss the most important part of this season that is right in front of you. Christmas is our celebration of Jesus Christ coming to us as a baby. The God who created the universe by speaking, gave his son to be our Savior. We get to be witnesses of God s redeeming work come true in the baby Jesus each year as we celebrate Christmas. This is truly a remarkable event! So though it is the natural thing to be Martha and make sure everything is perfect for Christmas remember that Jesus is perfect enough for us all at Christmas. Sit at his manger this year and marvel at him as Mary did when Jesus visited their home. There are times and moments where our inner Martha will need to happen this Christmas season as we sacrifice and serve so another can have their time at the Savior s manger, but please do not miss your opportunity to do so yourself this year. God s Prince of Peace be with you all this Christmas Season! In Loving Memory... JUDY ANN MUELLER Judy Ann was born on March 15, 1944, in a farmhouse in Clearwater, Nebraska. On April 9 of that same year, she was claimed as God s daughter for eternity and given an inheritance that would neither spoil nor fade through the waters of her baptism. She met William while both were living in California and they married in Brunswick, Nebraska, on October 21, Although living in many places, LaCrescent, Minnesota, was where she called home. She still visited with good friends there until her passing. Judy also enjoyed her winters in Mission, Texas, and too kept in touch with many good friends even though she was unable to keep winter Texas-ing the last few years. She was proud of her faith and used its power to carry her through life until the end. On October 28 Judy died from complications from her Leukemia surrounded by her family and her Savior. In memory of Judy let us pray each day as she did. Read our Bibles each day as she did. And find our joy in Jesus in even the most challenging times, as she did. JOHN A. RANDALL John A. Randall was born on June 25, 1933, in Rochester to Warren and Marie. On March 25, 1955, John was given the robe of righteousness and claimed as God s son for eternity through the waters of His baptism. He graduated from Rochester High School in 1951, where he excelled in sports, especially wrestling. On November 21, 1953, he married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Germaine. The couple moved to Cape May, NJ, where John served in the US Coast Guard for two years. Following his service, he completed his education at the University of Minnesota and the School of Physical Therapy at Mayo Clinic. When he retired he was Supervisor of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Rochester Methodist Hospital. Family was an important part of John s life and he was blessed to be the father of three daughters, the grandfather of eight grandchildren, and the great grandfather of three grandchildren. On Thursday November 16, John passed away in his home, surrounded by His family, completely at peace with His Savior, and waiting to see Jesus face to face. Let us like John, live each day with a smile on our face thinking about what it will be like to see Jesus face to face.

7 Tax Planning Hints (for Seniors and possibly others) As Christians, we support our government and pay our taxes. But that does not mean we pay more than is necessary. Keep in mind these legal tax hints. 1. Required distributions from 401k, 403b, IRA, and other taxdeferred plans at age 70 1/2. If you direct some or all of this directly to your church or other qualified charity, you do not pay tax on it. 2. Grouping deductions. As the standard deduction continues to rise (and may go up substantially soon) fewer people are able to deduct their charitable donations. For those that might be slightly under the threshold, it can be advantageous to group two years into one. For instance, it is possible to give 2018 church contributions yet this year. Just mark your intent very clearly on your envelope, and the treasurer will set aside these funds in a dedicated account to be rolled over into the budget during That might allow you to take greater advantage of your deductions for and you can still take the standard deduction for Keep in mind to meet IRS requirements, the funds must be given in and you cannot ask for them back! Notes of Thanks... THANK YOU I would just like to thank all those in the Redeemer family that gave cards and memorials and words of encouragement and condolences and prayers to our family during this time of loss for our family. Words cannot express what a blessing it is to be part of such a body of believers. I thank our Lord that the sting of death is not the end and that we have victory in Jesus. "Oh death where is thy victory, oh grave where is thy sting." We can stand on the promise in Job 19: For I know that my Redeemer liveth, and that He shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God. - John Van Proosdy THANK YOU Thank you for remembering me with a beautiful rose on my 85th birthday. God bless everyone! - Marge Job THANK YOU Thank you so much for all the prayers, cards, phone calls, and support from the Redeemer Church family while Al was in the hospital, rehab and again at the hospital before he died. God bless all of you. - Elnora Hildestad THANK YOU Our heartfelt thanks to our wonderful friends at Redeemer for your prayers, phone calls, cards, thoughts and food brought in to us during our recent health concerns. We know your prayers have helped and encouraged us. EiLeen still has many hours of rehabilitation ahead of her and Dick still has more surgery and other procedures in the months ahead. 10 Health Notes Holiday Depression You may not be aware of this, but the holiday season is one of the biggest seasons for depression. Each year more that 36,000 people take their own lives. In addition 374,000 are treated in emergency departments for self - inflicted injuries. No community is immune from depression and suicide and none of us are immune to feeling blue at sometime. Expectations are that the holiday season is full of joy and love. 1. Stay realistic. Don t get hung up on what the holidays are supposed to be like or feel that you re supposed to be happy all the time. If you are comparing your holidays to some ideal holiday picture, they will always come up short. 2. Don t let small things bother you. Don t run yourself ragged just to live up to holiday tradition. So what if you don t get lights on the roof this year? So what if you don t get the perfect decorations from the crawl space? Give yourself a break. 3. Do something different. Try something different if you are too stressed by the holidays. Have Thanksgiving at a restaurant. Spend Christmas Day cross-country skiing after attending worship services. Get your family to skip gifts and instead donate the money to charity. 4. Stay connected. If you have been depressed, you need a network of close friends and family to turn to when things get tough. So during the holidays, take time to get together with your support team regularly. Keep in touch at church and let others help you. 5. Stay positive and upbeat! Easier said than done. If you try to take the holidays as they come and limit your expectations both good and bad you may enjoy them more. Remember it is just one day!!! Page Scripture and Prayer! Attend the Service of Hope and Encouragement Thursday, December 14, at 6 pm. Redeemer members will be sharing scripture and prayer for those who are struggling in the holiday season. Study the scriptures, which give you hope and encouragement.

12 ChristCare Ministry News IS GOD CALLING YOU TO BECOME PART OF THE CHRISTCARE MINISTRY HERE AT REDEEMER? To have vital and effective ChristCare Small Groups, we need people who are willing and able to serve as Leaders and Equippers. An upcoming training session is planned to start in early January. A ChristCare Group Leader is a Christian who has given prayerful consideration to serve a small group of up to 12 people. This group meets on a regular basis to grow in their relationship with Jesus and with one another, and to equip one another for their ministry in daily life. Your leadership training will equip you with numerous skills, including: Communication skills (such as listening and assertiveness) Leadership skills Spiritual growth You use these skills as a Leader, and they will also help you be more effective as a parent, spouse, manager, employee, friend, neighbor, church member, and Christian witness. Those individuals who serve in this way consistently say, "I get much more from serving as a ChristCare Group Leader than I'm ever able to give." Serving God in this way, together with a team of other committed Christians, is an experience that should not be missed. Equippers are the congregational leaders who make the ChristCare Ministry happen. They plan for the ministry, develop support for it, find and train Leaders, help ChristCare groups grow, and make the ministry work well with the congregation's other ministries. If you have these skills, please consider joining the Equippers' team: Enjoys people Is an action- and detail-oriented person Is cooperative and comfortable working as part of a team Is willing to learn and grow Has abilities in teaching, leadership, administration, planning, and supervising others. The training for both a leader and an Equipper is 16 weeks. Don't let the 16 weeks of training turn you off. The time really does fly by! The sessions are once a week for hours. There has yet to be a group that hasn't exclaimed, I can't believe we're half-way through the training already! What past Leaders and Equippers have said about the training and the ChristCare Ministry: ChristCare training was a blessing for me personally. Being hesitant to sign up, I was surprised with how interesting the leadership made the biblical focus along with the personal growth agenda. Dewey Wondrasch, New Leader I share my ChristCare Group experience with you; because although I was a skeptic, my life was changed when I came into a group where we cared for each other, searched the scriptures, praised and worshiped the Holy One, and reached out to help others outside our group. The 40 hours of training went by quickly and at the end of it, I didn t want the group to disperse. I relish the friends I made, am so thankful for the growth in my faith, and the knowledge of what a grand experience a ChristCare Group is. Liz Ketchum, current Leader (continued on the next page) Page 12

13 My passion for ChristCare is focused on the value of Christians getting together and forming friendships. What better way is there to do that than to study God s Word, pray, and share our joys and sorrows with one another. Bonnie Haugen, former Equipper I have met many people because of the two ChristCare groups I am involved with. There are many different ages, backgrounds, education, and professions that join together. We each bring something great to the meetings with different ways to see the same things. But my favorite thing about ChristCare is the love. ChristCare is not just a Bible study; it's an addition to my family. Joy Fetchenhier, Equipper You are given a solid foundation of skills, and you have this incredible support system with the Equippers. If you have questions or concerns, they are available for advice and support. Not only have I utilized leadership training material in my work for guidance when leading meetings, but also in my personal life when dealing with difficult situations. It is an amazing opportunity, and I have been blessed beyond belief by leading. I get more out of leading and growing my relationship with Jesus Christ than I could have possibly imagined! Dawn Shelstad, Leader If you are interested in taking the leadership training or visiting and joining an existing group, contact one of the Equippers: Paul Collopy, Joy Fetchenhier, Michael Harvey, Paula Muth, Sue Tollers, Baby Bottles In The Narthex The RLCW is sponsoring a Baby Bo le fund drive for New Life Family Services now and con nuing un l Sanc ty of Life Sunday on January 21, Simply take a bo le home and use it as a mite box for your spare change during this period, or include a check made out to New Life Family Services, then return them to the church office. 17 Reformation 500 Festival Hymn Sing from Circuit Visitor - Pastor Fritsch There are so many people to thank: singers, organists, instrumentalists, other directors, the good people of Trinity, pastors, etc. But I wish to single out April Beckman for special acknowledgment. Yes, she worked with dozens and dozens of other talented singers and musicians--and she could not have done it without them--but she, with her inspirational, organizational and musical talents, pulled it all together and "made it sing." Thank you, April! Page 17

19 Christmas Is Coming! That means it s time for Christmas Tree decorating at Samaritan Bethany. What a fun way to spread some Christmas cheer! All the decorations are provided, just your time is needed. All you have to do is put the decorations on the trees. This would be a great project for a confirmation class, Circle, a Christ Care group, families, a coffee group or a group of friends. There are more than 50 trees that need decorating. We don t need the trees done all at once, or by the same group. If you want to come for an hour (or more) and do a couple of trees, that would be great! Just about any time of the day or evening would work. Contact Ronnie Robertson (volunteer coordinator) and she ll get you scheduled. Her is: rrobertson@samaritanbethany. com and her phone number is You can also contact Jane Quaintance (Board Chair) at janequaintance@gmail.com or if you have questions. 20 Tanzanian Sewing Center $25,000 In a remote area of Tanzania, southeast of Lake Victoria, is an extremely arid region of 19,601 square miles. Many girls live here in small villages who do not go to school or work. They are at the mercy of their villages for assistance. Many of the girls end up ge ng married at a very young age just to have someone to take care of them. Some end up as slaves as a result of human trafficking. Many become pros tutes and end up with AIDS. These girls have no skills to rely on for their own support. Their lives are filled with despair and despera on. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania South East Lake Victoria Diocese (ELCT SELVD) is aware of their situa on and wants to help. They are dedicated to helping these girls, bringing them the Good News of Jesus and bap zing them. Once these girls know of our Savior s love and sacrifice for our sins, they can share it with their families and friends. Teaching them to sew will help sustain them physically as they make items for others that can be purchased. Teaching them about Jesus will sustain them spiritually. All this is happening at the new Missional Sewing Center. This center will be a school and a place to live, housing 50 students. All the supplies, including sewing machines, sewing supplies, furniture, and instruc on will be provided with this grant chosen at the 2017 LWML Conven on. The churches in the district are very compassionate and caring, showing their support by purchasing the items the girls make. Thanks to the church leaders, there are also markets where these goods can be sold. This center will help the ELCT SELVD fulfill their mission of connec ng with all their people, even those living in the remote bush areas, bringing them the Gospel and the hope of eternal life with Jesus. Page 20 One of their primary purposes is to serve all people spiritually, mentally, and physically through Jesus Name. A er one year, each girl will: 1) have her own pocket money; 2) be able to feed herself for one year; 3) have enough money to buy her own sewing machine; and 4) have enough money to buy her materials for projects to sell for the next year. All of this is in response to Mt. 25:36 & 40, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me And the King will answer them, Truly I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me. The leaders of the ELCT SELVD believe they can make a difference in the lives of these girls, showing them the love of Jesus; teaching them about Jesus, and showing them a future with hope and the knowledge of Jesus life, death, and resurrec on. Prayer #1 Gracious Lord, bless the leaders of this Lutheran Church in Tanzania. They are striving to teach their young girls about Jesus and helping them to a be er life with new skills. Bless all their work. Send the Holy Spirit to guide them and encourage them. Open doors for them and help make their efforts frui ul and change the lives of these girls. In Jesus Holy Name we pray. Amen Prayer #2 Dearest Heavenly Father, through scripture You have shown us the love Jesus had for children during His earthly ministry. Bless these girls in Tanzania as they learn about Jesus and a new life skill. Through the work of the Holy Spirit, may then come to know Jesus as their savior and joyfully share this Good News with their families and friends. In Jesus Holy Name we pray. Amen
