Redeemer Youth + New Orleans = National Youth Gathering This past July, Redeemer sent 23 youth and 7 adults down to New Orleans, Louisiana, for the 2016 LCMS National Youth Gathering. There we gathered with 25,000 other youth and adults to worship, learn, serve, and grow in our faith in Christ Jesus. We learned that In Christ Alone we have our Joy, our Identity, our true Humility, our real Community. Because of this, we can stand In Christ Alone. The pictures do not tell the full story of the magnitude of the gathering or the growth we experienced there. Redeemer, we can't thank you enough for the prayers, thoughts, and financial help you've given us, nor the excitement you had which fueled us in New Orleans. I'm looking forward to the 2019 Gathering in Minneapolis! Page 2

Staff Reflections September is an exciting time at Redeemer. Teams start meeting again. Programs start. Music groups start practicing again. Sunday school, Bible studies, confirmation ramp back up. There is activity, excitement, and energy everywhere. As all of these things start up, I pose a simple question - What makes Redeemer so special? I feel confident to say that the answer is not our programs or activities. The answer is not our facilities, staff, or teams. What makes Redeemer so special? We do it all as a family. We are not a club. We are not an organization. We are not simply a non-profit. We are a family. A Family of Believers. We are a generational family that gathers around the cross of our Savior. We grow together as a family. We laugh and cry together as a family. We live our lives together as a family. We share His love with the family and as a family in our community. Plus, we welcome others into our family of believers. As your pastor, I want you to know this truth - YOU are an important and cared for part of this family! Although our theme verse is found in Ephesians 3:14-21, I love these words from Paul Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice. Aim for restoration, comfort one another, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you. Greet one another with a holy kiss. (2 Corinthians 13:11-12) That sounds like someone talking to and encouraged by family. I have, we have, and you have the opportunity to talk to, grow with and be encouraged by family too! As your pastor I do not see you as simply a member of Redeemer. I see you as a FAMILY member of Redeemer. I pray that this theme will only grow us closer together as who we are, a Family of Believers. I also pray that the album title of my favorite Christian band, (Rend Collective), continues to be an important part of our Family of Believers. That title is As Family We Go. As Family, we go into our community, homes, and world! - Pastor Adam Koglin Church Office Hours: M-F 7:30 am-4:00 pm Phone: Fax: Blessed to Serve Pastor, Adam Koglin AKoglin@redeemer-rochester.com (office) (cell) Director of Parish Music, April Beckman beckmana1@hotmail.com (office) (cell) Director of Faith Development, Michael J. 5 Take Note...Upcoming Events! Sunday Adult Bible Classes JOINT BIBLE CLASS ON RALLY DAY, SEPTEMBER 11 Plan to join Pastor Koglin in the Sanctuary as we gather together to kick-off the Education year and hear more about our theme for the year, Family of Believers. These classes will begin on Sunday, September 18, at 9:20 am. THE REASON FOR GOD: Using literature, philosophy, real-life experiences, and Scripture, this class will help you explore the truth of Christianity and how to dialogue with others on the six common objections to Christianity. This class will help you grow in your confidence and ability to share that confidence with others. Pastor Koglin is excited to facilitate this discussion with you! HUH, THAT WAS EASY Sharing our faith in Jesus has long been seen as a challenging, scary, thing, best left to the professionals. The big secret is that it is not scary, it is super easy, and you are already doing it more than you know. This class will open your eyes up to the truth about sharing our faith and will help you celebrate the sharing you are already doing! CREATION TOPIC We have several interesting topics this year in our creation class. We will be looking at biomimicry, which is how science is copying creation to solve difficult problems. We will also be looking at how the ark in Kentucky was built by a team of Amish carpenters, and we will be looking at Ray Comfort's new "Atheist Delusion" which is the rebuttal to Richard Dawkins "The God Delusion"...Frank Kmett will also be sharing about his latest trip to Mammoth Museum in Hot Springs, SD...maybe even time for more topics!!! INTERESTED IN JOINING? We will be welcoming new people into this Family of Believers on Sunday, September 25. If you would like information on joining that day, please speak to Pastor Koglin by September 11. Friday, September 16 6:00 pm South Fellowship Hall It s that time! Grab your friends, your slippers, a comfy chair, and some cash for pizza and pop or bring a snack to share and join us at Movie Night! NIAGARA Heightened by the awesome might and majesty of Niagara Falls, this tense drama stars Marilyn Monroe and Joseph Cotton in a story of love and betrayal, murder and danger. The quaint motel overlooking the famed falls seems like a perfect honeymoon retreat, in fact it s where the young and beautiful Rose Loomis (Monroe) plans to kill her husband George (Cotton). Monroe s performance here paints a dark portrait of mystery and suspense. Niagara is powerful entertainment from its intriguing beginning to its shocking conclusion. There will a surprise second movie you will love also. Page 5

THOUGHTS ABOUT CHRISTMAS The Family Ministry Team is planning an Advent Fair for December 4! The Christmas season can be a very busy time of the year with our focus often going in all sorts of directions. By having the Fair at the beginning of the season we can share ideas for decorations, traditions, music, food, and other ways to help us focus on the reason for the season. We are inviting any individuals, Christ Care Groups, or any other groups who would like to participate, to join us! Do you have a favorite food that you make and are willing to demonstrate how to make it? Or how about a craft that others may enjoy learning to make? A Christ Care group might want to set up a display of nativity sets, or offer another sort of Advent activity. Individuals or groups are invited to provide/share music for awhile. Watch for a sign-up sheet in September. FAMILY GAME NIGHT Many families joined us for the last game night and requested that we offer it more often. Watch for another Game Night coming this fall. 1 ST YEAR CONFIRMATION CLASS CALLING ALL WOMEN! The Women's Tuesday Evening Bible Study will be beginning a new study in September entitled, "Trusting In Christ," from the Jesus Calling Bible Study Series. We meet on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 7:00 PM, in room L-1 off the Fellowship Hall or sometimes in the Library. Contact Julie Walter, (507) , if you are interested in joining us or just come to the September meeting. If you do not have time to prepare, that is OK. If you have time to dig in and study, that is OK too! We love to learn together, pray together and give praise to God. Consider joining us once a month! Redeemer s 1 st year confirmands will be receiving Luther s Small Catechism on Rally Sunday, September 11. The catechisms will be handed out at the service the student is attending. Before receiving the catechism, the confirmand s family will have had a chance to write words of encouragement and hope. Please lift these young men and women up in prayer as they continue their journey of faith. GARY TOLLERS Gary Tollers was born on February 10, 1955, in Park Falls, Wisconsin. In April of that same year, he was claimed as God s child and given the hope of eternal life through the Waters of Baptism. He married his high school sweetheart, Susan, in 1977, and they were blessed with a daughter Heather Joy. Gary had a servant-heart and loved to welcome people. He did that in his years at IBM, in his time at Redeemer, and immediately following retirement he joined the corps as a volunteer, a passion that he has had all his life. Gary s life ended way too soon, but he showed us all how to live and give in retirement. He passed away suddenly on August 5, in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Gary lived a life where he welcomed and encouraged the people that crossed his path. Please extend that encouragement to his family in this difficult time. Also, as a family of believers, let us extend that welcome and encouragement to each other and our community. Page 10

What is a Director of Faith Development? Some questions have surfaced about what is it exactly that Michael Harvey does now? Many people have seen me do many things with youth and education over the past 15 years and now that Josh Heirigs is focusing on those areas, what is Michael doing and what is a Director of Faith Development? First of all, Michael is still a certified Director of Christian Education (DCE). That has not changed. Josh is also a certified Director of Christian Education. As a way to differentiate our roles, Josh is now a DCE serving as a Director of Youth and Education. Michael is now a DCE who is serving as a Director of Faith Development. Within the role of Director of Youth and Education, of course, you will find Youth ministry and Education ministry. As part of the role of Director of Faith Development, you will find Family Ministry, Discipleship Ministry and Leadership Development. When we think about how faith in Christ develops, we have to first go into the home. God primarily uses family to pass down the faith. Families supported by other families form the Christian church (A family of families!). The next important influencer of faith development are other people that a person comes in contact with. Discipleship is all about knowing who you are in Christ and living that out in your daily life as you join Jesus on His mission. All of us have stories of people who inspired us in faith because they knew who they were in Christ and lived it. At Redeemer we want to form disciples in God s grace. Finally, leadership development, Christ-like Servant Leadership development is an important part of faith development. Leaders come in all different shapes, sizes and responsibility levels. We all know people that have led us well in the right direction, I also believe that God did not place into us the spirit of timidity, a part of faith development is being in a place where you lead from your faith. Below I break down and define these areas in a bit more detail. Family Ministry: Ministry to the Christian Home While I pray that this ministry area will impact Redeemer as a Family of Christ, for the sake of my job description Family Ministry should be understood more specifically as Ministry to the Christian Home. The homes of the members of Redeemer. The term Home is used in order to address the need for Christ to be proclaimed, not just in homes filled with families (often understood as households with children), but all homes connected to Redeemer. Singles, Couples, w/ Children, Empty Nesters, Widow(er)s, etc This scope is huge but vital for Kingdom growth and Discipleship. Some amount of emphasis will be placed on families with children as there is an amount of urgency to connecting with children under 12. Leadership Development: Christ-like Servant Leaders This includes supporting and encouraging present leaders, coaching new leaders, and identifying potential leaders. I would like to establish credibility to coach Ministry Teams into higher self-sufficiency. KINDLE has many helpful tools to use to accomplish this. Discipleship: Missional Discipleship Discipleship is Helping people recognize who they are in Christ Helping people discover that they have a purpose and that God is using them in His mission Helping people connect to the power of God s Word and to prayer Helping people serve the Lord in their actions Helping people to tell their story Helping disciples multiply disciples Greg Finke s work will be heavily utilized. Please keep me in your prayers as I move into this role. It will take time but I am excited for the possibilities this ministry direction will allow. Right now I am moving into this position, but also working with the Call Team, assisting Josh with his transition, and taking on additional tasks during the vacancy. This is a full season but I am moving and setting things up for the future. Please feel free to talk to me. Ask questions, seek clarification or just chat. This is a busy time but the whole staff is here first and foremost for the Redeemer family! - Michael Harvey, Director of Faith Development Page 11

Stephen Ministry KEEPING CONFIDENCES Confidentiality, as you may have read or heard before, is a cornerstone of Stephen Ministry. What a care receiver says to his or her Stephen Minister is kept in strictest confidence. Even the identity of a care receiver is kept secret (unless the care receiver chooses to tell someone). How does this relate to you, as a member of Redeemer? Even if you are not a Stephen Minister, think about the importance of confidentiality in your day-to-day relationships. Consider how you can improve relationships and help people s personal healing by maintaining confidentiality when something is said to you. When someone shares a personal feeling, a thought that is troubling them, or something for which they might feel guilty, it can be very tempting to pass that information along to someone. Even when motives are noble (for instance, wanting to pass the information along as a prayer request), it could be damaging or painful to the person who first shared the information. If you really believe it is something that needs to be passed along to a prayer chain, pastor, Stephen Leader, or someone else who could help tell that to the person who shared it. Or get permission from the individual for you to share the information yourself. Confidentiality is a standard of conduct all of us need to live by not just those involved in our Stephen Ministry program. Confidentiality promotes trust, builds one another up, and encourages healing in a Christian community. As Solomon says in Proverbs 12:16, Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. For more information regarding the Stephen Ministry program or how to have a Stephen Ministry enter a confidential relationship with you during a difficult time, please contact Pastor Adam Koglin, (507) Health Notes 2016 INFLUENZA VACCINE PROGRAM Once again the Hy-Vee Health and Wellness Team, Brian Fisk, will be offering flu shots on Sunday, September 25, from 8:30-10:30 a.m. The clinic will be held in the Parish Nurse s office (next to the business office). Blood pressures will be offered in another location. Why should I get vaccinated? Influenza is a serious disease that can lead to hospitalization and sometimes even death. An annual flu vaccine is the best way to reduce the chance that you will spread it to others. Who should get vaccinated? Everyone who is at least 6 months of age should get a flu vaccine this season. Hy-Vee is offering the vaccine to those over the age of 6 years. Which vaccine is offered? Hy-Vee is offering a quadrivalent influenza injectable vaccine, which includes 4 strains. High-dose trivalent injectable vaccine is available (and recommended) for those over the age of 65 years. Source: Centers for Disease Control and prevention, Reminders: *Please bring proof of insurance to the event. This includes both Medicare Part B and Medicare Part D as well as any commercial insurance cards. *Vaccine is FREE of charge for Medicare patients. *Without insurance, cash price is $ Page 12

Church Council Highlights - August 9, 2016 Anita gave an overview with how final expenses were handled for the Celebration Meal in June. Money to cover expenses was taken from the Thrivent Fund and the Undesignated Council Dedicated Fund. Also used were the Continuing Education Funds left by Pastor Heining upon retirement. Motion: made, seconded and carried to approve $17, being taken from above funds. Motion: made, seconded and carried that future donations will be directed back to the Undesignated Council Dedicated Fund. NEW BUSINESS: Pastor Koglin will report next month on the status of Redeemer s new normal as we proceed with one pastor during the search for an administrative/senior pastor. He read Ephesians 3:14-21 and discussed who we are as a Family of Redeemer. We are a Family of Believers and we will move forward as such. Also see attached written report. He also addressed his decision to decline a Call extended to him and remain here at Redeemer. Michael gave a comprehensive report regarding his position and responsibilities now that Josh is on board with DCE duties also. See attached report Pastor Koglin, Michael and Josh all put forth their thoughts on the upcoming First Annual Leadership Retreat to be held at Redeemer on August 30, We are all encouraged to attend, and there will also be a sign-up sheet available the next two weeks for others wishing to attend. The meeting will be approximately 1 ½ hours and will give an overview on what it means going forward as a Family of Believers. week. Dawn Radtke reported that we are currently looking for members willing to serve on the Stewardship Committee. There was then discussion on how all committees and boards should look to the MAQ results in recruiting members to serve at Redeemer. OLD BUSINESS Michael Harvey gave a comprehensive report on the status of improving technology needs throughout Redeemer. It appears reasonable that we move forward with sound improvements to the Chancel sound system and purchase new sound equipment to replace worn out microphones etc. A Motion was made, seconded and carried that Redeemer move forward with sound improvement options at a cost of $63, These monies will be taken from the Beverly Bailey bequest. The remaining bequest money will be on hold for further sound enhancements upon gathering more information for improvement in both Fellowship Halls. Mark Kuisle reported that the Call Committee has received 26 names from South District and has culled those candidates down to six possible choices. The list will eventually reduce to 2 or 3 prospective candidates who will be presented at a Voters Assembly Meeting. This will not be a speedy process as background checks are not quickly done. REPORTS: Dale Martinson gave financial reports for June and July. A Motion was made, seconded and carried to approve both reports as submitted. The minutes for June Council Meeting were viewed and a Motion was made, seconded and carried to approve minutes. Education Report by Paula Kuisle who states we are getting all in motion for upcoming Sunday School year. Josh Heirigs reported the National Youth Gathering in New Orleans went very well. He expressed his pleasure in hearing members of the youth group sharing their testimonies during church services last Page 13

REDEEMER YOUTH SOFTBALL Another fantas c year of Redeemer Youth So ball has concluded! If you forgot to sign up...there is always next year to join in! If you did not come out to watch a game, you missed out on all the good old fashioned FUN! We hope to see you next year! Approximately 25 youth signed up this year and many weeks we had nineteen players...woo hoo! Thanks to all the players who greatly improved over the season. Thanks to those who have played before for suppor ng the new players and helping out where needed. Special thanks to TJ Jahnke and Chris an Nisbit who helped coach this summer. Shantel Loos helped when she was not the official referee. We were proud of the good sportsmanship shown by all! Who knew coming in 5th place could be SO MUCH FUN! Updates from the Foundation Team The process for calling a pastor from the field to fill the administrative pastor position at Redeemer Lutheran Church has moved forward since April. The Foundation Committee was formed, subcommittees and leaders were identified. the Self Study Team completed their assigned task (with congregation participation) and forwarded their report to the district office; the Farewell Team successfully produced an event to celebrate Redeemer and the service given by Pastor James Heining; the Vacancy Team developed a schedule for the interim vacancy; the Communication Team has provided updates in the weekly bulletin and monthly Resource; the Prayer Team has concentrated on providing weekly prayers in the bulletin; the Call Committee has followed district guidelines by receiving nominations from Redeemer congregation members, forwarded those nominations to the district office, met with Circuit Visitor, Rev Lyle Fritch, who received a list of 26 candidates from district office, reviewed and narrowed that list of candidates from 26 to 11 assisted by the Circuit Visitor, further narrowed the 11 candidates to six, published the names and locations of the six semi-finalists in the bulletin. Required background checks are being completed while the Call Team is communicating with the six candidates to set up phone interviews. Redeemer members may share any concerns or objections they may have regarding any of the candidates with the Call Committee. The Call Team will narrow the list up to three candidates, each finalist may be invited for an on-site visit. The format for this visit will be shared with the congregation when developed. The Hospitality Committee will be involved in the on-site visits. A brief description of each pastor s background, family, years in ministry and strengths will be provided Redeemer church members. In a duly called Voters meeting, the Call Team submits the name(s) of the finalist(s) for call. There will be no nominations from the floor. A call will not be extended until the background checks on all finalists have been completed. The Prayer Team will continue prayer suggestions and has plans for designated time for a prayer vigil.
