1 The monthly newsletter of Redeemer Lutheran Church-Rochester, Minnesota THE WOMAN AT THE WELL May 2015 Mission Statement Making Him Known by Sharing Our Story During May we will hear of the anonymous woman Jesus encountered at the well in Samaria. While she had a somewhat checkered past, we remember her for her sincere sharing of her encounter with Jesus. How good it is when we simply share our story. Examples include: Our confirmands who will give witness to their faith on April 26. The musically gi ed, who will share through music on May 10. Our new members who will be welcomed on May 17. Our High School graduates whom we will recognize on May 31. May the Lord help all of us to simply share our faith-stories as we have opportunity. 3 Staff Reflections His Story in Your Story My Easter sermon is one of the most commented on sermons I have preached here (too bad the recording did not work). I heard words like powerful, meaningful, moving, spoke right to me, and much thanks. I have also met with a few people that said it has changed how they think about a current situation. This caused me to stop and reflect on the Why question. Why did this sermon do what it did? I want to answer that question for you to see how your everyday conversations can do the same. First, it is not me! Praise the Lord. It was Him! Ask my wife and Chris in the office, I was spinning my wheels all week and very anxious. Then I remembered, He was not asking me to make a perfect sermon, He was simply asking me to let Him speak through me. Jesus is not asking you to have the perfect Gospel presentation. Jesus is not asking you to change peoples hearts. Jesus is not asking you to convert people. Jesus is not asking you to know it all. He is just asking you to join Him and let Him speak through you. Jesus is asking you to say, You got this Jesus, speak like it is true and enjoy the ride. Second, I remembered this line from a book I just read, Jesus wasn t counting on me being perfect. He was counting on me being me. And, in His grace, using me in His redemptive mission (Joining Jesus on His Mission Greg Finke). Jesus just wanted me to be me, His child. Jesus does not call the equipped He equips the called! I simply shared my story of health trials the last year, and the hope that He is not Here, He is Risen already spoke directly to me. I simply shared His story of working in my life. I shared my life with you. I was just real, normal, and me. That is the same for you. Jesus is speaking and working in your story. As you share your story of His work in your life, He will speak to others as they live their lives. Just be real, be normal and be you. Sharing Jesus with others is not as daunting as it sounds. Simply put, it is living life with others (which you are already doing). Living life with Jesus and letting Him live through you. Finally, sharing your story (which you know very well) to highlight His story. His story that shapes, molds, provides hope, comfort, presence, rest, peace, forgiveness, and salvation into your story. Join us this month as we speak about using our everyday lives and stories to share His story. And then go into your neighborhoods, homes, workplaces, and lives and feel the joy of being this person How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, Your God Reigns! Captain Horatio Hornblower 1950 Gregory Peck plays the valiant Napoleonic-era naval hero in this swashbuckling saga true to the famed source novels. Hornblower outthinks his rivals to outfight them. He is unflinching under fire, modest in victory and more than a little at sea romantically with Lady Barbara Wellesley (Virginia Mayo). Page 5

7 From the Hauans I m dreaming of a white Easter! Yes, that s right: we had another inch of snowfall on Easter morning. As usual, we have all stayed quite busy since our March update. Eric helped with various Lenten services and also preached during the Maundy Thursday service. We were so blessed to have his mom, Gloria, and big sister, Erin, as well as her family of six stay with us over Easter. In March, Eric a ended our church s confirma on retreat along with 50 confirmands. He learned a lot and also had a lot of fun with the kids. This upcoming weekend he will be with approximately 60 men for St. John s annual Men s Retreat which will also be held at Camp Pioneer. He is really looking forward to this me of fellowship with these men. This upcoming year brings about many changes for our family: saying goodbye and moving away from good friends here in New York, re connec ng with old friends in St. Louis, Julia will start kindergarten, Cal will start preschool, and we will move once again for our Call placement. Prayers for smooth transi ons for our family, but especially for our children, are most welcomed in advance. Sincerely, Eric, Jill, Julia, Cal, and Hazel Hauan Eric: hauane@csl.edu Jill: ricjillhauan@hotmail.com Their full newsle er with pictures is available on the website and bulle n board in the Narthex. Congratulations Confirmands On April 26, during a special afternoon service, the following youth were confirmed in their faith. Please continue to keep them in your prayers. The call committee held their initial meeting last week, they formed a job description and started the process of collecting names to be considered for this position. At this time we have received names of new graduates, we have also received a number of nominations from within the congregation, and we are looking forward to receiving a list of names of DCEs serving in the field from the district. At the beginning of May the call committee will meet to go through the names and information and start narrowing down the candidates. Once the list of candidates has been narrowed down, interviews will be conducted. When the interview phase is complete a voters meeting will be called and Redeemer will vote to extend a call. Throughout this process the call committee will continue to share information. Please keep the call committee and the congregation in your prayers as we move forward together to seek the Lord s will. The call committee members are: Bryce Beckman, Dave and Terri Galanits, Rich Gommels, Sam Hildestad, Devin Janssen, Jay Kurtz, Paul and Lori Lewis, Dauline Menze, Lynora Miller, Bernie Nesler, Morgan Nitz, Joel Pralle, Mark Radtke, and Terri Zemke. Virginia Miller is serving as chair of this call committee. Page 7

The hearts of our Lutheran Women in Mission have been moved to help meet this biennium s mission goal. Thanks to the many, many people who shared their blessings with the LWML. Most of all, let s all join in thanking our Lord who has blessed each one of us beyond our imagina on. Because of His blessings to us, we are blessed to share with others. And we pray this is not done just because we have a goal to meet but because we care about and love our neighbors as ourselves. Many people are in need, both spiritually and physically; we are here to answer God s command to reach out and help our neighbor and share Jesus love in any way we are able. Did you know that the Parish Nurse Office has some of the most common items of medical equipment available for loan? Among the items available are: walkers (with and without seats), shower chairs, commodes, a limited number of wheel chairs, bathtub hand rails, canes. These are used items that are available for your use for as long as you need them; contact the Parish Nurse Office for any of these, or other medical equipment. If we have it, you can use it! Items can be returned to the Parish Nurse Office when you no longer need them so that others may use them. If you have medical equipment at home that you no longer need, contact the Parish Nurse Office to see if it is an item that can be added to Redeemer s inventory. Please call first, as space is limited. Several other reminders Redeemer has several hearing enhancement devices available to lend for worship to help you better participate in and hear the worship service. The units are available at the Welcome Center. Ask whoever is serving at the Welcome Center to help provide you with a device. Please return the unit after the service so someone else may find enhanced enjoyment in the next worship service. File of Life packets are available for you to pick up and take home. The packets are a resource for your emergency contact numbers that you can complete and have quickly available in your home. The packets are available in the narthex, help yourself; or ask one of Redeemer s Parish Nurses. Is someone in your family shut-in and unable to attend church? The church services are made available on audio CD, with the CDs being available for pick up after the late Sunday service. They can be picked up from the shelf to right-hand side of the elevator just before the hallway going to the Church Office. If you have a computer, the audio portion of the service is also available through Redeemer s website; once on the website, scroll down, and on the left-hand side look for Recent Services/Sermons Audio and make your selection to listen to just the audio portion of the sermon, or the entire worship service.
