869 7 th Avenue SE Rochester, MN Redeemer Lutheran Church The Fourth Sunday After Epiphany Bring i Home Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you. Luke 8:39 Saturday, February 1, :30 pm Sunday, February 2, :00 and 10:40 am Our Mission Statement: As Christians based on the solid foundation of God s Word, empowered by the Holy Spirit we strive to live out, lift up, and share our faith in Jesus Christ welcoming all into our family of believers. Goal: We will challenge each individual and each group in the congregation to grow in living out, lifting up, and sharing their faith in Jesus Christ. WELCOME VISITORS We have printed out our worship service to make it easier for all of us to follow. Hymns are found in the hymn section of the Lutheran Service Book or in Worship & Praise, the purple supplement. Please visit our Welcome Center in the narthex for additional information about Redeemer. OUR THEME FOR TODAY is True Wisdom. Many in the world like to think they have all the answers. We try to fit God s teaching into our world now. Our epistle lesson today reminds that God s foolishness is wiser than all the wisdom of mankind. TODAY S WORSHIP (*) Those who are able are asked to stand during these parts of the service. GREETINGS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS (We welcome our fellow worshipers.) HYMN Blessed Jesus, At Your Word... LSB 904 (*) CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION (Please stand.) P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. P: Our help is in the name of the Lord, C: who made heaven and earth. -1-
869 7 th Avenue SE Rochester, MN P: Since we are gathered to hear God s Word, call upon Him in prayer and praise, and receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition. Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner. C: Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen. P: Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. (*) HYMN OF PRAISE (W&P 13) Our God is an awesome God, He reigns from heaven above With wisdom, pow r and love Our God is an awesome God! Our God is an awesome God! Our God is an awesome God! (*) SALUTATION AND COLLECT OF THE DAY P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Let us pray. Almighty God, you know that we live in a world which would claim to have all the answers which would seek to leave you out. Help us to look to you for true wisdom and peace; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. (Please be seated.) ANTHEM (8:00 am) Blest Are They Youth Chimes Blest are they, the poor in spirit; theirs is the kingdom of God. Blest are they, full of sorrow; they shall be consoled. Refrain: Rejoice and be glad! Blessed are you, holy are you. Rejoice and be glad! Yours is the kingdom of God! Blest are they who seek peace; they are the children of God. Blest are they who suffer in faith; the glory of God is theirs. (10:40 am) El-Shaddai Alleluia Singers -2-
869 7 th Avenue SE Rochester, MN SCRIPTURE READINGS L: The Old Testament reading for the Fourth Sunday After Epiphany is from the sixth chapter Micah. 1 Listen to what the Lord says: "Stand up, plead my case before the mountains; let the hills hear what you have to say. 2 "Hear, you mountains, the Lord 's accusation; listen, you everlasting foundations of the earth. For the Lord has a case against his people; he is lodging a charge against Israel. 3 "My people, what have I done to you? How have I burdened you? Answer me. 4 I brought you up out of Egypt and redeemed you from the land of slavery. I sent Moses to lead you, also Aaron and Miriam. 5 My people, remember what Balak king of Moab plotted and what Balaam son of Beor answered. Remember your journey from Shittim to Gilgal, that you may know the righteous acts of the Lord." 6 With what shall I come before the Lord and bow down before the exalted God? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? 7 Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousand rivers of olive oil? Shall I offer my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? 8 He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:1 8 L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. L: The Epistle reading is from 1 Corinthians chapter one. 18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written: "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate." 20 Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21 For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. 22 Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, 24 but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength. 26 Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. 27 But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28 God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things and the things that are not to nullify the things that are, 29 so that no one may boast before him. 30 It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. 31 Therefore, as it is written: "Let the one who -3-
869 7 th Avenue SE Rochester, MN boasts boast in the Lord." 1 Corinthians 1:18 31 L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. (Please stand to sing.) (*) ALLELUIA AND VERSE (*) HOLY GOSPEL L: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the tenth chapter. C: Glory to You, O Lord. 1 Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2 and he began to teach them. He said: 3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. 7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 "Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. Matthew 5:

Above all, we give thanks for Your boundless love shown to us when You sent Your only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ, into our flesh and laid on Him our sin, giving Him into death that we might not die eternally. Because He is now risen from the dead and lives and reigns to all eternity, all who believe in Him will overcome sin and death and will rise again to new life. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. (*) THE WORDS OF OUR LORD P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me. In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me. (*)PAX DOMINI P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: Amen. (*) ANGUS DEI -7-

SPIRITUAL ADOPTION This weekend and next weekend, Redeemer members will have the opportunity to spiritually adopt a child who will be newly conceived during the month of February. Not all conceived babies are allowed to be born. In fact, more than 3200 babies lose their lives to abortion each and every day. It is for this reason that you are being asked to adopt and pray for an unborn child. You may adopt a child individually or as a family by signing up at the table in the narthex. You will be asked to choose a boy or a girl and give this baby a name. Then you will pray for this unborn child and for all unborn children during the next nine months. Remember, the power of prayer is great! For the next nine months the bulletin and newsletter will be giving you updates describing your baby s development. This fall, at the time of your baby s birth, we will celebrate a special time rejoicing as a congregation, perhaps with gifts of newborn items for a local pregnancy center. There are millions of unborn children desperately in need of your prayers. Our local Lutherans for Life Chapter hopes that you will consider spiritually adopting one of these children and sharing the love for life that God has given you. Stephen Ministry ALL ALONE? Don t be. God doesn t want us to be all alone. He wants us to turn to others when things are bothering us. Stephen Ministers will walk with you through your troubles and be there for you when you need them. 14 HEART DISEASE MONTH This week we take a look at three conditions of heart disease: Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) refers to conditions and diseases of the heart and blood vessels, and includes coronary artery disease, angina, heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure and congestive heart failure (CHF). Since 1900, diseases of the heart have been the leading cause of death in the United States every year except 1918, the year of the influenza epidemic. Heart Attack, or Myocardial Infarction (MI), occurs when the blood supply to the heart is reduced or stopped. This usually happens when the blood vessels around the heart become blocked due to a buildup of plaque on the walls of the vessel or when plaque breaks loose and travels through the blood until it becomes lodged in the vessel causing occlusion. Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) is a condition where the heart is not able to pump enough blood to meet the body s needs. Heart damage due to a heart attack, coronary artery disease, heart valve disease or cardiomyopathy can result in CHF. Because the heart cannot work as efficiently as it should, people with CHF may become severely limited in their daily activities. Did you know that there are modifiable risk factors for heart disease? Risk factors that you can help change are: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity/ overweight, physical inactivity, cigarette smoking, diabetes, nutrition choices. If you are still looking for a New Year s Resolution take a second look at the list of risk factors. Could you benefit from making one of these your New Year s Resolution? Do you know someone that does not have a church home, is an inactive member, questioning their faith, or maybe just hurting. Instead of inviting them to church start with an invitation to tea time! Get some coffee, hot chocolate, or even a beer and listen to them. Ask questions, get to know their story, show you care! Build a relationship, know that Christ goes with you, and see where He leads! 18 Bring i Home Jesus sent him away, saying, Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you. And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him. Luke 8:38b-39 Forgiveness In The Home BIBLE VERSE OF THE WEEK: (for memorization or reflection) For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 1 Corinthians 1:18 POINTS TO PONDER THIS WEEK: What things are considered to be very important in our culture today? In your life? How can we support and encourage on another, as we seek to focus on that true wisdom which comes from God? What would our homes look like if we shared more grace and forgiveness? Hymn of the Month: Beautiful Savior LSB 537 Beautiful Savior, King of creation, Son of God and Son of Man! Truly I d love Thee, Truly I d serve Thee, Light of my soul, my joy, my crown. A favorite hymn of many! But why? because of the tune or the text, or the marriage of text and tune. This hymn has undergone many changes throughout the years. The first text found in 1662 in Münster had six stanzas. Its modern form together with the melody was noted down from oral recitation in the province of Glaz, Silesia and was published in a song book in Leipzig in The popularity of the tune in America began in 1850 with the hymn titled Fairest Lord Jesus mostly found in non- Lutheran hymnals. The text and tune are beautifully married together to proclaim the greatness of our God in His creation. Take i Home Parents, home devotions are so very important! Having prayer and faith discussions in the home is a huge boost to helping you children own their faith. It is easiest to start devotions with young children but it is never too late to start! If you feel like you don t know where to start or how to do them ask Michael Harvey or one of the Pastors. They would love to help you find a starting point. Bringing i Home is vital to build a Christian foundation for your child but you may also find that an additional benefit is kids with a moral compass, honor, respect and a heart for service. We all want the best for our kids and grandkids; there is NOTHING better than Jesus Christ!
