9 Eye Health Tips August has been identified as Cataract Awareness Month. Redeemer s Health Cabinet will use the opportunity to focus on eye health in general during the month of August. Your eyes are an important part of your health. You can do many things to keep them healthy and make sure you are seeing your best. Here are some simple tips for maintaining healthy eyes: Have a comprehensive dilated eye exam A dilated eye exam is the only way to detect diseases, such as glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, age-related macular degeneration. It also helps determine if your vision could be improved by wearing glasses or contact lenses. Know your family s eye history Talk with family members about their eye health. It is important to know if anyone has been diagnosed with an eye disease or condition, since many are hereditary. Eat right to protect your sight Eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables (particularly dark leafy greens, such as spinach, kale, or collard greens) is important for eye health. Research also shows benefits to eye health from eating fish high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, tuna, and halibut. Maintain a healthy weight Being overweight or obese increases your risk of developing diabetes and other systemic conditions. Wear protective eyewear Wear protective eyewear, such as safety glasses, goggles, safety shields, eye guards when playing sports or doing activities around the home. Quit smoking or never start Smoking is as bad for your eyes as for the rest of your body. Research has linked smoking to an increased risk of developing age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, and optic nerve damage. Be cool & wear your shades Sunglasses protect your eyes from the sun s ultraviolet rays. Purchase sunglasses that block out 99% - 100% of both UV-A and UV-B radiation. Give your eyes a rest Use the rule when at the computer or focusing on any one thing for a longer time period. Every 20 minutes, look about 20 feet in front of you for 20 seconds. Luke 8:38b-39 BIBLE VERSE OF THE WEEK: (for memorization or reflection) When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick. Matthew 14:14 POINTS TO PONDER THIS WEEK: Reflect upon the times that Jesus went out of his way to help those in need. Consider ways in which the Lord might be calling you to help someone in need. Hymn of the Month: Lord, Take My Hand and Lead me LSB 722 Lord, take my hand and lead me upon life s way; Direct, protect, and feed me from day to day. Without Your grace and favor I go astray; So take my hand, o Savior, and lead the way. This is a hymn that helps articulate the trust we can have in our Savior amongst a life that is often uncertain. With all things that we try to control, the only things that really matter are the grace and forgiveness we receive through our Savior. As we encounter people in our lives, can we also display the comfort we have in knowing that even when times are tough, we can trust in a God who loved us so much He sacrificed His Son for us? The writer of this text had many health issues, yet through her challenges wrote a beautiful hymn of faith that testifies to her trust in her Savior to lead the way. Take it Home God is so good. If we take a few minutes to look around we will see so many ways in which God is blessing us! A journal is a great way to keep track of all the times you see God working in your life in a given day. If you really want to be amazed, keep track of your bad days. Write down the details of those days that it seems God is not with you and your life is falling apart. Put it somewhere and then make a note to look at those notes after a month, and a year. When you revisit those notes, most of the time you will be amazed at how God used that disaster in an awesome way. If you don t see God s action, give it more time. Remember if you are unwilling to forgive or holding onto a grudge you will in most cases miss the blessing.
