2 St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 2 From the Pastor Welcome, Beth. We welcome our sister Beth Ann Heuerman who entered into full communion with the Catholic Church with her Profession of Faith last Sunday. Beth, we re glad to have you as part of our SFA family! Bread for the World. Bread for the World is an agency that works to combat world hunger. Each fall, they ask parishes throughout the country to take up a special collection. Thank you for participating in last week s collection. Mass of Remembrance. Our annual Mass of Remembrance is slated for today, November 4, at 6:00 p.m. At 2:00 p.m., there will be a memorial service at the cemetery. Year of Faith. The new Year of Faith officially began on Thursday, October 11. This Year marks the 50 th anniversary of the start of Vatican II and the 20 th anniversary of the publication of the new Catholic Catechism. The theme of the year is New Evangelization. Each one of us is called to deepen our commitment to the Faith and to call others to join us. We are urged, also, to review the documents of Vatican II and to spend time studying the Catechism. One of the early slogans of the Church was faith seeking understanding. During the coming months, we pray for the grace of a deeper faith and we study to more fully understand the Catholic Faith. Forming Consciences. Every four years prior to the presidential elections, the US Catholic bishops publish an updated version of their document Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship. That document is available on the USCCB website. Alternatively, I have prepared a summary of that document and placed it in church. By the time you read this, the summary should also be available on our parish website. Please read what the bishops have to say before you cast your vote on Tuesday. OFM Meetings. The meetings I attended in Chicago and St. Louis all went well. I saw some faces that would be familiar to most of the parish members, Fr. Jim Lause and Fr. Bob Sieg among them. Many of the friars asked about T-Town and Montrose because almost all of the older friars did much of their formation in this area. ACSA. The updated ACSA report came in at the end of the week. To date, 15% of our parish households have pledged a total of $27,500. We ve just started, and already we re more than 40% of the way toward our goal of $63K! Please make your pledge as soon as you can. Mass Stipends. There has been a surge in Mass stipends coming into the parish office. In some cases, people are requesting a specific date for a Mass. We will try to accommodate your wishes as best we can; however, we will not be able to meet every request. There will be cases when several people may ask for the same Mass on the same day. In such cases, we will not be able to accommodate everyone. We trust in your understanding. We will try to publish the Mass intentions in the bulletin, but they will not be announced at Mass. When the saints go marching in, I want to be in that number What a wonderful thought as we celebrate the feast of All Saints. During the year we celebrate the feast days of Saints - those canonized by the Church, that is, those declared by the Church to be in heaven. Our confident faith tells us that there are countless others in heaven - saints spelled with a small s. All of us can think of family members and other loved ones whom we believe to be in that number. We read in the Book of Revelation 5:3 where the author is directed to write: The victor will be dressed in white, and I will never erase his name from the book of life but will acknowledge his name in the presence of my Father and his angels. The book of life in the Scriptures is considered to be the scroll on which the names of the redeemed are kept. St. Francis Parish began the practice years ago of having a book of life placed by the Blessed Virgin Mary s side altar in church for parishioners to write the names of loved ones who have been called from this life. Writing the name of your departed loved one(s) in the book of life is an expression of faith that you believe your loved one is among the number of saints marching into heaven. Prayer Service A prayer service for Jack Hardiek will be held on Wednesday nights at 8:00 pm in the chapel beginning this week, November 7th. Why You Should Vote It s the right thing to do. A basic moral test for our society is how we treat the most vulnerable in our midst (Faithful Citizenship). Voting is the way citizens move the government to accomplish this. The U.S. bishops confirm this when they teach, In the Catholic tradition, responsible citizenship is a virtue, and participation in political life is a moral obligation..... It is necessary that all participate.in promoting the common good (Faithful Citizenship). After all, freedom isn t free.

4 St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 4 Overcoming Fear Praised be the Lord, I exclaim, And I am safe from my enemies. Psalm 18:4 As a young child I was so shy that I would pray that the teacher wouldn t call on me even when I knew the answer. Over time, my anxiety grew, and I began to avoid any situation that might require me to do any type of public speaking. Fear was definitely my enemy, one which seemed destined to defeat me. Then one day I began to pray to be liberated from this crippling fear. The answer to my prayer came quickly when I was asked and agreed to do a reading at Mass. My initial leap of faith led to many more small steps over the years until this particular fear has disappeared. While we might have people in our lives that we consider adversaries, our greatest enemies are often those that reside in our hearts and minds. How and when healing takes place remains a mystery, but the first step is to ask. 5 November 4, st Sunday in Ordinary Time page 5 40 DAYS FOR LIFE -- We pray because we believe unborn babies are created in the image of God. We fast because we believe the Lord has called us to pray and fast. Although at times, it looks like Satan is winning. We, the people of Jesus Christ, know that he is a defeated foe. This November 4 th is our last day of the fall prayer and fasting campaign. Let us take time to consider his call to us to love and protect the most vulnerable and defenseless. Who is a God like You, pardoning iniquity and passing over the transgressions of the remnant of His heritage? (Micah 7:18-19) Micah had been sent to declare God s judgment and call the people of Judah to repentance. The people had become spiritually and ethically corrupt. Let us cry out in repentance for His mercy once again. Prayer: Heavenly Father, eternal, changeless, and faithful Lord, we recognize that we are in need of forgiveness as a nation, for turning our hearts away from you. Hear our prayer of repentance Lord and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. We praise you for your tender mercies and your compassion that never fails. Lord, it is only by Your grace that we can live lives that are just, and merciful. May Your Holy Spirit enable us to walk humbly in Your presence and may You be pleased to restore America so that a generation not yet born may praise you. In the name of Christ Jesus, who has done great things for us. Amen. As you know, on Christmas Eve there is a 5:30 pm Mass at which there are 4 servers (from Gr. 5-12) and a 10:30 pm Mass at which there are 12 torch bearers (from Gr. 4,5,6,7,8) and 5 servers (from Gr. 8-12). On Christmas Day there is a 7:00 am Mass at which we need 4 servers (from Gr. 4-12) and an 8:45 am Mass at which we also need 4 servers (from Gr. 4-12). If you and your family are planning to attend any of these Masses, and your child is interested in serving the Mass or being a torch bearer, please notify me. I am well aware that some families celebrate their family Christmas on Christmas Eve and some on Christmas Day. To help me avoid a lot of scheduling hassles, I would appreciate knowing if your child could and would possibly be able to serve any of these Masses. I ask that you please contact me at by Wednesday, November 21, if your child is willing and able to serve any of these times. This way I can have these assignments listed in the December schedule. I am also trying to schedule servers for the Masses on the holy day, January 1 (Mary Mother of God). Mass times are on Monday, December 31 (New Year s Eve) at 4:00 pm and 5:30 pm and on Tuesday, January 1 at 8:45 am and 10:30 am. If your child is willing to serve any of these Masses, please let me know by November 21. Thank you for any help that you can give me! Barb Runde What a Day! Last Sunday was quite a day for me. With a grateful heart, I offered the 10:30 Mass of Thanksgiving to God for 50 years of priesthood. This Mass of Thanksgiving was in the same Church where I was ordained 50 years ago. I hope and pray more young men will hear and accept the invitation of our Lord, Come, follow me. After Mass a large number of parishioners came to the Grade School Auditorium for the reception. No speeches so you could enjoy yourself! I was surprised and amazed by the creative table decorations made from recycling materials. I thought, How appropriate for the CEO of the Prestigious Teutopolis Environmental Engineering Firm, Unincorporated. Let me say a big THANKS to all who had a hand in the celebration the participants in the Liturgy and those in attendance, the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, those who arranged the reception, the set-up and clean-up crews, those arranging and serving the food and drinks, the creative artists of the table decoration, those showing the DVD of my family pictures and the many folks who came to the reception. Thanks to all who remembered me with congratulations, best wishes and gifts on the day itself and on other days. It s a great life! Lord, keep it coming! Fr. Vernon Olmer, O.F.M.

For additional details contact Connie Deters at Holy Humor...Charlie Jones was a pious man who had been head usher at his church for 75 years. On his 105th birthday, he stopped going to church. Alarmed by his absence after so many years of faithful service, the pastor went to see him. He found Charlie in excellent health, so the minister asked, How come after all these years we don t see you any more? The old man looked around and lowered his voice, I ll tell you, Pastor, he whispered, when I got to be ninety, I expected God to take me home any day. But then when I got to be ninety-five, then one hundred, then 105. So I figured that God is very busy and must ve forgotten about me and I don t want to remind Him.
